Harvest Moon Timber Frame - Post and beam horse barns with genuine mortise & tenon joinery stand up to hard daily use and last for generations

I built a timber frame barn using Harvest Moon about 3.5 years ago. My intention was long term…read moreplanning for retirement. We needed more space, and it would provide a way to get me out of my wife's hair. Little did I expect a pandemic, and a year plus worth of quarantine. What a God send! Easily one of the best investments we have made. After 3 years, there are still things I tinker with. Some maintenance, other things adding to the function. The upstairs room is awesome. While you can see it on drawings, it is another thing to see it in reality. I actively participated as the general contractor, and while raising the timber, as part of the crew. I hired a local contractor to do the majority of the work, and also hired a supervisor from Harvest Moon (a sub to them actually) for about 3 days to get us started. I have a 24x36 summer barn, with a few additions. A porch and a shed dormer on the back. The timber was raised in about 3 days. "Finishing" the barn took the rest of the summer. There was a lot of wood left over. Harvest Moon gives you plenty with the package. I bought supplemental 4x4 for wall framing from a local mill as I departed from the kit intent with a design that was more complicated, but cool looking. But had enough timber / lumber left over to make 2 of 3 doors, a bar, a work bench and a timber frame mail box post...and there is still a bunch out there. I would very much recommend using plywood sheeting on the walls to give the structure torsional strength, or change the braces from screwed in, to mortise and tenon joints. This regardless of what the code or engineer in your area says. The screwed in braces don't give you much strength. I didn't like the look of the plywood, but it does provide lots of strength, and it grows on you over time...actually you just don't see it after a while. I would also recommend giving lots of thought and preplanning to insulation, which i did not. I heat the barn with a wood stove, which is perfect for the ground floor even on cold windy days (about 20F or so), but the upstairs stays pretty chilly with no insulation. Even if you don't plan on insulating right away - make allowances for it. These would be much easier done in construction than after the fact. Getting the permits done was the hardest part of the project. Township officials don't really know how to deal with non-standard construction, and rely heavily on a professional engineering stamp. Once all that was sorted, the actually raising, was a lot of fun. Met some cool people from the blacksmith who made my strap hinges, to the mason, to the guy who sells reclaimed cobble stone. Harvest Moon was a great source of information and help all the way through, and even now - 3+ years later when I have the occasional question. Great value for the quality and service you get. Still amazed at the construction tolerances and how it went together. There has been the expected wood checking and some minor racking over the years, but all normal when using living organisms as building material.

Couldn't have been happier with the entire experience. I searched all over the country to find someone to make and sell me the timbers without the rest of the building products and Jim was the only one that agreed. The quality of the timbers is great. If you want to see pictures go to Frannysfarm.com and click on the lodging page. Highly recommend Harvest Moon Timber Frame. I will almost certainly buy another kit from them for a future build. Thanks, Jeff

RLC is a one stop shop for your construction needs; interior, exterior, residential, commercial, etc. Rudy's can do attitude and his customer 1st approach is difficult to find in today's market place. We had them replace the ripped porch screens, power wash railings, roof, and the entire exterior of the house, as well as clean the gutters. They also replaced our old lousy gutter guards. Rudy did several walk arounds with me during the project to show me the progress and point out areas of concern, such as places where there were gaps in the existing deck trim that had caused water damage under the fascia. They were able to replace all of the rotting boards and added new trim to cover the gaps, which we hadn't planned on, but it made the deck much more sound and looks great, even better than before! He also pointed out that a number of our other old window screens around the house were frayed or torn, and offered to replace them while they were there, at a very fair price. The entire deck/porch looks new again. His team took care to carefully clean up the work site before they left. This is a family business, and they were consistently kind and very responsive. We will definitely use them again for future projects.

It was close to closing time when I called but decided to give it a shot as I needed a door installed ASAP. To my surprise, Dorian answered the phone. I let him know what I needed and he even came that same night after hours to do a consultation. Once he assessed, and understood the urgency he sent a quote that night, and made an appt that same week to install the door/door frame. He sent me all my options and picked everything up at Home Depot for me so I didn't have to move a finger. Dorian answered texts promptly, was very careful with his work, and kept me updated throughout the day on progress/issues he found when installing my door. While he was working he listened to my needs and customized the door to what I needed. At the end of the job he even offered to fix some messed up door locks in the house that my sister mentioned weren't working properly, free of charge. Everything was a seamless process from start to finish. You can tell Dorian takes pride in his work and it shows. I would highly recommend Dorian and the Handyman team for your needs. Now I have a handyman that I will only be using in Fairfield CT.

It worries us to think that corners were cut on other parts of the job and that we will have new and potentially more damaging shortcuts surface in the future... We have reached out to Mr. Pescatore and have not heard back from him or his company... Now we have to hire someone else to redo the vents properly...

Buyer beware don't give him any money unless the job is complete!
