Everything that was ordered at our table was just as good an any of the hundreds of places I've eaten in the Houston area, San Antonio, other regions in south Texas, and beyond. Their queso fundido was prepared differently from anything I've had elsewhere, to include sautéed onions and pepper, but I'm now a fan of El Patio's presentation. The only negative was that it was served with no flour tortillas, we had to ask for them separately. Any good queso fundido is served with warm flour tortillas. So do yourself a favor and order the queso fundido and ask for the tortillas to eat it with. All of the other dishes ordered by everyone in our party of five was delicious and fresh, from the beef street tacos, to the pollo San Jose, to their chili verde, all wonderful. I already know this will be a family tradition every time we come back to visit.

No margaritas, but a big glass of unsweetened iced tea was in order. A hot basket of chips and a small carafe of salsa was dropped off at our table. The salsa was good, but too mild for our tastes. The tortilla chips were very good. I decided on the #1 Lunch Special which included a Chille Relleno and a crispy beef taco. Both platters were accompanied with refried beans and rice. Wow, what a quick turnaround from the kitchen! Victor was back in a flash with our lunch entrees. Both of our lunch entrees were very enjoyable and spiced nicely. Now that cell towers have been installed within an acceptable radius of Center, YELP can help us find spots like this. Wiht the drive thru open, I figured that was the way to order. The lady taking my order got everything to me quick so I could get back to the hotel and gobble everything down. Being on an empty stomach, I did an order of breakfast tacos (Huevos con chorizo, Papas con chorizo), a bistec Sope, traditional tacos (pastor, barbocoa, tripas), and a Pambazo which is similar to a torta but with melted cheese, using the bistec. Everything was freaking delicious. The Pambazo was larger than I expected, messy, and delicious with the charred bread, lettuce, and queso fresco stuffed inside with the bistec. The tacos (breakfast and traditional) and sope had grease, tortilla softness, and savory flavors from the bites. Price-wise, all ordered were a little over $20 which is a steal these days. No doubt I'm here again for Taco Tuesdays or any day when I'm in Center. Seems the citizens of the area cherish this spot and for good reason!

That decision paid off when we ended up at El Patio in Zwolle. The restaurant was a nice surprise. The decor had a festive Mexican feel with colorful streamers, flags, and bright colors. Everything was neatly painted, clean, and cool, which was a welcome retreat from the oppressive summer heat outside. We arrived in the early afternoon, so we missed whatever lunch crowd might have been there. The first thing they bring out is a basket of hot tortilla chips. They were fresh and tasted like they had just come out of the fryer. They offer guacamole and other extras, but don't overlook the homemade salsa. It's cooked, served chilled, not too spicy, and not overloaded with cilantro. Really good. The pineapple margaritas were another highlight. They came in heavy crockery mugs that kept them ice cold. They were so good we bought a pair of the mugs to take home as souvenirs from our little road trip. The funny thing is, after the hour drive home, those mugs were still cool to the touch. They really hold the cold. We both ordered the Speedy Gonzalez. The enchilada came covered in a rich mole-based chili sauce, and the plate included a hard-shell taco plus your choice of rice or beans. We chose both. The refried beans were flavorful, the Spanish rice was light and fluffy, and the taco was excellent. The beef was just a little salty for our taste, but the Monterey Jack cheese was a nice touch and everything came together well. We finished with sopapillas, which came out hot, covered with cinnamon and sugar, with honey on the side. They were delicious. Our only disappointment? No coffee. Those warm sopapillas were begging for a cup of coffee afterward. That's a small complaint, though. Great service, great chips, homemade salsa, excellent margaritas, good food, and even a souvenir to remember the trip by. El Patio turned an unexpected change of plans into a very enjoyable afternoon.
