In need of a treat whilst walking around downtown Sydney? Uncle Tetsu's has what you need! Pleasant friendly staff and reasonable prices. A small piece of Japanese cheesecake, some whipped cream all wrapped in a crepe...recipe for deliciousness! 5/5 After perusing their menu, they had many other items we wanted to try so will have to pop back in tomorrow and try the Japanese cheesecake and pudding. Uncle Tetsu, where have you been my whole life?!?

I've always wanted to jiggle a Japanese cheesecake and I finally got my chance in Sydney! This location is inside a food court like mall on the corner of George and Bathhurst. The directory says you'll find this place on the 10th floor. What they mean is actually street level. I ordered the original Japanese cheesecake and one choco tart. The cheesecake lived up to the jiggliness I expected! The texture was airy and cloud like. The flavor was not what I expected - slightly tart and not as sweet as I had hoped. The choco tart was a much better option! It was essentially a tiny chocolate flavored cheesecake in a mini pie shell. Great flavor and crispy crust. Overall super fun food to play with. Taste was not bad but not excellent.

The cheesecake is light but also cheesey enough. Baked fresh everyday at the bakery. They now have a second bakery in the same complex which serves the same but matcha flavoured. The cheese tarts are divinely delicious almost like egg tarts.

I've never had a Japanese cheesecake before and we save Uncle Tetsu's while walking around downtown Sydney and my cousin got super excited. We promised we'd come back around after dinner for some dessert, which we did. We couldn't get anything but the Original Cheesecake, but sadly it comes only as a whole cake. We ended up sharing between 3 people, and the cake was a good size cause it goes down so easily. The cheesecake is light and fluffy, not as heavy as the NY style cheesecakes and is a mix between a sponge cake and a cheese custard. I didn't taste a lot of cheese in this cake, but a lightly sweetened fluffy cake/not yet a sponge. I can't describe the consistency but it's airy and light and softly creamy and delicious! We thought we'd each have a slice cause we were full but we kept eating at it and all of a sudden, half the cake was magically gone! We all agreed there wasn't anything particularly special about the cake, but it was good! And we all also agreed that we wouldn't go out of our way to get the cake, but would get it again! Overall, I'd say we were all fans and it was a good purchase, at least to try even once! If I had a friend who didn't like overly sweet and heavy desserts, this would make the most perfect cake!

YUM. DRIPPING GOODNESS. def recommend the original tart. It's warm, it's crunchy, it's gooey. fyi- the lines here get kinda crazy. I recommend going at awkward times of the day, or if anything lines go pretty fast. Asians got that flick of the wrist.

Cheeeessseeeeeee. Uncle Tetsu's is ridiculously tasty. There are several locations around Sydney but this one is the best. You can order from outside the street, or inside the market area. They offer a variety of desserts but they are famously known for their cheesecake, which I've yet to try. You cannot purchase a slice of cheesecake, so it's all or nothing. A small cake will run about $15, which is totally worth it, i'm just waiting for the right event to buy it for. I have had their cheese tarts, which are literally to die for, literally. If you get lucky and buy one that's freshly baked its straight perfection. I went with the original cheese tart and the taro tart. The original cheese tart is sweet yet cheesy, it's very distinct, and very delicious. I've never had a dessert like these cheese tarts before. Each tart will run you about $4.5 but totally worth it. You can tell a lot of time and effort go into making these little pieces of heaven. They have package deals you can purchase. If I could, I would start and end every day with one of these cheese tarts. Highly recommended. Get on over to Uncle Tetsu's for some cheesecake and cheese tarts. They also have some other delicious baked goods that I would love to try.

Walked by Tetsu a few times during the opening week, but the queue was massive so decided for the hype to die down a little. Finally committed to the queue on a rainy day, so the queue was a little shorter. Waited around 15 mins, but time flew by as it was pretty entertaining to watch the chefs inside prepare the cakes. The price had upped from $15 to $18 for the Original Tetsu Cheesecake, cash only and limited to 1 per person. The cake was still warm and fressshhh af when i got it, so decided its best to demolish this little wobbly cake asap. It was very soft and airy, so its possible to eat the entire cake alone without feeling full. Its not too sweet as well, which makes the cake feel somewhat "healthy" to consume alone and doesn't make you feel guilty :) It's pretty good. (but i think the crazy hype makes it seem like a 12/10, but its more like a 9/10)

Some hype and some truth to the madness. The cakes are good but they not out of this world like many are proclaiming. The lines have somewhat died down, usually less than 10 min wait now. They're baked fresh and I would say they are about average to a little above average compared to the loads of cheese cakes I've had across Japan. The madeleines are interesting, especially the more exotic earl grey and green tea flavors but I've found the quality to be very inconsistent. Some days they soft and chewy and others they're dry as can be. The real MVP here is their cheese tarts, which are best when they're fresh out the oven.

My expectation was too high because every day there was long queue since opening day. Taste good but cost performance is not that good. I will not become a repeater. If you go to Japan, we have so many nice cheesecake shops with much better cost performance, however, considering this is Australia, I will give 3 out of 5.

