Black Star was a recommended place to visit in Sydney, particularly for the raspberry lychee cake. The accompanying picture of said cake got me interested, so I stopped by Black Star on a recent visit to Australia. Ordering was mostly easy tho I got more than just the raspberry lychee cake. As soon as I laid eyes on the strawberry watermelon cake, I knew I had to have it. Payment was easy, but be advised, these cakes aren't cheap, nor large. I took the cute little Black Star bag and sat down nearby to eat. Even the box the cakes come in is adorable. Both cakes were quite good but I preferred the strawberry watermelon one. Something about that watermelon texture was extra special. Definitely recommend.
Home to the 'most instagrammed' strawberry watermelon cake - it's definitely a unique treat worth trying at least once. The soft, fresh slice of watermelon layered with cream, almond dacquoise, and rose petals creates a surprisingly harmonious flavor combination - it's light, refreshing and visually stunning. While I enjoyed the delicate balance of flavors, it's probably not something I would order again. It feels more like a must-try experience than a dessert I would regularly crave. They do offer a wide assortment of cakes that I wanted to try next time I am back.
As you already know, Blackstar pastry is all over the socials. We opted to try it and we're unsure what to expect. This location is in a busy shopping arcade off of George Street. It is more of a walk up and take away as opposed to an actual dine in bakery, which we did not know. of course, we had to try the watermelon cake and we ordered a iced strawberry Matcha. Service was very helpful because we were so undecided on which cake to order. Once we placed the order, we stood off to the side and waited for our well presented boxed cake, which was placed in a small bag. There are some seats about 10 feet away designated for this bakery and also some seating upstairs for this bakery, but it does not have its own stand alone restaurant/bakery interior. I personally did not enjoy the cake. I thought it was a little dry and had a very floral taste. Possibly from the rose water. my daughter loved it. She said it was one of the best cake she's ever had in her life. The strawberry Matcha was well balanced with sweetness and Matcha flavor. Overall, the visit was very good. If we come back, we would probably try the mango Yuzu cake. Very Instagram worthy.
While searching for must eats in Sydney, I came across Black Star Pastry - home of the original Strawberry Watermelon Cake; also known as the "the world's most Instagrammed cake." The popular bakery sells 20,000 slices of its photogenic cake a week through its four locations. During our trip, we visited their location that is within a bookstore in Sydney's bustling Central Business District. I admit, I got a slice for the gram and was very pleasantly surprised that it was every bit delicious as it was beautiful. The watermelon slice is refreshing and with its crunchy texture pairs nicely with the rose cream and cake. My son had some as well as he devoured his ninja gingerbread cookie in seconds. We enjoyed our sweet snack and would definitely recommend a visit to this bakery.
We have been wanting the "Star" cake for a few years and it was everything I had expected. We picked this location(not the original) because it was in the Central Business District. It is located in a mall type setting almost within a bookstore. There was a small line when we arrived but it moved quickly. There is was the "beauty" ... Strawberry Watermelon Cake. And yes it has a slice of watermelon as one of its layers. Beyond my imagination and it really does work. 5 - for taste and beauty 5 - cost $9AUDs($6 US) 5 - pleasant staff 3 - lack of seating....seats about 12 and have to get on a wait list to stand inside bakery to eat. Would definitely go back. Highly recommend.
This pastry shop popped up on multiple searches of places to eat in Sydney. Apparently their claim to fame is their strawberry watermelon cake (pictured), so I set out to check for myself. After trying this cake, I realized I want fresh watermelon in every pastry I ever eat from now on. It compliments the rest of the cake perfectly, adding a light crunch and lots of juiciness to each bite. The rest of the cake is delicious, too! The rose, the cream, and the shortbread are all sweet in a way that's mouthwatering without making you feel like you just ate a stick of butter with a side of oil. I definitely recommend this cake, and understand why it's so popular. This location is on Floor 2 of a shopping center, sharing a space with a bookstore. As a result, seating is very limited, and you can only do takeaway after 5:30pm. There's open seeing on the ground level of the same shopping center, but it does take away from the charm a bit, having to compete for space like that.
If I can, I would rate Black Star as 4 1/2 stars. My wife's friend recommended the watermelon cake here, so we decided to stop by and try it. This shop is located in the Japanese bookstore of the mall, so it isn't very big. They do have a few tables where you can enjoy your pastries or drinks, though. As for the watermelon cake, it is really good. As with most Asian desserts, it isn't overly sweet, which I prefer. It consists of layers of cake, cream, and watermelon, with strawberries on top. The cake is nice and light, and is a great way to end a meal. We ended up coming here twice for the watermelon cake (also tried the pistachio lemon cake: while good, definitely not the same as the watermelon), so I would definitely come again when in Sydney.
So we are here being the tourists trying the famous watermelon cake. The taste was yum and very refreshing given the generous amount of the cream. It feels very light and doesn't make you feel too guilty with the calories. We also try the custard flan? It was very good too and not too sweet. We then also decided to try the orange cake which was a bit disappointing. The flavor was good but has a quite bitter aftertaste. We each took a bite and just couldn't finish it. The store occupies a little section of the bookstore and seating area is very cramped. So you might want to come eat first before going shopping.
It might be overrated & cliche for some, but it was my first time trying the infamous watermelon cake at Black Star Pastry, & it's seriously my new favourite! Its refreshing and not too sweet. A play on textures too. You'll be a fan too if you love watermelon & appreciate cakes that aren't too rich. It's one of those things you have to try for yourself! I will say it is a bit hard to eat (maintaining the structure of the cake), but it's so beautifully presented. It becomes a beautiful mess lol. This Black Star Pastry cafe was a great hidden little find in the Jap bookstore in Sydney CBD. It has its own section in the store with a substantial seating area. I would come here all the time to have great coffee and cake while enjoying reading great books, it's perfect.
Dude, it is all that!! My GF found this place on a rainy day and simply judging from the location I didn't think it was going to be all that. Being in a book store how good could it be? Their flagship pastry deserves all the praise. Hopefully they can open a shop in my town. One can always dream.
I'm a foodie, NOT a shopper! After walking around Sydney's CBD, we visited the famous Queen Victoria Building, a late 19th-century Romanesque Revival marketplace that is now a shopping mall filled with high-end boutiques and eateries. We crossed George Street to The Strand, where we were in search of the world-famous patisserie, Black Star Pastry. Although I don't use IG or FB, I heard about Black Star Pastry's Strawberry Watermelon Cake while reading an old New York Times article about this Australian patisserie, which declared this signature cake and most-requested cake as "The World's Most Instagrammed Cake." So, I made Black Star Pastry a destination during our pre-cruise stay in Sydney. We followed the directions posted on The Strand's directory to Black Star Pastry and ogled the artistically and attractively decorated cakes while zeroing in on the Strawberry Watermelon cake slices lined up next to the Raspberry Lychee and Mango Yuzu cake slices. Honestly, all of the cake slices looked lusciously delicious, but our taste buds were craving a refreshing slice of Strawberry Watermelon. We selected the cake slice, and the amicable countergirl neatly packaged it and asked if we needed eating utensils. Of course, we needed and wanted eating utensils as we dreamed about digging into the cake at their dining counter right away. My husband rushed me to finish taking photos, and he jabbed his fork into the tender yet juicy cake. Before I knew it, he unassembled the cake slice to reveal a fresh-cut slice of juicy, ripe, and sweet watermelon, light rose-scented cream, tender cake, and was topped with fragrant rose petals and fresh strawberries. He claimed it would be easier to eat because the cake slice was about 3" high and looked like it would've toppled when pierced from top to bottom. Yeah, it was HIS "thing" about eating this cake, I decided to take a bit of the top layer, then a small slice of the watermelon bottom layer together. It truly was refreshing, light, and not overly sugary. The lightness and flavors of this cake seemed like it might have been low-cal, but even if it wasn't, who cares when you're on vacation?! read more
If you could only get one thing, get the Strawberry Watermelon Cake. The location was a bit hard to find, or maybe it was only hard for me to find. I passed by the bakery without even noticing because there was no line when I arrived. Black Star Pastry is located across from The Body Shop on the Ground Floor at the mall entrance on Pitt Street. The cakes are a bit expensive, but the presentation is beautiful and the quality is worth it once in a while. The watermelon cake was refreshing, sweet, fragrant, and floral. The bottom layer had an almond cookie base which was chewy and delicate. A close tie for second was the Mango Yuzu with coconut cream and Raspberry Lychee Cake with fresh lychee. I recommend taking the desserts to go and sitting inside the Food Court of the mall. read more

