St. Francis Hospice was suggested for my mom by the Palliative Care Department at Kaiser. After…read moremeeting with the case worker, we decided on their services for in home hospice care. The case worker, nurses and those who bathed my mom were excellent. They never rushed her, were always so kind and gentle and she enjoyed their visits and chats. Her nurse (Yun Jin) never made our concerns seem unimportant and always made sure checked our concerns on moms health and condition. They really were calming for me as I felt the nurse was just a call away and would be available if my mom suddenly took a turn for the worse. When I needed surgery, we placed my mom in a private care home and the hospice services followed her. She had a different team, because it was in a different area, but the same great level of care was provided. Because my mom was stable she "Graduated" from hospice and was released to her own doctors. Unfortunately, two months later she passed away. Some things that I had to get used to were: 1) The doctor never visited but was kept well informed via the nurse 2) All blood work, doctor's visits, treatments ended. Eye exams, hearing aid adjustments, ear exams were permitted but very little else as this was comfort care. Any problems were addressed by the nurse. My mom's doctor continued to follow my mom's progress via twice monthly calls with us. It was difficult for our minds to go from a mentality of healing my mom to one of offering her comfort but we did eventually get used to it. After my mom "graduated" from Hospice I realized just how much they had helped my mom and I and what peace and calm they brought to our minds. Impending death of a loved one is difficult and dealing with that day to day realization can be frightening. They helped alleviate that making us feel like we weren't alone on this journey with my mom but we had a great support team standing behind us. Thank you St. Francis Hospice for being such a great team with our family to care for my mom. I would recommend them to anyone needing this kind of care. They are excellent!

If don't use them you aren't helping your loved one. I will never want anyone else to to go through what we did. St Francis helped make it easier to deal with it.

After hours, actually days in the ER and receiving surgery as the doctor put it " to put a metal plate and other hardware in", person was released to rehab. Thankful for the Villas, a rehabilitation center and part of the St.Francis system. Still unable to live independently, patient chose to move over to the adult assisted living center on the same property. From the Villas it was an easy transition to Hale O Meleana by wheelchair through the courtyards. Thankful for the good care person is receiving at Hale O Meleana. Rooms are spacious and individual units with limited kitchen: full size refrigerator, microwave, hotpot... what else does one need? Not much when the delicious meals are provided in the dining room. Coffee and cookies available on self serve basis in the meeting room. Lots of activities for residents. Crafts, games, social events. There is a lovely garden as well as courtyard for those wanting fresh air. Hale O Meleana is a great option for those not ready to transition to long term adult housing which requires down payment (think Craigside, Arcadia, Kahala Nui) but needs temporary assistance. Charges are month to month.

I would highly recommend this facility to anyone because the staff is great and the place is clean.

I've looked for caregivers through the years and it's been challenging to find trained Indvidual's to care for my patients, especially the Seniors that have limited support and/or working families. Fortunately, I was able to review the DOH webpage and locate agencies that are licensed to provide care such as Senior Helpers, knowing the company is licensed provided peace of mind knowing they are in professional hands. Families I've worked with shared that they've been able to get their Long-Term Care Insurances to assist in getting care but require a licensed entities (along with some ADL deficits) to qualify. I've had a family share with me having been able to get a companion to escort their loved one to meet with her friends over the weekend and another share with me how Senior Helpers was able to care for their loved one during their shift, having taken her to the ER and being with her when no family was available. Knowing they have caregivers that go the extra mile and care for their clients is something to be appreciated.

Especially for the high price tag, maybe if they would train and compensate the workers appropriately maybe they would do quality work.