I finally decided the queue was not too bad (i.e. 15min wait) and decided to join the Uncle Tetsu hype that has taken over Sydney. A highlight was being able to see the chefs at work. As for my $18 cheesecake, I must admit I thought it was average when I had it while it was piping hot. Extremely soft, spongey, just how I like it, but the cheese flavour was a little weird. After putting it in the fridge overnight and microwaving it, the cheese flavours had settled and it was really yummy! I'm so glad we have our very own fresh Japanese cheesecake store in Sydney. Will be returning for sure.

I was excited to try this because everyone compared this to PABLO Cheese Tarts. Well, this don't even compare. Not idea how the comparison even came about. It's light and fluffy, but after refrigeration it becomes oddly dense. I'm glad I only waited 15 minutes for this cake instead of the crazy hour long lines people were talking about. There's also a limit of 1 per person...and it's $18 for the cake - up from $15. They must be raking it in big time. I might go back to try other cheesecakes whenever they become available...but definitely wouldn't go in if there was a line. Long live PABLO!

Cheesecake: $18.00

Good things come to those who wait, and if you're willing to wait through what may well be a lengthy line at Uncle Tetsu's you're to be rewarded with a truly excellent and unique cheesecake. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? I'd heard that Uncle Tetsu's over in Toronto was generating some seriously long lines, and that's certainly the case here in Sydney. Having said that, the lines are managed well, and it's made clear that it's only one cheesecake per person and it's cash only. Once you get to the counter, you're on your way with a nicely wrapped cheesecake in hand. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $18.00 isn't cheap for a relatively small cheesecake that can be shared between probably two people, but with a commodity this hot I'm honestly surprised that they don't charge more. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Historically I've 'liked' cheesecake, but I haven't 'loved' cheesecake. I've had good and bad, but nothing as unique as this. First and foremost, the consistency is fluffy and light almost like one of those Easter peeps, but that's deceiving, because once you bite into one of these bad boys it really is as though you've bitten into the smoothest cheesecake you've ever had. To top it all off, the flavor is fantastic, and I'm sure I'm not the first to say that this should probably be the benchmark for cheesecake just about anywhere. Dual Stars Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Uncle Tetsu's really is phenomenal, but given they only have a single option, the lines can easily exceed 30 minutes, and the price point is a tad bit high, I can't say it's my new standard for desserts in Sydney. No Star Granted.

Disappointed that its a little small :(

A slice of heaven, it transported me back to my osaka trip immediately. So light, so fluffy and so yum The wait was mayhem but wasnt too bad. 9 mins :) A little expensive ($18) for a small cake but for now, its worth it !

I've had this place bookmarked for years. Maybe I'll try their dessert tasting menu someday, but…read morejust the regular desserts I tried were nothing spectacular. And on a late weekday afternoon, they were sold out of the drinks that caught my eye. The desserts are fine, but some of the prices are so expensive that I don't feel like I'd miss out on much if I didn't get them. The average price seemed to be $28 for a dessert smaller than the size of my palm. While some of the flavors were more unique, based on the ones I tried, they weren't actually good combinations or just blended together so that you might as well be eating one flavor.

I had hope to visit Koi during my last visit to Sydney, but I ran out of time. But for my most…read morerecent visit, it happened to be beside my hotel. After eating dinner somewhere else, my friend and I stopped at Koi for dessert. We go there only 30 min before close, so there weren't a lot of desserts left. We tried two of them - a pandan cake and a mango dessert. They were both beautiful looking, but don't recall being blown away by the taste. And it was very expensive. I thought to myself that it was not what I hoped. But I'll give the benefit of the doubt that maybe at the end of the night all they have the less popular desserts left. Next time I'm there, I'll give it another shot.

I'm a foodie, NOT a shopper!…read more After walking around Sydney's CBD, we visited the famous Queen Victoria Building, a late 19th-century Romanesque Revival marketplace that is now a shopping mall filled with high-end boutiques and eateries. We crossed George Street to The Strand, where we were in search of the world-famous patisserie, Black Star Pastry. Although I don't use IG or FB, I heard about Black Star Pastry's Strawberry Watermelon Cake while reading an old New York Times article about this Australian patisserie, which declared this signature cake and most-requested cake as "The World's Most Instagrammed Cake." So, I made Black Star Pastry a destination during our pre-cruise stay in Sydney. We followed the directions posted on The Strand's directory to Black Star Pastry and ogled the artistically and attractively decorated cakes while zeroing in on the Strawberry Watermelon cake slices lined up next to the Raspberry Lychee and Mango Yuzu cake slices. Honestly, all of the cake slices looked lusciously delicious, but our taste buds were craving a refreshing slice of Strawberry Watermelon. We selected the cake slice, and the amicable countergirl neatly packaged it and asked if we needed eating utensils. Of course, we needed and wanted eating utensils as we dreamed about digging into the cake at their dining counter right away. My husband rushed me to finish taking photos, and he jabbed his fork into the tender yet juicy cake. Before I knew it, he unassembled the cake slice to reveal a fresh-cut slice of juicy, ripe, and sweet watermelon, light rose-scented cream, tender cake, and was topped with fragrant rose petals and fresh strawberries. He claimed it would be easier to eat because the cake slice was about 3" high and looked like it would've toppled when pierced from top to bottom. Yeah, it was HIS "thing" about eating this cake, I decided to take a bit of the top layer, then a small slice of the watermelon bottom layer together. It truly was refreshing, light, and not overly sugary. The lightness and flavors of this cake seemed like it might have been low-cal, but even if it wasn't, who cares when you're on vacation?!
