My friend recommended the hazelnut Kürtösh but the pistachio one looked so good that I did what any normal person would do... got both! I preferred the pistachio Kurtosh. The hazelnut one was like candy on top of the cone and very crunchy like candy. These are made to order so take around 10 or 15 minutes. Not really ideal for a grab and go but was worth the stop. They have a ton of other pastries as well that are pay by the pound. The kurtosh was really good, especially with coffee. This homey café is about one thing - Delicious, passed-down-from-mama recipe pastries and cakes. They're pretty proud of their house specialty - the twisty Hungarian pastry called (funnily), Kurtosh. It's quite good. Honestly, I'd say forget the pastry twister and go one of the Slab Cakes instead. Oh, so good! So far, my favourite has been the Catastrophe Flourless Choc Cake. Or mayyyybe actually the Lemon Crumble Cheesecake. Pretty much mention Mum's Chocolate Cake and I'm ready to trip someone over for a bite! If you can't choose, you could order a sliver of each and call it day. This is the best bit about Kurtosh - everything is sold by weight, and there's no minimum (or maximum) for what you buy. I'm a big fan of any European eatery or drinkery :D!!! Been to the Polish Restaurant up the road from here a few times and always come down to Kürtosh for a warm brew & a Hungarian Donut .. the nutella is LOVE good :)!! First time i went here i thought it was bizzarre that the cakes on display were sold in weight rather thsn per slice haha.. first place I've ever heard of that :)!! I took the opportunity to get a 2 bite size peice which was 50 grams of every cake i thought looked good :D. After i got close to choosing 20 peices of cake the guys were looking around for my mates but i was like it's only me & I'm hungry haha!! Got a cold overloaded infused tea to go with the cake challenge :), i took at least one bite of each and went back for 2nds with ones i enjoyed the most.. you could say i was in a food coma towards the end haha ;)!! In my opinion the cakes were nice & definitely tasty but the 3 or 4 times i had come back after the cake eating stomach torture i have settled with the few fantastically delicous flavours of the Hungarian Donut with a warm Or cold Brew :D!! Nice bakery-cafe which sells cake by weight. Presentation: There were about 12-15 different cakes on display. All looked really good. I went for the strawberry cream sponge cake. Taste: It tasted really good. It wasn't too sweet and the crust of the sponge had a really nice texture. because it wasn't too overly sweet, i had no problems demolishing it. Also ordered a fruit green iced tea which was super refreshing. It was a hot day so this was much needed. Service: Good service. Staff were polite. However, I noticed there were quite a few vacant tables with dirty dishes which needed removing. Location/Atmosphere: Located on crown street in Surry Hills. Has a rustic feel to it. What?? A dessert bar?? And its not at a wedding/christening/birthday??? Game on!!! Slab cakes is where it's at kids. Chilled slab cakes to be precise - do not pass up on the Almond, Pear & Frangipane cake - dear god how do they get this so right? Despite the awesomeness of this one, their others can be hit and miss. Although i was told by my aunty that the Cinnamon and Walnut was by far her favourite and she's a self proclaimed cake connoisseur (if thats even a thing). The concept behind purchasing by weight is genius, order as little or as much as you want. Heads up, at 10pm, they finish off the last batch of Kürtösh so if you want some authentic hungarian pastry in your belly, make sure to get in before you're politely rejected (as was the case when I asked - don't even talk to me about it - I'm still crushed). read more

