As someone who has never eaten here before, I cannot review their food. However, as someone one who has lived in this neighborhood for over 12 years I can certainly review what I call community etiquette! I have watched "PLG" change, and indeed evolve. The last thing I ever wanted to do was write a negative yelp review on someone's business; but, because this so heartbreaking to experience I feel compelled to say something. On Mother's Day, I was stranded just a few blocks from my home with my very fragile 77 years old dad due to car issues. My dad walks with a cane and suffers with chronic pain which makes it difficult to get around. Anyhow, he desperately needed to use a restroom. After going to two other places, that without hesitation they agreed to share their amenities... it turned out the bathrooms were located in the basement and would've been difficult for my dad to reach. That's when we tried Kulushkat. After explaining the situation to the waitress, she was happy to help and showed my dad to the restroom. As my dad was about to enter the bathroom the manager or owner (not exactly sure) said "NO, it is for paying customers only!" I truly understand that I was not a paying customer, but given the desperate situation of this fragile, senior gentleman you could have been more humane. You do not deserve any stars just for being cruel! Also, with the neighborhood rapidly changing I am glad to know that we still have a community gem. Finally, thanks to the owner of Green House located on 539 Flatbush Ave, who without hesitation allowed my dad to use the restroom. read more

Been here about 8 times, (probably bc its the only middle eastern place where i live). When ive eaten in, its always been the same guy and he has always had a poor attitude but nothing specifically overt. Just a general bad energy and attitude. One specific yesterday... - I was blown away by how they mismanaged my very simple delivery order. I have gotten delivery from them at least 4 times in the past and thered previously been no problem. Not yday though - yday I made a similar order to my "usual." 2 items : one was the veggie platter (over priced for the amount of food you get) and 2nd was the $7 hummus vege sandwich(appropriate priced).... 45 minutes later, the delivery arrived and all we got was the vege platter so i called to inform them, and clear as day, he stated that he could both see in the computer that my order was entered 100% correctly and that thus, they had made the mistake... what then happened that so perturbed me was how they dealt with their major error. I did not like the idea of waiting 45 minutes more for the sandwich so i asked they just cancel it - bc being understanding, i took the mellow attitude of, it happens and i get it that these things happen.. Im no stickler, nor am i unreasonable... but the terrible attitude they then treated me with and displayed was what shocked n upset me. Ive never seen anything like it nor been treated so poorly, as a customer. There was a passive and muffled "apology" that sounded forced. Immediately, he sounded defensive although totally unprovoked - almost as if it was MY fault they screwed up. Rudely and shockingly, I want to try to explain what occurred... he went on to explain how they chose to instead of giving me the requested refund, they were going to replace the item... what finally arrived was NOT a sandwich - I didnt think I was asking for anything unusual by asking to just be refunded. He rudely agreed.... until, after about 30 more minutes, the delivery guy is back, hands me a brown paper bag and says "your refund is in the bag" while quickly turning away to leave. When I open the bag, I was shocked, confused &insulted by how secretly spiteful, dishonest, rude, &outlandish the guys behavior demonstrated... AND, I open the bag & there was a $1 bill in it, a tiny side of tahini about 4 oz &a small side of cucumber salad,also about 4 oz. hummus. No explanation, just an angry & calculated unspoken message from the liar on the phone. I have never seen, nor HEARD OF, anything like this. I was so annoyed by this bag of nonsense id been sent that I did not bother to pick up the phone &call them back to address & confront what just happened. I think it says something when your order is so messed up & your afraid to call again bc the worker on the other end was/is so nasty and intimidating &unprofessional. It is really too bad because it was one of the few places in this neighborhood that I went to regularly and in the past I really wanted to see them succeed as a newish small biz. If this is how he thinks its appropriate to behave in his bizness, (or ANYWHERE n to ANYONE, for that matter!), i doubt he'll find any real lasting success. In my case, his completely random and unprovoked aggression, over his $7 mistake will cost him the $50 approximately i was spending weekly.. not to mention i will deter my friends from it so he can go without those more costly eat in bills id have brought him. Seriously hope this dude gets a handle over whatever his issues and deal is, when it comes to customer service. Honestly, their food was never terrific but for me, it was closeby, easy,healthy, and good enough, thus my repeat visits. Additionally, Im of lebanese descent so i particularly can speak to some of their food thru that lense. 1st, the baklava, stay away. Theres no way its made on sight n theres no way they dump it daily to keep the supply fresh - stale n gooey in all the wrong places. The simplest of dishes, the falafel, is over powered by the spice/seed in indian food (cant recall the name) n nowhere is it written or said that the food was not going to be traditional. That falafels taste was completely transformed with that spice. Shame shame shame on whomever is running this place... 1 additional note: on a later date, I didn't have my computer available to me so I called to place an order... he wouldn't take it!! He told me I had to go online to order, &again, in a nasty way. To summarize - mediocre food with absolutely the worst customer service. Don't waste your time. read more

