While working overnights at Ralphs all across LA, one store would turn off the crappy Ralph's music and blare this station. It's a great station for the oldies and classics. We turned it off when they opened the doors at 6am, so I can't say if it had a horrible morning show, plus I would go to the office to start counting checks. It made the horrible nights go by fast. I have listened to this station for a week at work. I HATE IT! They play the same eagles song, the same michael jackson songs, the same hall and oats song,the same Queen songs, the same fleetwood mac songs, the same everything, over and over and over. I've heard tainted love about 8 times this week, I love the song but it's too much when it comes on repetitively. There's a classic rock station in L.A. and it's 100.3 the sound. KRTH-FM and it's "Boss Radio" format that originated on it and it's sister station, the legendary 93/KHJ-AM, back in 1965 under the brilliant program director Bill Drake, is no more. Back in '65 KRTH-FM was KHJ-FM and the stations simulcast programming. KHJ-FM became KRTH-FM in 1972 when it became an "Oldies" formatted station, a new concept at the time. The new KRTH 80's format is pure radio banality, a short playlist of 80's hits presented with little personality. Gone are the big name DJs who after years of loyal service and big ratings were fired without notice. Gone are the incredible Johnny Mann jingles. Gone is the sound that kept the station near the top of the ratings in LA since 1972. The question is... Why do you blow up a hugely popular and successful format and the number THREE station in Los Angeles and fire the people who worked so hard to make it so successful? As always, it's about the money. The AM/FM radio business model is failing. The nearly 100 year old broadcast technology has little appeal to most people under 50. Research indicates that most Millennials can't name the call letters of a single radio station, they listen to music on the Internet. And with the coming Digital Dash listeners will be able to access tens of thousands of commercial free Internet audio channels, or stream services like Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, and many, many others. With so many better choices, it's just a matter of time before AM/FM and it's endless commercials goes the way of the once ubiquitous steam locomotive. Broadcasting is being replaced by microcasting where services like Pandora and Spotify, the two largest services, can customize a station to each individual listener's taste and offer commercial free content for $10 per month. A small price to pay for relieving one's self from the 24 minutes of commercials per hour now commonly found on most AM/FM music stations. Ads by the way that no longer generate a response for advertisers, and as a result have fallen in value. Revenues at KRTH are down more than 40% since 2008, despite it being the number three most listened to station in Los Angeles. As a result, the station decided to cut costs, hire no-name inexpensive DJs, automate the overnight time slot, and abandon a format that catered to Baby Boomers for one that attracts Generation X. The results? Surprisingly, KRTH remains the number three station in the July 2016 ratings here in Los Angeles. The gamble has paid off for CBS Radio, the company that owns KRTH. What to do if you liked the old KRTH-FM? Do what I have been doing since 2012, subscribe to Serius/XM. For $5 per month you will have access to more than 100 commercial free channels including 60's on Six(channel 6), a sixties channel that plays a much greater variety of 60's music than KRTH ever did, the KRTH playlist was only 270 songs. On weekends, 60's on Six features Cousin Brucie, the famous New York DJ, followed by a great show DJed by Peter Noon of Herman's Hermits. Both shows are seriously addictive. The "sound" of the channel is pure 60's featuring 1960s Pams jingles. Pams is the company that for decades has created the best jingles ever recorded. The only exception, in my opinion, being the Johnny Mann jingles featured on Drake-Chenault stations and heard on KHJ and KRTH for so many years. 60's on Six alone is worth the $5 per month, but also included are the Howard Stern channels, CNN and FOX news live, numerous talk stations, sports stations, and dozens of great commercial free music stations programmed by curators that love the music they are sharing with you. A few of my favorites are the Sinatra channel, the Broadway Musical channel, and the 40's channel. When calling to subscribe to Serius/XM you will be offered a $16 per month package, just say no and ask for the special promotion to try out the service. Tell them your friend is only paying $5 per month and that's the package you want. The package only last five months, so every five months you must call and ask for customer retention and tell them that unless they continue the deal that you wish to quit the service, they will renew the five buck deal. As a radio professional for many years, I once stated that it would be a cold day in hell before I would pay for radio, but that was long ago when AM/FM radio was still great, long before the corporate takeover of radio by Wall Street, and long before the demise of the Top 40 format and every song being auto-tuned (made to sound like a robot is singing). I gladly pay the $5, it's a bargain. Farewell to KRTH and its "Boss Radio" format. It's incredible 50 year run is an amazing tribute to the greatest radio programmer of all time, Bill Drake, a radio legend who unfortunately passed in 2008. read more

