Scanned the web for some typical dutch food and came across aswesawit.com and took the advice of the writer to Cafe de L'Opera in Rembrandtplein, Amsterdam. Ordered the Bittergarnituur, a plate of appetizers which included the bitterballen which are meatball size of mashed potatoes and minced beef that are breaded and fried. An interesting concept to dip in a mayo-mustardy thick sauce, which was worth trying and all washed down with a local Dutch beer. Service was excellent and prices fair. read more

Great price and easy way to sample lots of the traditional Dutch dishes. It's in Rembrandtplein, and surrounded by other great spot and really alive at night. I read about this spot on Pinterest and glad we went out of our way. We got: Bittergarnituur, a plate of appetizers that included bitterballen and kroketten served with mustard, bitterballen are meatball-sized balls of potato and ground beef that are breaded and fried. A really pretty spot in the Rembrandt place in center Amsterdam. The place has a great covered terrace that I believe would be really enjoyable during Spring and Summer. I just went there during the first week of January, so it was cold and cloudy, however the restaurant's decoration is pretty: French art-deco touches with a Parisian Opera-like style. I had a tomato soup with basil that was pretty decent but nothing out of this world. I also had a chicken salad that felt tasteless. I paired my food with house red wine and felt pleased but I'd probably look out for better restaurants around. read more

Okay, I need to confess one thing before you read the review below: I actually only come here with a BIG hangover.. And I will explain Why :) L'opera is a decent looking restaurant with a big terrace where you can really have a good seat when it's a sunny day in Amsterdam! In the back they have these lovely couches where you can just sit down and relax. Those couches are definitely the once I recommend if you want to relax and have a good chat. But all nice about the couches and stuff but that's not really the reason why I come here. Here it comes... Tutututummmm They serve cheese croquettes on very nice land bread. Hahahahaha Maybe somewhere else in Amsterdam they serve them as well, but this place is my get away. Besides that as a vegetarian, I sometimes desperately need a croquette and the cheese ones are delicious. Of course they have a lot of other different and good options. Like the bread with old cheese and fig chutney!! The proportions are good, sometimes even to much for little me! The reason why I didn't gave start is because of the waiters. One of my favorite spots in Amsterdam (I visited twice during a one week stay!). Amazing hot chocolate and the BEST fries in town. Excellent location where you can sit outside, people watch, and soak in Amsterdam (also right across from a tram stop which makes getting there super easy). The teriyaki stir fry with chicken is a smaller portion but great. Our group arrived 10 minutes before the kitchen was closing but the staff was nice enough to seat us and get our orders in! Simply amazing. As soon as I'm back in Amsterdam I will 100% be visiting this place again. Thanks l'Opera! You must eat here! read more

Oozing with 1920's Parisienne character and mood. Velvet and wood canopies, big windows, a spiraling wooden staircase like the one the Titanic. Waitress out of a Manet painting. Coffee is ok. Food is normal. Service is decent. Prices are reasonable. Cappucino was just over 2 euros. read more

This place was convenient and ok. The service was slow and spotty-had to catch a waiter or waitress to get service or request something-no-one checked back with me. There is an outside area, covered outside area and inside seating. I had lunch there and had cheese croquettes. They had an interesting taste and I enjoyed them. The place was more crowded than many in the area so perhaps has a good reputation or return customers. read more

A very convenient place right on Rembrandt Square. Out all day and very tired, we decided to try the restaurant right next to the hotel. Turns out it was very very good. Lots of food sounds like it is a home type but turns out not so. We decided on a pasta dish, spaghetti bolognese​, and it turned out to taste like home in Colorado and better yet, home-like​ in Rome. The portion sizes were more than adequate and the service was awesome. There is a lot of competition on the Square and most places are very conscious of that fact. They do everything to please and l'Opera is no exception. One of the better things about Europe is that they are in no hurry for you to leave. Sometimes​ it is hard to get a check to pay. L'Opera has an extensive menu​ with a good sampling of regional foods of the Netherlands. This includes Bitterballen - small meatballs with potatoes that are unique to the Netherlands - quite good actually. Oh yes, the slices of bread​ are to die for. read more

Very reasonably priced for Rembrandtplein. Three fantastic seating choices: outside, inside under the glass roof, or inside inside in swanky ornate digs. Pretty much the same beer, house wine, goat cheese salad, etc., as in most cafes around town, but it's good and reasonably priced for the location. This place charges a ot of money for sub-par food. The tomato soup with basil cream mostly tastes like salt. Who screws up tomato soup?? The salad has tasteless vegetables and a weird white milky dressing that isn't quite ranch and doesn't quite tasting like anything. One of our friend's parfait came to the table totally crystallized by freezer burn. When he tried to send it back, the waiter explained that it was just chocolate pieces he was tasting. What a weird excuse! All the other food was at best OK. Probably the only thing this place has going for it is the location. read more

Stopped by for lunch with my Dutch pals on our way to the cinema. I was extremely pleased. I speak almost zero Dutch, and our wait person figured out a good lunch to suite my vegetarian lifestyle. To sum this place up I'd say it's a missed opportunity. The location and space is nice and the menu looks good. But when you get the food, it's just ok. There is a good variety of food, but it's all significantly under seasoned and the portions are average size at best. The wine selections is also just ok. And the service is again, just ok, nothing special to ruin the night or make it memorable. read more