The concept is appealing but the execution isn't good! I like that I could order whatever I want in whatever size I would like and pay by the weight. So, I had the chance to sample a few things. Flavors were OK but textures needed some work. The staff seemed a bit bored and weren't the most helpful with my questions. You know those places that are so great that you find yourself in a place of tension about telling everyone you know how amazing they are because then the little secret gold mine of a cafe you know no longer becomes a secret? Well, this is definitely that place for me. I love that they are open till late! I love that they are a cozy cafe! I love that they make great coffee! I love that they have amazing cakes! I love that they have something unique to offer! This is not your average cafe. ABOVE average! They may not serve much for the savoury palette but man do they cater for the sweet tooth. I'm pretty sure it is the first store to display that they sell their cakes by weight. What does this mean? Instead of going to a cafe and ordering a slice of cake for $10+ and receiving a portion size you are unhappy with because it's too big or too small, kürtösh let you pay for the slice size you want. That's right, tell them how big (or small) you want it and they'll weigh the slice & you pay for what you want. Brilliant! But that's not all, their signature kürtösh Hungarian baked pastry/roll/donut/heavenly creation is a must try! Never seen anything like it in Sydney & I tell ya, will be a hard one to beat if I do see anything close to it. Check out the photo for an example. The decor is excellent, staff are friendly & well trained. Baristas are brilliant. Atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Could definitely sit in here for a couple hours with great company. Usually when you buy by weight, it ends up being more expensive than you expect (I'm looking at you, fro yo shops) but somehow at kurtosh the opposite seems to be true. I ordered one of their savoury pastries, the one with roasted eggplant and hummus and it came to a sweet $3.70! Very reasonable and quite delicious. This place is mainly about sweets however, with their cakes also being sold by weight. The cool thing about this is that you can have as little or as much as you like. This means that you don't have to go full-binge just to get your sweet fix, and it is also convenient for the FOMO victims like myself who would like to get a small piece of a couple of cakes to avoid making a regretful decision. We've only had this pastry once before and were hooked from the first bite, so our expectations were high (like a chimney...ha). We were not disappointed! This is why I hate Sydney! (Joking) There are things here I can't have back home in Newcastle. Of course we have cafes and cake stores but I haven't seen something like Kurtosh. I have visited the Darlinghurst store too and have yet to be disappointed. There are teacakes, brownies and cheesecakes GALORE! A sweet tooths dream. My partner and I ordered the cheesecake brownie and fig and walnut teacake. The teacake was lovely, perfect with a cuppa, and the brownie wasn't too indulgent. Just the right amount of chocolaty goodness. The staff were friendly. Even having a laugh with us after offering coffee to the only two people in Sydney that don't drink it. He threatened to kick us out. You can choose the size of your slice with pricing around $4.50 per 100g. I envy the staff their patience. It's not easy making a decision with the variety. I suggest eating in and taking a few choices home for later, (If they make it that far). read more

Lovely cosy place, I came after dinner so couldn't order an entire Kurtosh. Instead I had a cheesecake slice and an inhale/exhale tea. The cheesecake is light, not too sweet, not too rich yet so creamy and delicious. Loved it with the tea which had a citrus hint and lemony goodness. Staff were friendly and lovely too. Lotsa space in this cafe and the tables were not too close together so you can have your own private space. Perfect for an evening treat or any other day I'm sure :) all this for 8 bucks too. This place is a cult. Everyone who works here has this really similar happy look on their face. You start eating the samples they have out on the counter and suddenly you're feeling quite happy too. You start talking about getting maybe just a coffee and something small for takeaway. Then all the sudden you realise that you've just blacked out and ordered way too many baked good for the entire office. Then you're back the very next day, doing it all again. Seriously though, get the Kürtösh, and always have it fresh baked. It's wonderful. The iced coffee was nice too, although quite sweet. While it smells heavenly and is an adorable, inviting venue that creates the desire to have tea & dessert, when you actually sit down and chow down it's a little disappointing. Pay by the weight of the slice rather than the arbitrary size of a slice- interesting model. Had a slice of the carrot cake and the staff member's favorite walnut & cinnamon tea cake, and I was surprised at how dry the cake was. Another time we got their self-named Nutella kurtosh and pistachio kurtosh. It was nice, but not amazing. Service is pretty subpar in general- slow, unthoughtful, forgetful. One big up was the many free samples. Out of 6 samples, however, I was unimpressed and was better able to further understand what not to pick. read more

I popped in for a coffee and a spinach and cheese bureka. Kurtosh has a very relaxing atmosphere and is tastefully decked out. A lovely bakery. The one thing lacking was that there was no wifi. The coffee was decent and the bureka was good. They served it warmed on a plate, it had a crumbly texture and the sesame seeds added a lovely toasted seed flavour. I'm a big fan of Kurtosh and cannot resist popping in for a coffee (and lots of cake samples) whenever I walk by one. The cakes are delicious, moist and full of flavour. The carrot cake is super light, fluffy and has wonderful flavour- it is also gluten & dairy free. The cheesecakes are also delicious and the actual Kurtosh pastries are definitely worth a try too!
