Very odd ambience for a grocery store. All the shelves are packed with stuff but everything is clearly just thrown in there. What can I say about Segal's Market? Once upon a time when I was a poor and starving student living in Montreal I shopped at Segal's every week. Yes, it's grungy in there, and smells weird, and is full of salty people, but I was able to get bags of groceries that fed me for an entire week for about $10. Admittedly that was a while ago, and I was a vegetarian back then, and I weighed less than 100 lbs, but hey I lived to tell this story. I was back at Segal's this past week, for a stroll down memory lane, and with the exception of some new security cameras and TV screens, it's exactly how I remembered it. It's still poorly lit. The refrigerated sections still have those yellowing plastic curtains. The floors are still dirty and it still smelled weird. Prices are a bit higher, but I would say keeping with inflation. They stock a few more organic items now. The bulk items used to just be in open tubs (like at Bulk Barn, minus the coverings), but are now in plastic garbage/recycling bins, with lids, lol. The "scoops" are plastic water jugs that are tied to the bins. Most are cracked or broken. I found this amusing. This place has apparently been around since 1927. Maybe it's just nostalgia speaking, but I have a soft spot in my heart for its "this is who I am, warts and all, take it or leave it" attitude. read more

Funny that I am reading reviews about this place as weird and creepy. The store inside is not organized and it is not pleasant to the eyes. For the ones who value the external appearances, you wouldn't know it is a grocery store from the outside and it looks like something that comes from a third world country. To the good stuff inside: Lots of great products for a variety of budget needs. Tons of organic products both local and around the world. Due to the covid situation, you might get a lineup but they are usually not that long because they have four registers. read more

I have shopped here for many of years, best prices overall. took a while to find where items were on shelves, but the staff, although busy are courteous and helpful. so pleased when they began selling organic. so nice not to have food enclosed in plastic. I still don't like this place. I just find it so ... uncomfortable- between the metal baskets, the shopping carts, I'm too busy worrying about if my tetanus shots are up to date because of the likelihood of being scraped be some metal cart, basket or shelf. You can't just walk normally and feel at ease. You're constantly having to be aware of all the moving parts around you lest you get jabbed by something. Oh yeah, I'm not sure if he's a manager or something but there's a balding "bro" who hangs out by the cash and he's extremely rude and not helpful at all and just throws attitude at everyone around him. SEGAL'S IS WEIRD. It's poorly lit. It smells weird. It's badly organised. It'll take you a year to find the one thing you're looking for because it's hidden under a pile of lemons. There are salted fish in a pile at the back. The bulk items are stored in actual bins (clean ones, though). In short, it's like a serial killer designed a grocery store. And I love it. It's so cheap! Incredibly, incomprehensibly cheap. I got excited at Provigo because avocados were on sale for $1 each. Then I found out that Segal's sells them for 67c. EVERY. DAY. It's a beautiful mess here, and the staff always help you out. Yes, it smells weird. Yes, it's creepy inside. Yes, I'm never going to buy one of those salted fish and I've never seen anyone else buy them, either (why are they there?) but I love Segal's forever and always because it means I can buy all the vegetables and cheese I want without going bankrupt. read more

One of the spots I miss the most about not being in MTL anymore. Imagine a small scale Costco but with tons of ethnic and organic products. That is where you want to go to shop. Seems like nothing from outside and when you firs t step in, but as you go through the alleys, you can not help but dance with your cart as you discover the amazing prices and the amount of quality shelf food (their fruits and veggies are not organic but very good prices). Cheap, BUT the large man who oversees the customer flow (apparently the "boss") at the front HAS NOT HAD A SHOWER IN LIKE A MONTH. Totally disgusting. You can smell him six feet away. I had to literally cover my face when he would walk by. His odour is pungent, overwhelming and unhygienic. I don't think I can go back, he was that stinky. If the head staff cannot have the basic decency to keep their bodies clean, lord knows how they treat the produce. I feel sorry for the four or five very nice cashiers who have to work in the presence of such a disgusting and preventable odour. For gods sake, dude, take a shower!!!! Update: I forgot about the smelly guy and went back there in April 2017. This means that his odour had an odour endurance rating of about 13-14 weeks. food was cheap and not smelly this time. Everyone in the neighborhood knows that this grocery store is a dump...but everything organic is amazingly cheaper than anywhere else, sometimes $3 to $4 cheaper. I usually get my cheeses, nut butter, soaps, protein fibre powder, ice cream, yogourt, etc...all organic and all $1 (and more) cheaper than any of the health food grocery stores around. The only draw backs are their terrible quality fruits and vegetables (often rotten), and the staff (some men are usually not very helpful, except the really "big" guy is an angel) and the poor cashiers are all adorable even though they must be frozen stiff at the front door. Very good selection of organic food. The positives almost outweighs the negatives. It's a bit like stepping into a timewarp into the mid seventies. And to boot it is right next door to the only remaining xxx rated Cinema L'Amour of North America! Time has stood still in this area! read more

