The last two years have been incredibly disappointing. Since Mr. Lane Beasley has taken over as head of schools, the turnover of critical staff at this school has been frightening. My current understanding is that the school is even having to hire entirely new departments next year because of staff departures/transitions. I've watched some of the loveliest people be forced out this school to make way for someone who used to be a MS counselor at the school to become the full school (K-8) principal. At the end of 2025, without any warning, the middle school principal was let go our 3-5 principal took his place. The narrative we were told was that He left by his choice after learning he wouldn't be returning the next year. After a personal discussion with him, I am sickened that the narrative we were told in no way aligns with what happened, as he was told to clean out and leave with just a few months of the school year remaining. Then this last year, a beloved teacher had been promoted to our school's K-2 principal. Apparently, rather than providing her feedback or coming alongside her when she struggled in the first year of this new position, she was fired and replaced with our 3-8th grade principal (who is now K-8). All of these transitions have resulted in our assistant principals being overworked, our staff feeling unsupported, and confusion about who's actually in charge at the school. I'm also disappointed in the school choosing to align itself with a specific brand of American conservative evangelicalism rather than the "bible based" identity it claims. My understanding is that when teachers talked or prayed about the unrest in Minnesota from earlier in this year, it was met with an email from admin asking them to "steer away from politics". But it was perfectly okay for the head of schools to send out an easter message that complained about a Washington State millionaires tax? Apparently Mark 10:25 or the Apostle's charitable living in Acts can be overlooked to embrace a gospel of prosperity rather than one rooted in the Bible. Needless to say, this institution has gone downhill. I love NCA, its teachers, and its families, but as an institution it's fallen well out of line with its original mission. This school cares too much about optics, and less about practice. They even had a teach inservice event last year where teachers were instructed to create accounts and give 5 star reviews to the school to bolster its online image. I'd be surprised if this review stays up long before they have it removed, but know this is all coming from someone who's been around this place a long time and is sad to see how it's fallen.

However, they make you think you're getting a tutor who are experts on special education, adhd, and learning differences. But it's the lead person who is talking with you who has that background expertise, not the tutors you will be given. After researching the company further, the amount they pay their tutors is very small compared to what they charge customers. Employees say they get maybe one week instead of four weeks of training, like they were promised. We passed, but they kept calling several more times.

We enrolled at Academy of Play with high hopes and thoughtful intention. After leaving a program…read morethat did not align with our values we sought respect based Montessori informed care that would support our daughter's emotional growth and autonomy. Despite promises from Evelyn, our experience did not deliver what was communicated or expected. Our daughter had seven different teachers in six months with no immediate notice. Teachers appeared without warning and we would arrive for pickup to find an unfamiliar face while our daughter said we have a new teacher. These frequent transitions made it difficult to build secure relationships or consistency. Although the school markets itself as Montessori based, the teachers lacked Montessori training and often even basic familiarity. We were told staff were in Montessori training six months into their hire (which should have been done BEFORE they were even hired), yet their actions contradicted this, which led us to lose trust that training was occurring. These inconsistencies conflicted with our parenting framework and created confusion for our daughter. We often had to reteach core values at home. Our child now threatens both us and her dolls during play in addition to behaviors that go against everything we have worked for years to instill. Practices included forced apologies, bribes with toys or treats, threats of privilege loss, and gender shaming language i.e. "boys dont like pink, thats for girls." Children were also told not to cry, which was meant to be comforting, but is developmentally inappropriate. These practices do not align with Montessori or respectful caregiving. We were told a curriculum would be shared, but was never provided. The only time we had insight into our child's learning was when we scheduled meetings with Evelyn ourselves, where information specific to our child was also limited. A teacher said the children only work when Evelyn is present which made her input unreliable since she was not there often. Evelyn's expertise was a key reason we chose this program and when she was present it made a difference. However she was rarely in the classroom often just one or two days per week for a couple hours. Each day our daughter would ask if Miss Evelyn would be there and staff replied she is working in her office. Eventually our daughter stopped asking and said she is probably in her office working when she saw Evelyn's car. We later learned she was opening a coffee shop. This led us to believe the children were no longer her priority. During pickup we observed teachers on their phones or disengaged which was troubling for a program that emphasizes connection and observation. We were also told the school would be screen free, but a teacher showed a video. While the content was not inappropriate the use of screens contradicted stated values and eroded trust. Throughout the year we raised concerns calmly and directly with Evelyn. She was reassuring that change is coming but there was no follow through. When we asked why a curriculum still had not been provided since our child started attending, we were told the children were focusing on outdoor time due to summer and that teachers were focusing on Montessori training, though threats and bribes continued beyond that point. Evelyn also sent a parent survey but no follow up or next steps were communicated. Despite repeated efforts to engage nothing changed in a meaningful way, which broke our trust. Strengths included fresh organic meals, consistent outdoor play a meaningful friendship and Evelyn's knowledge when she was present, though her time with the children was limited. We gave this program every opportunity to meet the expectations it set. Our decision to leave was not based on one issue, but the cumulative impact of repeated inconsistencies and misalignments. In the end, we had to prioritize our daughter's emotional well-being and learning environment. Families deserve clarity, consistency, and integrity. Children thrive in environments where those values are not only stated, but lived daily.

Ms. Evelyn (the owner/founder) and her staff have taught our child so many skills, both academic (colors, shapes, letters, numbers, etc.) and practical (jacket on and off, shoes on and off, handwashing, toileting, etc.), and our toddler is meaningfully more capable and independent as a result. We love Academy of Play so much that we jumped on the chance to send our younger children (twins, age 1) there as well. Both twins are happy at Academy of Play, but one of our twins, who needs support for developmental delays, is thriving and has made huge leaps forward since attending. Ms. Evelyn and her teachers obviously care for the children and there's very little staff turnover. I wholeheartedly recommend this gem of a daycare!

He was very disrespectful about it. He told her they have no refunds . He than proceeded to take another girl who was tsking the drive test in place of my daughter mind you wearing the same ugg shoes. My daughter is native american and the other girl was European american white. I couldn't attend my daughter's drive test that day I had to work. But I believe that my daughter was wrongfully discriminated against. My daughter is sweet and very respectful. When I called to speak to a manager. The young girl who answered was very rude. And stateded"we don't give any refunds" she started "the Washington state department of licensing says my daughter can't wear those type of shoes to take a dri e test" I asked if that was stated on the 911 driving school website. She said yes. I asked her are you sure. (It doesn't say that anywhere on their website) she never got the manager. I than asked if my daughter can take the test with another driver. This was an option. My daughter is rescheduled. I feel like this needs to be addressed. I wonder how many people, young kids of color they do this too. They just take their money and not give them a chance to even take the tests. No refu d policy needs to be adjusted or a new staff. Who do not discriminate. This is not right.