The strawberry watermelon cake is amazingly delicious and it's not very sweet and it's light and refreshing. I love this cake. Can't get it anywhere else. Good customer service and quick service due to always a line at this place. read more

I visited this pastry shop years ago while on vacation and tried their "must eat" strawberry watermelon cake. The taste I can still remember from all those years ago but this review is based on a recent re-visit and as much as I wanted to eat the same cake again, I know I should try something new so I did! The seating setup hasn't changed one bit but they're so much more organized. For those who would like to eat-in but no seating are available (such as myself), they took my order and asked me to stand just outside within the bookstore to wait. When a seat freed up, they called my name and set my cake in front of me almost right away. My order of tea follow shortly. Now the cake, I went with the pistachio lemon zen cake and genmaicha tea. I really wanted coffee but the tea paired so well with the cake. I never knew lemon and pistachio go so well together until now. There at crunchy bits from the pistachio, more than one layer of lemon cream, one layer of chewy cake that reminds me of a macaron and a few more layers that I can't describe exactly but it's all yummy. And at the very bottom of the cake, there is a thin spread of dark chocolate and honey. I am amazed that they're not a "one hit wonder" type of store. You can tell whoever is behind these cakes are super creative and knowledgeable of flavors and textures. Happy to learn that it is still on the top of my list of must eat in Sydney! read more

