Two stars for quick replies and fully discussing your needs (even though it sounds like a script they're reading). However, they make you think you're getting a tutor who are experts on special education, adhd, and learning differences. But it's the lead person who is talking with you who has that background expertise, not the tutors you will be given. After researching the company further, the amount they pay their tutors is very small compared to what they charge customers. Employees say they get maybe one week instead of four weeks of training, like they were promised. We passed, but they kept calling several more times. read more

I was charged after cancelling, the tutor-matching algorithm often requires cycling through 3-5 tutors before finding the right fit and there's a clear breakdown in communication between departments. I signed up for a one-time statistics lesson. I have a PhD but not in statistics, and needed very specific help understanding some equations in one particular publication. Varsity Tutors hooked me up with a statistics professor who was capably able to walk me through the equations and answer my questions. It was an excellent one-on-one lesson, exactly what I needed. The session was recorded, so I could take screenshots later as lecture notes. The whiteboard was supposed to be saved for download and that didn't work, but with the recording available I was able to use the screenshots instead. A glitch but no biggie. It cost me $199 for the 1.5 hour session. Cancelling the subscription was awful. You can't cancel through the website. The Live Chat rep also cannot cancel, but gave me the phone number (855) 791-0588 to call. The phone rep was awful. She kept asking increasingly invasive and irrelevant questions; my personal hobbies should not be required to cancel a service. After I told her that I'd wanted a single lesson and got that, she gave me a condescending lecture about how I might benefit from more tutoring. Just so unpleasant. read more

They talked me into a $900 deposit and after we used only 3 hours in a year, they pocketed 100-% of the money and told me I had to pay $369/mo for 4 Hours per month. I should have read the reviews before signing up for their package. Our first tutor didn't show up at the scheduled time, yet Varsity still shows the session happened in my account page after repeated calls to tell them this. They spent a lot of time trying to find the 2nd tutor, but he also doesn't have the adequate knowledge or experience and had to google answers live during our session. What's worse is their business practice. Once you sign up, you should not expect money back; they will not issue refund if you are not happy with the service. And they automatically charge you on recurring basis without your explicit consent, you'll have to try very hard to convince them to remove the recurring billing. read more

Online payment wouldn't work for me, then chat help said "oh, ok, maybe let me try?" and then they charged me for upgraded service that I didn't want ($200+ what i wanted!). I signed my twin boys up for Varsity Tutors in 8th-grade. I wanted to prepare them as much as possible for what was to come in high school in both Math and ELA. We signed up for the online sessions which works well for us. They meet with their tutors twice a week - one for Math (Kathy) and the other for ELA (Julie). Both tutors are great with our boys. They take their time with them and makes sure they understand each concept before moving on. I appreciate how they teach to my boys' ability and they are very patient when doing so. They keep them engaged, encourages confidence and genuinely cares about them as their student. As parents, our anxiety has reduced drastically knowing someone could help our boys with school subjects that is a challenge for us. ELA not as much, but definitely math! read more

I was interested in learning how to produce electronic music and didn't know where to start. I had watched some youtube videos and read a lot of blogs but found that I was spending a lot of time consuming information but not actually making music. I have played guitar for a long time so I have a semi tuned ear but no idea about how to use production software. I contacted Varsity Tutors about a tutor for Ableton Live and was paired with Diego from Miami. Even though he was across the country, he was able to get me started making some beats on our first session. With the platform I am able to share my screen and he coaches me on where to click and also where to look on the web for musical inspiration. This helps a ton for retention because I'm doing all the work myself. So far we have reproduced a popular EDM song (Calling by Sebastian Ingrosso) and made a Lofi hip hop remix with a Travis Scott song. We meet twice a week and I am getting confident in my abilities. Not quitting my day job yet but Diego and Varsity have been awesome so far and I look forward to every session. As far as other more traditional academic subjects, I took a one off french lesson before a trip to France. I mainly wanted a refresher on conversational french and tips to get around town (I took French in high school over a decade ago). I paired with Meghan who is a college student who studied abroad in France. She was able to cut straight to the phrases I needed to know and helped with my pronunciation. By the end of one session I could say a bunch of phrases including asking someone to take my picture and ordering in a restaurant. She even had etiquette tips. I went online and filled out the form for Varsity for tutoring for our 13 year old son with some specifics requests. I was socked when they called me within and hour from their local office and were fully informed on my request. They connected us with a terrific tutor and my son has been working with him for about six weeks on algebra. What impressed me about these folks is that the tutor match is the top priority; they understand if the fit isn't right--it won't work. They've been incredibly responsive, and the tutor meets us in person and a mutually agreed upon location--in our case a local library. The prices are a lot better than the neighborhood tutoring center we were paying for near our son's middle school. There, he only got a few minutes of one on one time. With Varsity, the sessions are billed by the hour and they gave packages; the more you buy the lower the hourly rate. The last thing I would say is that the quality of the tutors seems quite high and they have passed criminal background checks--which is important to us. They call us regularly to check in and see if we're happy--who dies get anymore? read more