When i didn't live in the area, i used to take a half hour bus ride (or bike ride) just to get here. You get something of what we'd imagine fells like a 3rd world market experience coming to Segal's because the isles are cluttered with yet unsorted boxes, you fish your olives out of huge garbage like containers, and there is a pile of unprotected dried salted fish at the back. Yet Segal's remains my number one destination for food shopping because it is dirt cheap and i usually save between 20 an 40% of my normal grocery bill, and they have a large variety of organic and vegetarian products. if you can't find an item, just ask a clerk: they will move the three rows of boxes that are in front of your desired item or tell you they're out of "x" today. have fun shopping at Segal's! read more

Why did I shop at Provigo all these years... Finally got introduced to Segals by my friend, and I was skeptical at first at how much could a few cents savings do for me, but when the total rang up it was ~1/3 cheaper than what I would have paid at regular chain supermarkets! Segals does have a bit of a sketchy, dingy vibe (partly due to the weird smell of dried fish in the back) but it is definitely worth it! They have the best deals for their veggies and eggs i found, just don't come here for meat since it is mostly limited to sausages. Also don't forget to bring a bag since they don't supply them (they have boxes)! You might come out smelling a bit funky but the prices here definitely are worth it :) read more

Once you get over the smell of dried fish, the crazy disorganization of the store, the dirty floors, and the crowded isles, you'll enjoy shopping at this place because the prices are generally very low. That being said, I'm sure this place is in violation of some major health code violations and there are certain items that I categorically would not buy from here because I question how the food has been stored. Ex; you'll often see items like yogurt sitting in boxes in the middle of an aisle not inside an refrigerator. The first time I went in here it was a bit of a nightmare, and I remember seeing a toddler crawling around on the floor of the produce aisle in puddles of dirty water while produce literally rolled around on the floor with him. Between that and the smell of the dried fish that sits in the back of the store, I was ready to leave pretty much immediately. Other customer's are audibly and visibly exasperated by the state of chaos that the store is perpetually in. If you go on a busy evening when people are hitting the store on the way home from work, this place is likely to give even the most mellow person an anxiety attack. Again - how has this place not been cited for health code violations? Does Health Canada do its shopping here too and not want to shut it down so they can save some money? read more

There are no other grocery stores that give me what I need for this level of price. Segals is crowed, has it's own aroma and gives off the impression of disorganization, however this is only skin deep. The staff can help you find what you need due to them a) having a lot of random sought after products and b) having a lot of staff. Best place for groceries and other sundries? Yes. Best place for fresh produce or bread or meats or cheeses? No. Thankfully it's located close to some amazing stores where you can find those other things, but for everything else it's impossible to beat. The grocery store that everyone refers as "4001" (its address) rather than its real name! We all agree that it is dirty and cheap. Yet it has been opened for a long time and everybody knows about this place, even my parents and in-laws that live in the West Island. The produce section is a hit or miss. This is your hippie grocery store. If you're vegan, gluten free, fair trade, ingredient conscious, you will want to hit up Segal's. Honestly though, it's a tiny place so they don't have a huge selection but I appreciate this is one of the only places in Montreal where I can buy my hemp milk. And cute pastas for date nights. And $1 Belgian chocolate bars. And cheap nutritional yeast. And... well, just go check it out after you eat at Shwartz's next door. It's busy has heck; trying to buy milk here on a Saturday while navigating the narrow aisles past shopping carts and baskets is like a game of stand-up Twister. Come at quieter times so you can soak in the organic hippie / poor portugese vibe and poke into all the corners to see what bizarre foods you might find. The prices are super cheap, but watch the expiry dates and age of the produce because you might not have long to eat it. Their stock rolls over fast and they're likely to be out of something you're looking for, so expect to make do. The asian market further up St Laurent is a good alternative if you don't feel like pushing your way through the crowds at Segal's. read more

