Buyer Beware: Dishonest, Unprofessional, and Unreliable We had a very troubling experience with John Kulk of Kulk's Plumbing and his employees. After diagnosing an issue as a contractor error, John Kulk later changed his story to the contractor, claiming it was our fault, which caused significant confusion and delays. John Kulk then suggested we file a claim with our homeowners insurance to correct the negligence of the contractor. The next day, the contractor stated in writing that he had "conferred" with John Kulk and repeated the same question, "perhaps that could go through your homeowners' insurance??" During the service, the atmosphere was uncomfortable. John Kulk said he can't find qualified workers and complained his employees frequently argue in front of customers. We previously had to ban John Kulk's employees from our home due to their unprofessional behavior. We also faced major reliability issues; snow removal was promised but denied immediately when the first snow storm arrived. Given the overpricing and lack of professional conduct, the quality of service here has significantly declined. We do not feel comfortable having John Kulk's Plumbing in our home again. I've been a Kulk's customer for 3+ years and am very satisfied with the service I've received. Kulk's does the annual service on my oil burner and have fixed several plumbing problems I've had. This was my first experience with Kulk's. I had used another plumber last year and had a positive experience, however, they seemed to be overpriced and other reviews agreed. I called yesterday and the receptionist was helpful and attentive. She got all of my information and was quick to get me into the schedule. I said it wasn't a rush but she said "you need to have hot water!" Richard arrived in the designated time slot, convenient to my work schedule. He was funny, courteous and informative on the problem. One of my elements was cracked and the other was caked in minerals. He even gave me suggestions to prevent future issues. The price was fair and Richard was thorough on completing the work, even though the office was pressing for him to finish up since it was the end of the work day on Friday. I will use them again and recommend them to my friends in the area. UPDATE! After the work done last week, I had a slow drip from the boiler drain. I called on Monday and the receptionist was quick to schedule a time for Richard to stop by. He capped the drain with a brass plug and charged me nothing. I called your company last week to set up a visit to get an estimate for a water softener installation. I was recommended to you by the manufacturer (Springwell Water) as a licensed installer. My appointment was today between 8a-10a. Between 9:30a & 10:30a I called Kulks 3x. Each time I got an answering service that could not tell me anything and was told I would get a call from the office to tell me when the Tech would arrive. At almost 11a I received a voice message telling me that my appointment was canceled. It says you do not install Springwell equipment. I scheduled the service because Springwell told me you were verified on their equipment. I told the scheduler this when I set up the service call. Kulks dropped the ball 3x. 1. If you're not certified with Springwell, why did you schedule the service? 2. Why did I not receive a phone call? I waited hours for the tech to show up. 3. Why don't you answer your phone? Why am I calling a 3rd party answering service and waiting hours for a response? KULKS is not interested in the customer, they are interested in making their lives easier by outsourcing customer service. read more

They installed a hot water storage tank for $1500.00 after the install the tank was leaking from the relief valve they did come back to the house to look at the pressure relief valve and said yes it is leaking due to my water pressure coming in from the street so the pressure reducer valve coming from the main has to be switched out that price was $475 I'm thinking when you get a professional they check all these things out before they installation for the Hot water storage tank another plumber here to install the pressure relief valve have perfect pressure coming into the house now and tank is still leaking from the pressure relief valve call them back and they said it would be need an expansion tank on the hot water storage tank another $475 I think that this is ridiculous this is For $1500 for a hot water storage tank should be installed step-by-step checking the water pressure to begin with after so this way there's no surprises that's why they're called professionals and I'm not but I'm learning so far a hot water tanks has cost me close to $2000 now they want an additional $475 for the expansion tank for the hot water storage tank I think this is getting a pretty hefty price tag for storage tank installed by professionals I was hoping for a professional company to stand by their product and their Craft and do the right thing for your customer the hot water is that tank might be defective But they refuse to exchange . But bY me adding on expensive parts that could have been avoided with the install ... Being a new homeowner in a brand new area, it was hard to find a reliable plumber. I had Daka Plumbing and Heating come by and they lost their notes. Jim Beyer refused to even give me an estimate. What a night and day experience with Kulk's! John was over within a few hours of getting the call and gave sound professional advice. The prices are fair because the quality of work is really high, I honestly think it's a great value. Other people complaining on here don't understand the true cost of plumbing work. Kulk's are professionals and deserve the rates they charge. Since that first visit where they replaced about 14 aging angle stops, they've unclogged a sink (required two visits - the second they didn't charge me for because they want to do the job right), installed shower heads, new toilets, a new sink, and even a brand new well pump. Throughout they've given me sound advice and OPTIONS, which are always nice to have. I can't recommend Kulk's enough! Do not use this company. Had an appointment today which I took off of work for. Let the office know in advance that the roof was 20-25 feet high and confirmed they go this high to clear vent stacks. Actually double confirmed as 7 previous places I called do not go this high. Owner/receptionist confirmed again that they do this. Elvis shows up (no ladder) and states that they never go higher than 1 level. 2 min appt there and he left. Called the office and talked to the owner/receptionist. She stated that she's "just a girl" and doesn't know about these things. Then mentioned that I never said it was that high. Again, I mentioned it was mentioned twice. She then says some employees may go that high, but depends on comfort level. Well if you are the owner maybe send an employee that is willing to do the job that was explained over the phone? Basically, a waste of time and I'm out of luck now trying to find someone else after waiting a week for this appointment. Owner came to fix 2 clogged toilets and charged 216.00. It took 15 minutes It was a discount from $240. He was arrogant and argumentative, giving information about California property taxes saying they were the same as New York. No, they are almost 2x higher ( I just moved here from CA.) He wanted to charge $500.00 to buy and install a toilet. I called his distributor and they said the price of the toilet is $ 217.00 for anyone. That would be an installation charge of $ 283.00- a total rip offf for 30 minutes work. He gave me a card which was a large refrigerator magnet with cooking conversions and substitutions. My pipes were gurgling and threatened backing up. I called Kulks although I had never dealt with them before. They returned my call and came within an hour of that call. One always worries about the honesty of such kinds of businesses because you are pretty much at their mercy. Rich was competent and attentive. Was very pleased with my experience with Kulk's. I called them when I had a problem with water not draining properly from my downstairs fixtures. They predicted it was a problem with the waste line connecting my house to the city sewer line. We scheduled a time for them to come over, and they arrived exactly on time. They were correct in their theory, as it ended up I had tree roots growing into the line, causing blockages. They cleared it after great effort (was likely decades of growth), and with a remote camera showed me what the problem had been, and how it was now clear. Their price for the work was reasonable, and they cleaned up nicely after their work. Would highly recommend them. read more