I came here two days in a row. The first day, my friend brought me here to try the watermelon cake; it was only 5:30pm, but they had sold out already! So I came back the next day after lunch to try it. There were a lot of cakes in the fridge-- they must know that this is the most popular one! I've never had a whole layer of watermelon in my cake before, and it was delicious! The cake was light and not overly sweet; the watermelon made it very refreshing and the strawberries and rose petals on top added to the flavor. The shop is very small, inside the Kinokuniya bookstore, and it is very cute as well. There is limited seating, but luckily people come and go pretty quickly. If you're looking for some good dessert, definitely try this unique cake! read more

This small location was so busy! They don't have too much seating so if you got one then consider yourself lucky. It felt a little packed being in a novelty store as well.. Regardless .. The watermelon cake was heaven. The cake was super light with the rose flavoured custard between the watermelon pieces. One piece is definitely not enough for one person lol! I could've eaten 5. You didn't feel heavy after it like normal cakes. I shall order a whole cake next time! I've always missed the Newtown one so its nice to see a location in the CBD. Worth the visit! Just be prepared with the line ups and no seating! read more

As you eat the cake, you feel a sense of smooth creamy texture throughout and then the sweet crunch of the watermelon, along with the rose-scent throughout each bite. It really does remind you of a nice picnic in a garden and as you eat some watermelon, you can't help but be lifted by the fragrant of roses surrounding you. It is hard to explain the number of thoughts which went through my mind as I was eating this, but all I knew was a deeply satisfied feeling and the yearning for more. This is the best combo! The famous watermelon cake with other amazing deserts too, coffee and Kinokuniya Bookstore! Free up and afternoon, or some chill time after work because you could spend hours here! Exploring Kinokuniya alone you could be there forever sooooo much cool stuff to check out. My cousin took me to this coffee shop while I was visiting Sydney. This is a small coffee shop located at a mall inside a bookstore. Fun environment, friendly staff and great presentation for the food. Due to the small sitting area and the number of customers, there was a bit of a wait. We ordered green tea and the strawberry and watermelon cake. The tea was nice and soothing. The cake was light, fresh and perfect for an afternoon snack. The cake's ingredients include watermelon, strawberry, pistachio, roses, etc. that make it unique and fresh. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend this place. I can't wait to come back and try the other desserts. read more

I had no idea watermelon inside a cake could taste so good!!! The cake looks beautiful with the petals. It was fresh and it wasn't overly sweet. Come early because they'll be gone quick! There aren't many seats so I wouldn't recommend coming in a group. How I wish I could fly to Sydney just to eat this cake again.... read more

I had lychee and raspberry cake. Taste nice. Chiffon cake lemon. Very traditional. Taste like sponge cake. Not much cream on top. Not too sweet. Good choice! Worth a try. The strawberry and watermelon cake is really popular. When I stopped the store in the afternoon. It already sold out... leave it next time read more

I give them 4 stars for the cakes only. And they scrape in given the dull fitout and difficulty of finding a seat... Love their vegan brownie with salted caramel popcorn, the strawberry watermelon cake delivers in terms of visual appeal but is less exciting taste wise. read more
Cake, coffee, books...I'm pretty glad that there's a nice place to sit down (if you can get a seat that is) in Kinokuniya. Dymocks on George Street has their dodgy cafe but this is so much better because who doesn't love cake? It's a pretty busy place 98% of the time. I've never been when there isn't a cue and good luck finding somewhere to sit. I give it 4 stars based on quality of the cake! read more
My friend and I came here because we heard amazing things about their desserts. I got their mini vegan donut, which was just the right amount of sweetness. It's a cake donut, and it was moist with the right amount of chocolate on top. The cacao nibs also offer a nice bitterness that isn't overwhelming. Obviously most people come here for their watermelon cake, which also tasted quite nice. I would definitely give some of their other items a try if I ever get the chance! They also seem to have plenty of area to sit down. read more

The cakes at Blackstar is always good and this outlet in the CBD is convenient. Located at the entrance of the awesome Kinokunya book shop, this tiny shop gets so busy. So get in early if there are specific things you are after. The raspberry chocolate cake used to be a special here but now available at all stores. Favourite is still the pistachio & strawberry watermelon cakes. Vegan popcorn brownie was a surprise as was the custard tart. The black sesame chiffon is disappointing - love the texture but no black sesame flavour, just sweet. read more
