My regular barber was temporarily out, so off I went in search of another barbershop. I headed for downtown Bend, since that's where there are numerous shops. Some are fancy (and pricey), but I found L&K Barbershop, with a sign saying "haircut - $22". So I figured this was no "clip joint", pun intended...Knowing most shops were appoint-only, I asked if anyone had an opening. A big burly guy with a Scottish flag sewn on his back said "sure, I'll take you. One pleasant conversation, and one nice haircut later, I was a new man. The small and quaint shop was old school, the barbers friendly and talented, and the prices, very reasonable. They don't take credit cards, which surprised me, but though I only had $21 in cash on me, he kindly took it and said "have a nice day". I'll be back. In fact, I might switch barbers. I've only had two barbers in 42 years, so this would be a big deal for me. But, a good, friendly barber, at a reasonable price is a tempting combination. read more

I've been getting my haircut here, off and on, since 1998. Went thru a cost saving phase of having my wife buzz the mop every three weeks but I'm happy to report that I am now back to seeing Tracy on a regular basis. My boss and several of my coworkers and friends also get their haircut here. This is a good old fashioned barbershop, but it's not the place you'll find a stack of Playboys or other "men's magazines" either out front or hidden under some towels in the back room. When I say "old fashioned", I really mean traditional. Hometown. Downtown. From the barber pole out front to the row of chairs for waiting patrons on one wall facing the row of barber chairs on the opposite wall. Mirrors on both walls. Carpet under the "waiting chairs", linoleum tile around the barber chairs. Coat rack. Historical knick-knacks (a collection of belt buckles) adorn the walls. TV up in one corner, sometimes on, sometimes off. More often it's off to allow friendly conversation. People talk in here. Whether it's the barbers bantering back and forth or the regulars joining in. It's rarely silent. Be it the latest joke, predictions about the weather or sharing about family and what's happening with the kids. Most of the gals in there...Claudia (the owner) Debbie, and Tracy...have been around since before I came along and have years of experience. It's like family. In fact, this might be the one break from "traditional" in the barbershop sense of things. Majority of the barbers ARE gals and not men. The three listed above being the ones with the most tenure. I've seen several "newbies" come and go. L&K being a preferred shop for newly minted barbers to cut their teeth in the real world. But Claudia, Debbie and Tracy still remain. Year after year. Yes, they take appointments and walk ins. However, they have a loyal customer base, so I recommend making an appointment. I have seen walk ins advised of a long wait on occasion. Typically, the newer barbers handle the walk ins while Claudia, Debbie and Tracy have most of the appointments. That isn't ALWAYS the case, but it's more common than not. I like that they still use a straight razor to shave my neck and around my ears and sideburns. They also trim eyebrows and ear hair. In other words, they do a first rate job. When it's all over, they do a quick "electric massage" across the neck and shoulders that you wish would never end. It's a nice touch. The shop is open six days a week. Mon thru Sat (closing early on Saturday). During the week, I believe they take their last appointment at 5:30, with plans of being buttoned up by 6pm. Still, I'd call ahead to be sure. Parking can be an issue. This is downtown. Consider it a major coup if you score a space right in front of the shop. It's not uncommon to make several laps around Oregon, Wall, Minnesota and Bond looking for an available space....especially if you are anywhere near the five o'clock hour. Best to take the first available and walk the half block or so, if necessary. I don't really know all the prices but I always leave home with a twenty spot. I think mine is a $17 haircut and I always tip Tracy $3. read more

Needed a better haircut than the usual Great Clip haircut that after several weeks your hair grows out uneven.If you call for an appointment ask for Tracy. Very professional about her cutting. You will get a great cut, a little shave of the back of your neck and ears, and a hand held mini message around your shoulders. Small talk is always fun to hear .