Much of the Israeli Mideast fare here is loaded with the spice cumin or something like it. It is not to my liking. Tonight the room wad cold and unheated after a winter Noreaster . Much of the food could have been hotter. A side dish of roasted eggplant was taken out of the frig and plopped in a bowl for $6. It was intended for a falafel sandwich. The "homemade" apricot hamantaschen looked good, but was effectively flavorless. I had to buy 3 for $4 . The most enjoyable thing I had here tonight was a diet coke with ice. read more

I usually don't write reviews but my experience at Kulushkat was beyond horrible. They were mean and unprofessional. We were looking for a place for breakfast. All restaurants around the area were packed while this one was dead empty. No wonder why! They barely had anything. They had just opened but they did not have majority of the items in their menu. We ended up ordering improvised items but they were not apologetic at all. They even wanted to charge us extra for some of the items they had to change because they did not have the original items. Three of our orders from this place were great, but this last time was not good. After making the order we were called to be told that they were out of hummus (on a Friday afternoon), and they graciously offered to substitute it for something else. I needed hummus, so I just got some store baught hummus to go with our meal since we did take out. We ordered 3 portions of falafels, and they were all over cooked, and they were very small (maybe that's why they got over cooked). The most unprofessional restaurant I have ever seen. We went during a long weekend for a brunch. As soon as we sat down we were told that they don't have bread and no banana. We said okay, we still can enjoy the brunch. We asked for tea and coffee which we found out they are out of black tea and milk too! Also, we we're informed that we have to wait for the other drinks to get ready. We still decided to stay as other restaurants were packed and this one was empty. We order food and asked for lemonade but because it was a chilly day I asked for no ice and she told me I have to charge you more or give you half a glass!!!!! Hmmm. Good food, when they remember to put it in your order but terrible service. This review is for the Lefferts Garden location. Park Slope has always been on point. Well, we tried this spot over and over again. WHY??? The service is the slowest. How does a falafel take 90!minutes, and that was us going and picking it up. We had such delivery disasters, we were willing to pick up our order in hopes of being able to get faster service. The Park Slope, location has the food right but the Lefferts Garden, location hasn't been able to get into a groove. I ordered a falafel sandwich and what I got was pita stuffed with cabbage. When I called and told them the falafel was missing I was told that was impossible, placed on hold and when the server picked up the phone a Gina after waiting for 5 minutes he said, no sorry, that did not happen. Wow. They up charge for everything!!!! I was nervous to ask for a napkin. The falafels are tasty, when they remember to add them to your order. I write his hoping the management will try and make the appropriate changes. I want our neighborhood business to succeed. I will try again.... fingers crossed. read more

The hummus was ok, the shakshuka was runny (both the eggs and the tomato sauce around them), and worst of all my girlfriend found plastic in her schwarma-- a $17 schwarma at that, and which wasn't refunded despite that. I had the Israeli breakfast, The Mediterranean salad was not too overwhelming just the right tanginess. the pastries were great the eggplant was just fine everything was done really well no taste was too overwhelming, the mom's cake was coconut soft and moist on the inside. We went to Kulushkat on a bit of a whim - first night of a trip to the city, and the friend we were staying with lives nearby, so we decided to give this place a shot. This turned out to be our favorite meal of the whole weekend. I'll admit, we didn't go in for a lot of menu variety. All three of us ordered the Chicken Shawarma. But the beauty of the meal is that there are a variety of tastes, textures and colors on the plate no matter what you order, so I didn't feel as though I had missed anything. There's cabbage salad - fresh red cabbage shredded nicely and dressed perfectly. Falafel is spiced very nicely - I'd be hard-pressed to reverse engineer it and try to isolate the spices, but our all-around impression was that the ground chickpeas were well balanced with flavor and perfectly crisped - and oh so fresh! Probably the best falafel I've had anywhere. Cucumber salad was enjoyed by my companions as something of a cool palate cleanser - I can't offer any objective judgment on a vegetable I personally despise, except to say that it did not pollute the rest of my meal in any way :). We ordered some grape leaves as a side, and they were delightful little bundles - all of us enjoyed them. The meat itself was nothing short of perfect - tender shaved chicken bursting with the kind of spiced/garlic flavor that only comes through lengthy marination and slow roasting, all presented on a bed of rice pilaf. The tahini was a nice accompaniment - not at all the typical bland tahini, but something special that originally had me thinking it was a lemon yogurt sauce. I found myself scraping the bottom the container with the pita to get out the last drops. Speaking of which - for a guy who eats very little bread these days, I happily devoured what felt and tasted like a homemade pita. We finished our meal, somehow finding room for a small plate of delicious home-made pastries. The food was excellent. The prices were very reasonable. The atmosphere is cozy, but not out of character for NYC - and we felt really comfortable just being there. Ethan happened to be on duty that night, and really added to our evening - we found him to be friendly and interactive, as well as knowledgeable about the menu and willing to offer suggestions. I'd certainly return, even if our friend someday moves out of the neighborhood, we'll still be visiting the Botanic Gardens and this nearby place will certainly be a part of that adventure. read more
