CRESCENT CITY, CA Just to mention a few of my bad experiences.......after my 1970 Pontiac GTO had been sitting in my garage for over 25 years, due to a malfunctioning engine; and because at the time it was more important to provide for my family. After retiring from over 35 years in law enforcement, my kids persuaded me into restoring my GTO which I bought new..........THIS IS WHEN MY NIGHTMARE BEGAN. First mistake: TAKING IT TO KYLE'S AUTO REPAIR AND RESTORATION. They refused to give me a written estimate as I requested. And said they would charge me by the hour but, promised it wouldn't cost me very much to repair... LIE !!! After nearly a year, Kyle and his father Curtis ended up charging me close to $31,000, After all was said and done........ for a job that should of cost only about 7 to 8 thousand dollars. Did you know, to replace the engine that I purchased elsewhere and had delivered to Kyle's garage to be installed in my GTO you had to remove both fenders and the bumper first?!??!? NEITHER DID I !! Now, my new transmission that they installed had no first gear and will start in any position the gear is placed in. That's why Kyle warned me to apply my brakes before starting the car. While my GTO was in Kyle's possession my positraction in my GTO was stolen. Kyle and his father replaced it with a single wheel drive unit. Also my original gas tank was taken and replaced with a cheaper tank. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE ORIGINAL GAS TANK TO BEGIN WITH. Kyle also rewired my GTO, now I have no horn or backup lights. And due to to bad wiring it caused my electric radiator fans to burn out the transfer switch. Which I had repaired at a different shop. Plus, Kyle charged me for new parts that he never installed in my GTO. He also charged me for a supposedly new car battery that had three dead cells and had to be replaced shortly after getting my car back because the battery wouldn't hold a charge. I just mentioned a few things that went wrong while Kyle and his father had my car. PLEASE BE WARNED..... I filed a complaint with the California bureau of auto repair (B.A.R.). After the B.A.R.'S investigation they ruled in my favor and they agreed that I definitely was taken advantage of by Kyle and his father, Curtis.......However, I discovered that the B.A.R. has no teeth. They informed me that their hands are tied because there hadn't been enough complaints filed against Kyle's auto and restoration....... Folk's this is like your local municipality refusing to install traffic lights at a known dangerous intersection, until there's a certain amount of fatalities that had occurred. I hired a local attorney, but he proved to very incompetent and ineffective......... I'm still looking for a competent attorney!! I had been screwed twice. First by Kyle and his father, Curtis and now by the attorney that I hired to seek justice on my behalf.... Folks, I believe that people should support their local businesses but, NOT WHEN THEY STEAL AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE PUBLIC !!!! read more

I had Kyles do some repairs and preventative work last year in December. Suddenly 11 months later I had a coolant leak! I had Kyles take a look at it. The part in question was still under warranty. The problem was somewhat stubborn....requiring two trips to his shop to fix. However I am extremely impressed with his professionalism and abilities. The repair was covered by the warranty. I figured if they were half as good as their reviews I might be okay. Well good news they are great. I received excellent service. I felt safe and comfortable having them work on my car. I was a little wary seeing a mechanic with all 5-star reviews, but Kyle's Auto Repair deserves every one of them. I've never had such a great experience at a mechanic's. We were in town on vacation, and the check engine light on our 2008 Honda Fit started flashing when the car accelerated. The car also started shaking when it was idling. We were worried about driving back to the Bay Area without getting it checked out, but we were dreading dealing with a mechanic. We described the situation to Curtis, and he offered to hook the car up to the diagnostic machine to see if there were any stored codes from the flashing check engine light. He asked us about the last place we fueled up the car (as fuel issues can sometimes cause the shaking), and after we mentioned it'd been a long while since we'd had a compression test, or any maintenance, done on the car, he offered to do that and replace the spark plugs if needed. He laid out the costs of each piece of the diagnostic work and the parts involved for us, and spent a while on the phone with different suppliers trying to get us the less-expensive air filter that was supposed to be in stock. It was only a difference of $12 between the two, but he didn't hesitate to make the calls, and eventually got the less expensive filter. Kyle did the work on the car and tested it out, and now the shaking is gone and the acceleration is much smoother, all for much less than we would've been charged anywhere in the Bay Area. Next time our car is coming up for routine maintenance, it's tempting to plan another trip to Crescent City for another trip to Kyle's. I never would have imagined spending an hour or two at a mechanic's would leave me in a better mood, but Curtis and Kyle are wonderful people who do a great job, and I can't recommend them more strongly. read more

