Today (at the afternoon appointment I scheduled this morning) Minerva called my insurance company's customer service (the worst, right?) to figure out my exact plan. Another receptionist was patient and persistent enough to play phone tag with me when I had questions about some medical stuff. I didn't have dental insurance for a time and they put me on the "office plan" through which every other preventive visit was free. The office is super clean and every chair faces a long, tall windowed wall. The location, 40th/Market, is what it is. If you are a stickler for swanky locations, you might be freaked out as you walk through 40th street market after passing the projects across the street. Home sweet Philly! I really like how Dr. Leavitt, a Penn Dental grad, stayed in the neighborhood. She is an asset to the community. Even though I moved into center city, I still make the journey to see her in my old hood. Oh and if you do end up going to see her, tell her I referred you! It took me a few days to get over the trauma that Dr. Kirkwood put me through to extract those 2 teeth. I feel that he is some kind of a sadist, putting me through the pain that I felt from the needles he injected me with, without anesthetizing the area where the injections were going. As I was screaming from the horrible pain, all I was told that it would be over in a matter of minutes. I think he enjoyed hearing my horrible screams. It was quite barbaric. I definitely would not recommend them to anyone. If you feel apprehensive about your dental experience, definitely find another practice.

I arrived for my appointment about 15 minutes early and was "finished" by the time my original appointment was supposed to start. It took more time for me to check in and take off my coat than it took for the hygienist to "clean" my teeth. She didn't even bother to polish every tooth -- I guess the back of every third one counts. I was also told not to come back unless I would agree to a deep cleaning. Considering the non-existence of a regular cleaning, I can only guess how shallow the deep must be. Guess the search for a good dentist continues.

That's why I asked about the cost at the time--how much would a root canal cost without insurance coverage? Your front desk told me it would be between $650 and $750. Then I asked, what if insurance covers it? Your front desk said insurance would cover half, meaning I would pay between $325 and $375. On the day of my treatment, I paid $325. If that was not the cost of the root canal, then what was that payment for? Later, you sent me a bill asking for an additional $745. My insurance covers X-rays, cleaning, and fillings, so I am very confused. To this day, I am still very angry because I remember everything very clearly. When I first inquired, the front desk told me $650-$750. When I paid after the procedure, the front desk collected $325 from me, assuming insurance would cover half. If my insurance did not cover it, then my out-of-pocket cost should have been $650. However, when you received my insurance details, you did not immediately confirm whether it was still in the waiting period. Instead, you had me undergo the root canal without clarifying the situation, only to send me a bill two weeks later stating that my insurance was still in the waiting period. I have no issue with my insurance's waiting period. My issue is that the price your front desk originally told me was inconsistent. When I called the second time to ask, one front desk staff member told me $850. Then I clearly heard her colleague next to her correct her and say, "No, you should tell her it's around $1,050." If you have recordings from that time, I truly hope you can listen to what your front desk actually said. If the price was $1,050, then assuming insurance covered half, why was I charged $325 initially? You said this was a communication issue, but I am very sensitive to numbers, and I do not believe I misunderstood them. At the very least, I got straight A's in math when I was in school. Even after two years, when I talk with my friends I'm still angry about this happening.
