Very odd ambience for a grocery store. All the shelves are packed with stuff but everything is…read moreclearly just thrown in there. There are random carts littered throughout with random items sold for shockingly low prices. As many other people have mentioned, there is a metric fuck ton of dried fish in the back. It doesn't smell as strongly as the rest of the comments say it does though haha The meat was pretty shit though and the avocados we bought sucked

Yes, it's grungy in there, and smells weird, and is full of salty people, but I was able to get bags of groceries that fed me for an entire week for about $10. Admittedly that was a while ago, and I was a vegetarian back then, and I weighed less than 100 lbs, but hey I lived to tell this story. I was back at Segal's this past week, for a stroll down memory lane, and with the exception of some new security cameras and TV screens, it's exactly how I remembered it. It's still poorly lit. The refrigerated sections still have those yellowing plastic curtains. The floors are still dirty and it still smelled weird. Prices are a bit higher, but I would say keeping with inflation. They stock a few more organic items now. The bulk items used to just be in open tubs (like at Bulk Barn, minus the coverings), but are now in plastic garbage/recycling bins, with lids, lol. The "scoops" are plastic water jugs that are tied to the bins. Most are cracked or broken. I found this amusing. This place has apparently been around since 1927. Maybe it's just nostalgia speaking, but I have a soft spot in my heart for its "this is who I am, warts and all, take it or leave it" attitude.

I would generally show up on the weekend in the late morning or early afternoon. During lobster season, the price of their lobsters are sometimes a bit more expensive than at other grocery stores selling lobsters but my time, gas, and ability to get the lobsters is worth paying a bit extra in my opinion as opposed to driving some place where it is advertised for less and they either haven't received their shipment yet for the day (which means waiting a few hours for it to arrive) or they are sold out. This year for lobster season, IGA decided to offer a lower price (but still slightly more expensive than what was advertised at 2 other grocery stores selling lobsters) for people who had the Scene+ card so before deciding to drive here, I applied for my Scene+ card online and stored it on my phone. The person working in the seafood section was very friendly and offered good customer service for the lobster. I personally have a preference for female lobsters over male lobsters so ordered 2 female lobsters and he had no problems accommodating me. The place is also clean and the inside is very nice. I noticed that this grocery store also had a self checkout aisle and since there wasn't a line-up to use these machines whereas there were line-ups to use the cashier aisles, I opted to use the self checkout aisle. Paid very easily and scanned the virtual Scene+ card from my phone. The person working/helping people in the self-check aisle was very friendly and nice as well when I had problems scanning my virtual Scene+ card from my phone. This IGA also has a dining area which has free WiFi so you can buy some prepared food and eat it in the dining area. For me, the location isn't the most convenient which is the only reason I wouldn't visit this place regularly. I'm closer to the Maxi and Super-C area of VSL which is why I would go there regularly and would just visit this IGA occasionally as it is an extra ~10 minutes from me by car to get here with traffic.