While on a camping trip along the Northern California coast where it seemed like nothing was going right, low and behold the clutch in our Subaru failed, leaving us stranded only slightly north of Brookings, Oregon. At nearly six o'clock on a Friday night, it seemed like we were going to be stranded. I picked up my phone in an attempt to find any shop that was open. Even though we had run into some real road blocks on that trip, the fates aligned when we found Kyle's shop! Kyle and his dad, Curtis, were staying open late to finish a job for someone else who was in a pickle, and they were happy to allow us to drop our car at their shop to take a look. Not only were Kyle and Curtis incredibly helpful when we were in a bind, they went out of their way to get us the help we needed from a ride to our hotel room, to allowing us to leave our car in their shop until we were able to retrieve it a week later (we live in Reno and had to leave Crescent city on Saturday in order to make it back to work on time). These guys are awesome. If I lived remotely close, I'd give them my business any time I needed anything car related. Thanks for all the help, you guys are awesome! read more

10/10. I got towed here because I got a rock stuck in my tire and it began smoking a little when I was driving it. Kenny was so kind, helpful, and quick to identify and resolve this issue. My family and I were vacationing in Crescent City and my 2005 Odyssey broke down due to electrical problems. Of course, it was Saturday when it happened. Kyle was very motivated to help me figure out what was wrong with my car even before I brought it in, researching possible problems and looking for parts that I might need. The problem ended up being a failed battery, and he went to great lengths to properly diagnose it and make sure that my old battery was underperforming. He wasn't even going to charge me any labor, just charging me for the battery I bought from him. Of course, I paid him extra for his time, as I was very happy with the result. Kyle is extremely ethical, very intelligent, and very helpful. I pride myself in being a good judge of character, and I could not ever see him ripping you off. He's a class act as far as I'm concerned. I believe that any person could trust him to not price gouge or take advantage of lack of car knowledge on the part of a customer. I don't leave reviews often, unless a place just really impresses me all around. From the moment I walked through the door, I felt welcome. Curt and I chatted for a while. He explained to me that they had a few projects going on and that the earliest they could look at my Blazer would be about a week. I towed my ailing truck there and was set on not hearing back from them for a while. A day and a half later and Kyle had it finished. The bill wasn't nearly as bad as I had anticipated either. I planed a road trip from Washington to Missouri along the California coast. My car decided to stop working just 40 miles north of Crescent City, CA. I had it towed to Kyles Auto Repair and Restoration. Kyle and his dad stayed late past closing to take a look at my car and gave me the bad news that it would cost $7000 to fix (engine problem). Since the car was only worth $3500, I decided to scrap it. Kyle and his dad said they would take it to the scrapyard for me, at no charge. They also drove me to the nearest Hertz rental car, at no charge. Without a rental car available, they drove me to the nearest hotel, at no charge. Tomorrow, it just so happens that they will be traveling south to a drag race in Samoa, CA. They are dropping me off, with all my gear, at the Eureka Airport to pick up a rental car, at no charge. I highly recommend Kyles Auto Repair and Restoration. They cannot be surpassed in respects to customer service, and they will go beyond their means to get you back on the road again. read more

My dawg and I were no different, as our clutch went out on the hill leaving Crescent City. My fuel injector was replaced not just ran through with some cleaner so big difference and i spent the same money you charged so in my opinion it was still a waste to pay 200 you didnt resolve the issue which is usually the case when you go to charge someone what you usually quoted them the shop who fixed it said you couldve gone further and corrected the situation since you already had my car taken apart but its alright it seemed you didnt really have any experience with my car model in particular so ill take the blame i should've just waited and taken it to a better staffed shop i just look at it as i donated 200 which is what I usually spend on a pair of Jordan's and it was more than one shop who diagnosed the faulty fuel injector neither of which charged to just hook up their code reader to my vehicle read more

Kyle is a great guy and both him and is Dad are honest upstanding folks. They didn't even charge me to take a look at my tire (which was getting low on one side) and check my breaks (for my piece of mind after I heard a lot of squealing). I called asking for labor costs and the guy said that only they could provide the parts at a 40% mark up. Moreover, only their parts could be used because their insurance would not allow customers to provide the parts. I researched that and could not find one instance of insurance requiring the shop to provide the parts. He changed his story when I mentioned how unusual that is. He then began talking about chicken eggs and cooks. I found the conversation to be dishonest, and thus bring to question the honesty of the shop as a whole. read more