My 8-year-old son was struggling with reading and writing. I would read with him every night, but he just wasn't picking it up very easily. I decided to try Varsity Tutors to see if we would have better success. Laura is so great! She comes prepared with the right level of reading/writing activities to keep my son engaged. She brings material for his interests, like reading mini minecraft stories. She has also been helpful in giving me things to do with him in between her times with us. My son has been working with Laura consistently once a week for about 8 months and my son's reading levels and confidence have increased dramatically! read more

Wish there was some kind or guarantee with this. Thought this would elevate my 9th grader to acceptable grades and it hasn't helped at all. In fact his grades went from a C+ average to all Fs in 5 months. I understand that this is not the fault of the varsity but they sure did put on a good show to get me to sign up. They were like promises with put promising. Also read everything. I was told that I could cancel anytime when infact I couldn't. They made it sound like a phone plan. So i went to cancel and they informed me that i still have to pay for the remaining months he didnt use. But first they kept getting me to lower my plan. The lady lowered the price 4 times as I declined each previous offer. Went from 279 to 49 a month then when I declined that she said oh sorry you have a contract so you cant cancel. Perfect ill honor that and you can take my 279 a month but you wont be seeing my child again. I would rather let them take the money and us not use it than put him in another session. read more

My daughter is going into middle school this fall and was concerned that she was not prepared for Math classes. I contacted Varsity and they aligned us up with Madi. This couldn't have been a better match for my child. So far this summer we have had two sessions a week and in my home. We have only completed 9 hours but I can already tell that my daughter is feeling very confident again. This has been the best investment I've made for my child. It is so worth the money. I had high hopes for this company but the delivery didn't measure up to my expectations. After seeing well-groomed, personable-looking tutors on their website who had been educated at colleges such as Stanford and other top tier universities, the first tutor my daughter was assigned came from a school that has a fairly mediocre reputation in my area. He showed up late, then told my daughter he had to leave 15 minutes early. On top of that, his personality and appearance were such that she had no interest in working with him. After wasting time with several other tutors who just weren't working, we finally found one we liked but she ended up moving so that didn't last. We also tried to use their online tutoring, but had terrible problems trying to get that to work on a consistent basis that we decided it was wasting too much time. The worst part is that their hours expire. After I bought this pricey package, we ended up not using all the hours before my daughter graduated in May because of one problem after another. I thought I'd give it a try again with my younger daughter, only to sign in to my account in November and find the remainder of my hours had been forfeited! read more

We started tutoring so that my middle school student could have instant access for math help and we have have progressed toward having weekly lessons for all my children to allow them to advance where they need it. While the actual tutoring was excellent and my friend's kids learned a lot, i am writing this review because i think their business practices are extremely deceptive, possibly fraudulent. I signed up to have my friend's twins receive math tutoring over the summer of 2022. The transactions were all over the phone where the salesperson asked me if i wanted a 3 month or a 6 month contract, and i chose 3 months. I was never told that it is an automatically renewing contract. The contract itself was never sent to me but signed by one of the students despite my being the primary contact. I was charged for the 4th month and when i called to asked for a refund, i was given the big run around that went on for several weeks with promises that someone would get back to me. eventually, after 4-5 people who promised returned calls, i spoke to someone (several weeks later) who said it is in the contract that i signed to automatically renew. they had however refunded one month for one of the students, which made no sense. if i got the refund for one, i should have gotten the refund for the other. The students continued to get calls from the tutor after the end of the third month, so they didnt know the service was over and kept using it. After about 3 weeks of not being called back, i was so furious at their practices i was ready to sue them on principle. I still may. read more