Hear is the entirety of thier playlist: 1. Private Eyes - Hall and Oats. 2. I love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett 3. Tainted Love - Soft Cell 4. Time after Time - Cindy Lauper. 5. Gypsie - Fleetwood mac. EVERYDAY ALL DAY. I'm convinced no one listens to this. Sad because it was a unique spot on the dial. Please go back to your roots. I'll forgive you. Hell, I'll help you with your playlist! If your determined to go with the 70's/80's stuff please mix it up for your sake and the sanity of your listeners. There is 20+ years of songs to choose from! This station is frustrating. They have what must be the greatest library of songs in LA, but they play the same damn songs over and over again. If I hear "Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch" one more time, I think I'll barf! Too much Motown and not enough rock. Recently, they's started to play songs from the late 1970s and early 1980s, which is either good or bad depending on your view. As for myself, I long for the older days when they focused more on the Elvis era! This is my fourth or fifth choice of FM radio stations in LA. read more

I have a MAJOR complaint about this radio station. I USED to love this station and this is what i mostly used to listen because i love oldies. For everything else there are or were other stations, but for oldies this WAS the one, but not anymore. It is terrible and sad how this station has transformed into something else from what it used to be. The other day a weird song by Phil Collins (Genesis) was playing on air. Phil Collins??? Then it was the pretenders, then the song "low rider", then the Eagles, Tina Turner, I was like: "what?? A'm I on the right station??" I mean, they were all nice songs, but that's why there is 103.5 and 97.1 and other stations where they play this same songs. All i can say is that the re-structure of this station sucks and whoever approved this change should be fired. Whenever they feel like it, they throw in an Oldie here and there, and the songs are not that really good either. I wish they would play more classic oldies songs such as the Shirelles, ruby and the romantics "our day will come" or the Classic IV, The Buckinghams and many many many other awesome groups and songs. The music industry is sure dying little by little and this is indeed very upsetting! Update as of 12-28-2017 Well, my original post was done a long time ago and all I want to say now is that this station really did it. They no longer play oldies, AT ALL. We still listen to the station in the car and what they mostly play now is 80's music. That's cool, we LOVE 80's, but that's not the point. This station actually killed playing oldies. That's very disappointing indeed and I'm not happy about that at all. My kids will grow up not knowing what oldies are. That ain't cool. Going back to the 80's subject, this station plays the same band and songs too darn repetitive, and it gets boring. Is funny because my family and I play "which band is going to play next", and we usually guess who it is. The songs/bands have become very predictable and honesty, very annoying. What da heck is happening at KEARTH 101 and what's the deal with you guys? There are so many great and unique songs and endless bands from the 80's alone, so why keep playing the same darn songs? I question the advertising on this station. I was listening to it last night ( a Sunday evening) about 6:45pm. Putting dinner on the table and an add comes on about increasing your sexual pleasure....my 11 yr old daughter yelled out of her bedroom, "MOM, WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?!" Whomever in marketing and promotions approved this advertisement for this time of day obviously does not have children and furthermore does not care that some listeners are introducing the next generation to some oldies but goodies. Loved the oldies since I was a kid. Im in my 40s now and surprisingly I listen to kearth infrequently in comparison to 10 or even 20 years ago. I love the 70s and 60s music. The newer stuff doesn't seem to belong on this station. I look at the playlist and it seems kearth is having an identity crisis. Sadly, the old kearth generation is dying off and the station needs to reinvent itself. The problem is the brand identity was so strong with real oldies that us "old guys" are missing the true oldies and I wonder if kearth is at all relevant to the younger age group. read more

I am giving this radio station a pretty high rating of 4, but with some reservations. For one thing, I can't stand it when they play music by the Rolling Stones. I wish they would play more soft rock, and less of the hard rock stuff. I think what bothers me most of all, though, is when the disc jockeys talk during the instrumental introductions of songs. Do these DJ's require so much constant attention, that they do not have the class to stop talking the moment a song begins? Imagine, for example, how crucial to the whole song, that the purely instrumental introductions are to such classic songs as Hotel California, or Stairway to Heaven, and you should get an idea of what I am talking about. read more

Like most radio, songs are replayed daily, if not a few times a day. It's like that across most all radio stations. Why? The average listener isn't even listening for an hour a day, so to many, they won't hear the same songs several times a day. I remember when KRTH was 50's oldies, now it's newer stuff. For those that complain '80's isn't oldies, notice KRTH doesn't advertise as oldies anymore. And believe it or not, their ratings were slumping. Now, ratings are up, shows that '50's aren't getting the ratings. Radio is a business, and if the business model is dying, you adapt. Adapt or die. KRTH adapted, albeit by turning off some listeners, but are now bringing in new ones. With that said, if you want variety in any musical genre, forget radio. You won't find it. Satellite and services like Pandora, Spotify, etc are your choices. read more