I came home to a gushing water water heater, and they're the first ones I called. The response time was good. The quote for the heater & installation- shockingly high. Luckily I had a friend help me to shut everything off before he came. I was able to get two other quotes that night, which were reasonable. I called Kulk's about two leaks I had at the house and they sent out their plumber the next day - so response time was excellent and receptionist was super friendly. He was able to figure out where one of the leaks was coming from and put some silicone on it. Then I asked him to replace a fill valve and flapper on the toilet. That was it. He was here for less than half an hour. My bill? $302. I don't think it's reasonable at all and they never told me any of their pricing upfront. read more

I needed a plumber, fast, to fix a leaking toilet. I also had another toilet that needed a replacement part and a furnace that needed to be serviced. After reading the positive reviews on Yelp, I called Kulk's P&H around 8:30 a.m., spoke briefly to John about what I needed and he had his repairman, Craig, at my house in less than hour--outstanding! Craig did an excellent job; he was very friendly, efficient and knowledgeable, and explained what needed to be done and why and kept me apprised every step of the way. By lunchtime, the work was done, and Craig left the place in good shape, with barely any sign he'd been there. I was extremely disappointed with Kulk. I call him due to my bath leaking. He could not find out why, but broke the knob that handles hot and cold for the shower, so replaced it. He also replaced a filter, and tested the show for leaking. He charged me $348 for this, which is an absolute rip off. Unreal. I told him the price was too high, and he would not hear it, he said "you win some and you lose some, and on this one I lost". It was a $5 plastic "no brand" knob, and a $20 "at best" filter he put it. This is no where worth $348.00 . He was so nice and pleasant, I was truly shocked how much he ripped us off for. I paid him, but we will never use him again nor recommend him. I think he charged us extra for his trouble shooting, which he never found the problem, and he had a helper, so he probably charged for 2 men, and it was not a 2 man job. I also told him my husband would go to the store and get the knob, since he had to leave to run a personal errand and he said no. And when I questioned him on the price he said he charged us for 2 trips. First, he had to leave for a personal errand, and second, I told him my husband would go get the plastic knob. That was part of the ploy to charge a ridiculous amount of money for a minor repair. read more

As a parish priest I have had, over the years, many tradesmen come and work on the church buildings with varying results. This year I needed some work done on my house. I contacted several plumbers and interviewed them all. I was extremely impressed with John Kulk's knowledge and his approach to solving a number of problems. He appeared early on the day agreed upon with his assistant Mike. They laid out their materials and equipment and began to work immediately. Neither one are smokers so there were no breaks...just diligent hard work. My Carpenter remarked how good they were and so did my electrician. After passing inspection flawlessly, they finished the roughing and plan to come back to install the fixtures. A few days later I was in a coordination bind. I needed each of the trades to come in sequential order for the gas fired fireplace. John made the time and came all the way down here, did his part of the job and did not even ask for more money.