We used Varsity Tutoring for my son who needed some help for a re-take of his SAT. Our time frame was very limited and my son is very particular on his time management. The tutor that we used, Hammad was amazing! My son instantly liked his style and his flexibility. In the end my son's scores went up 150 points in a matter of 4 weeks!! The only complaint is that sometimes the tutors were confused about time zones thus why we ended up cancelling other provided tutors and just ended up using Hammad who always had the eye on the prize. We've been using a tutor from Varsity Tutors for over a year now. Our tutor comes to the house, and works with any of our three sons depending on who needs help. He is flexible if we need to change a day based on tests or assignments, and is also available for a quick phone call if they need help with something. He is very knowledgeable about a lot of different subjects as well, since he was a teacher before at a private high school. We highly recommend Varsity Tutors. Not sure about the "big brother" comment from the other reviewer. We only had calls early on to check in, but once they knew it was working out with our tutor, the calls stopped. I've never felt pressure to purchase additional hours or purchase anything we didn't need. read more

I started using Varsity Tutors right after I found out I was going to be studying for a year in France my freshman year of college. I did sessions twice a week during summer and now I am doing them once a week in France. I was very intent on becoming conversational in French as quickly as possible and my tutor definitely helped me do that. I have been learning French for 5 months now (2 of which have been in France) and I am close to being fully conversational with actual French people and I am moving on to intermediate level grammar. I give this company one star for their professional advertisement and already have put in a complaint with the BBB. I had a very different experience with this company. I was in need of a Statistics tutor and my local college didn't provide one so I had to look elsewhere. I live in Bremerton and amazingly I still couldn't find one locally so I started to consider commuting to one. This company was advertised as local(Seattle) which is why I originally looked into their services to begin with. I was reluctant but in need of some help asap and I ended up being talked into trying their online based services. Instead of just being able to pay as you go they said you had to buy a package of hrs and the larger the package the less expensive the hrs. With that being said I still ended up paying over $60 per hr. That isn't cheap for a student so I expected them to deliver. I was paired with tutors from the East coast and there were many time zone issues with meeting as well as some technology problems that occurred. Shortly after being paired with the first tutor he went on a family vacation and I was left waiting to find out when he might be back or when I might be given another. After several phone calls I was finally given another tutor who happened to be another individual from the east coast time zone. My first session with her was cut out early due to technology issues responsible on their end. She attempted to continue the session over a phone call which was not effective at all. When she thought the assignment was finished she then attempted to talk through the rest of the hour by telling me how impressed my teacher would be with me and how much she was going to help me and was surprised when I finally pointed out the fact that my hr was almost over and I wasn't through the assignment. (They never once helped me complete an entire assignment and always cut me off beforehand.) The next day she told me she didn't have time to meet with me but to text her questions while she rode the subway and she would text me answers. This clearly was not of help to me and not a legitimate session and on top of that she only texted me wrong answers. After a few minutes I let her know that I didn't think this was working for me and she said she understood. After checking my account online I saw that I had been billed again. If I wasn't as desperate as I was I would have refunded the rest of my hours before ever reaching this point. After speaking to the office every each time something like this occurred I was told that I would be given replacement hrs. I asked for the refund of the remainder of my hrs within the time frame they said I had to do so and they are now refusing to refund me them stating that they were donated and have only agreed to do so if I sign something stating that I will never talk about this publicly or they can sue me and I would have to pay for it. I have not signed it. Please don't waste your money on this company and the poor ideals of the people running it!!! Next time I will post adds on campus for a tutor and put money directly in their pockets, and likely for less then $60 per hour. I have written this in the hopes that it prevents someone else in greatly wasting their time and resources as I have. read more

I was a bit skeptical and admittedly picky about the tutor because of past experience with other tutors. They were patient and professional, and we got the BEST tutor. I've been using Varsity Tutors for my two boys this past academic year and it has been a huge help. We use the service on an as-needed basis, so when one of them is struggling in math or science, or has a big writing or Spanish project coming up, we ask the tutor(s) to come and help. I think the service is designed more toward regularly scheduled/weekly or bi-weekly support for kids given that I get occasional calls from Varsity Tutors telling me they've noticed we've not used their service for some time and wondering why that is (I wish they'd stop calling because each time I explain we use the "parachute in" model). But by and large the tutors have been really great and helpful, though we did have one who didn't explain a science problem correctly which backfired when my son completed his assignment in school. I'm sure it is better for the tutors to meet with the kids regularly so they have a better grip on what the kids are studying and are more able to help when it comes time to actually provide the tutoring. But we just don't need that much help. Overall, the service has been a great crutch to lean on when needed. read more