A great place to go if you have a limited budget - I routinely get groceries here for less than half the price than if I bought them at Provigo. A word of advice though and try to avoid peak times. The isles are very narrow and it's near impossible to move around with more than a dozen people in the store. read more

I read about this place as the best value supermarket in Montreal through someone's blog. I went out of my way to come here as a tourist. Although you may have trouble finding the entrance, it does not look like traditionally polished supermarket inside. Google maps kept telling me I arrived, but I had to ask locals where to find the entrance. I loved the place. It did not take me too long to figure out who the owner, head manager was. I think he thought I was trying to steal stuff as I was browsing, taking pictures, and reading ingredients for so long. He has a strong personality and dropped f-bombs in English at ease when I asked him when the turkish pizza would be restocked. I liked him instantly. I came here everyday for my five days visiting Montreal. I have difficult illness digesting certain things in foods so I have to eat from supermarkets where I can read the ingredients. In addition to the Turkish pizza (Nane pizza), I was most impressed by the tea, kombucha, and yogurt collection. Also, they have a sugar free 80% dark chocolate bar that I cannot find anywhere in the USA. Also, the cashiers are all lovely women. They all spoke English and I felt the well-known Canadian friendliness from all of them. read more

If you haven't heard about it here, it was probably through a friend of a freind of a friend... and now you're hooked! Hidden on St.Laurent right before Duluth and with no sign, Segal's is a great place for the budget shopper. I checked out this place once and is now my go-to place for affordable vegetarian and alternative products. Everything that will cost you a fortune in a supermarket, you can get here for a killer deal! Think tofu, tempeh, cereals and granola's, alternative milks, spices, spreads, organic breads...they have everything, including a selection of Portugese products loyal to the nature of the neighbourhood. Produce is so-so...gotta be there on the right day. Hidden find: they receive fresh vegan muffins and treats on tuesdays, and they only cost from 1-2$ Be sure not to piss off the big-guy...you know who I'm talking about! I frequent this store twice a month at least. They have a variety of selection- affordable and reasonable. Even though it is out of my way, it is worth it to go. I find the employees helpful if you ask them. It is a small place but pack of good...ness. I have not encounter any rudeness but "normal" way of handling business, in my opinion. read more

Cheap with good selection of products. Not the place to get fresh meat, but definitely good for fruits and vegetables. It's got a bit of a third-world market feeling, but it's the cheapest place around. It is very disorganized, but once you know where to find stuff it's ok. I shop there weekly for a few months now. The people are not very friendly and their customer service is horrible. Make sure you check the expiration date because they do sell expired goods and will not give you your money back if you ask to return it even with a receipt. With that said however, I still shop there because of the low prices but if there was another market with the same prices, I would definitely shop there instead. read more

Ty segal's is the BUEST grocery store for price wise yum yums in TOWN! I chatted with aisle clerk zak, mitch, and patrick for HOURS and had many lols. I feel bad for the people who work in the freezer, arent there human rights in place here in our great nation! WOuld eat here again. read more

"Community" grocery store for no regard for the community. They knowingly let their delivery trucks block all of St-Dominique for over 15 mins at a time., disrupting traffic, causing people to have to reverse into oncoming traffic and potential accidents. I didn't expect much from this store judging its exterior (and even its interior) but was really surprised at the myriad of items they have for sale. They have organic items, cheap produce and many items from different countries. I will be back ALOT! This market was a great find for us, as we transition to living in the lower plateau! its a relief to find a well-stocked market with basics + an eclectic range of organic and healthy grocery options, in walking distance. Big, big step up from the depanneurs; cheaper and more convenient than the big chain supermarkets. As others have noted, segals carries lots of vegetables and prices are pretty good. The quality of the vegetables can be variable - you have to go in with an eye to what looks good, rather than counting on something you saw last time, being in stock and fresh-looking. read more