In LA there is not one radio station that now plays 50's and 60's music. You'd think that with HD radio at least one station would split say three channels into three different time era's for pop music. KEarth-101 used to have a sub channel for pre-Beatles, but they played the same old 30-odd songs over and over. If there are no DJ's and interesting comments about certain tracks, I might just as well listen to my own playlists from my smartphone. read more

Less than average station! When compared to the KRTH of the mid 80's, when they went as far as having a Firecracker 300 countdown or a #1 Music Weekend over Labor Day and an endless selection of classic oldies...etc..they have gone mostly downhill, yes since 1987. KRTH used to have a large playlist, but now (thanks in part to music testing among listeners in auditoriums), the playlist has decreased to hearing the same 400 or so 70's and early 80's songs weekly over and over again (songs that supposedly test well among select participating listeners surveying music in the L.A. area). I mean, how many times must we hear Brown Eyed Girl, Go Your Own Way or Low Rider??? Seriously??? I am glad KRTH has stuck with some 60's music, but it is not enough. The word is that KRTH only plays slightly less than 10% of all the songs that charted top 20 from 1964 to 1985, meaning several thousand songs are being ignored. Only the "safe and tested" songs are being played with weekly repetition. No thanks! My MP3 player is 101 times better!! read more

I grew up on this station.. Namely becuase my bus driver in 1st grade would only play K-Earth.. I clearly remember getting driven around when I was 5-6 and loving Motown and Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, the 50s classics, early rock and roll, doo wop etc. It's a fond memory and I carried my love for K-Earth and old music with me to my moms car when I was 16 and to my own when I was 20. I always new they leaned on a the conservative side of oldies and that they were music reconstructionists. Namely becuase most of my favorite acts of the 60s seemed ignored. Namely Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Bob Dylan, pretty much any bands psychedelic period (the stones, Beatles etc), blues, neil young, leonard cohen, spirit, heart, grateful dead, janis joplen, link ray, Jefferson airplane, crosby, stills, and Nash (and young), they always avoided certain musicians 100% Namely Jimi and Bob amongst others.. In 20 years of listening I've never heard one tune from either.. How can you claim to play music of the 50s-70s and ignore the best guitarist and best songwriter of at least their generation.. If not ever. Around me turning 20 in 2010 is when it started going down hill.. Now they don't even play their WATERED DOWN version of oldies.. They play mostly late 70s early 80s to almost 1990s now. I'm sorry but the phrase oldies isn't like classic cars.. Decades of music after the 1970s are hardly oldies.. And it's betrayal to the phrase to consider them so. I love 80s music.. I didn't at first because I was more of an oldies world sound classic rock punk rock blues folk kinda guy. I really think that reorienting your program has deterred most of your original listeners away from your station.. To other sources of media.. iphones, Pandora etc. I can just imagine K-Earth when I'm 40 in 15 years playing the back St boys and Britney Spears as oldies. Wake up.. Your station sucks.. Plus add some variety for Christ sake.. You really think so lowly of your consumers.. What are we dodos? You've lost your older listeners and your younger audience.. I really miss the oldies that they used to play on this station. I can see how they would need to update some for the new generation, but The new generation can appreciate the classic oldies mixed in with the new k-earth playlist of mostly 80s and some 70s. I really loved to hear mo-town on k-earth, and classics like Ray charles and Richie valens, Roy Orbison and the supremes. It used to be the only la station of its kind, now it's sounding like everything else and I fear our future generation won't even know what Motown was. I wish they would play a nice balance of oldies and their new playlist to make it easier for us oldies fans to still want to listen. K-earth used to be my favorite but now it's just another one in the crowd. I requested "hit the road jack" a few weeks ago and fhe dj said she'd see if she could find it! Obviously, she didn't. I wonder what the old djs think of this change? How many people are as upset as me? I agree with the comments from previous reviewers about the overnight decline of KRTH. However, until this past Monday there was the KRTH 101-2 HD station that played nothing but oldies from the 50's and 60's. That was a terrific station and my wife and I listened to it daily. Monday when we went to listen to it we found out is was now a Disney station. What this tells me is that KRTH has cast away it's listeners of the last 40+ years and left them no choice but to seek other stations. Shame on the new management and CBS radio for the shabby treatment! read more

I grew up listening to oldies but goodies, I fell in love in my Senior year listening to some of these songs, then it was KRLA & now K-Earth 101.1 FM. I love the station, I play it from the moment my Mother & I wake up till we go to bed practically. My Mother is paralized and can't speak anymore so I play it for her to hear the wonderful songs she loved, she takes deep sighs & I know she is enjoying it. Probably reminds her of her life, the happy times. I cannot afford to go to concerts or any of the fun places but with K-earth my Sister & I have been to so many concerts, even took my Mother once in her wheelchair! I love the songs, the D-J's, when you talk to them they make you feel like they care. I think it is the best radio station of all. Thank you. Lea of Reseda. read more
