When I noticed that the original business page for J & L Hardware had the "Yelpers report this…read morelocation has been closed" banner stretched near the top of the page, I decided to make this my 100th Review. I was pretty sure it was still open and I wanted to be sure everyone else knows that J & L Hardware is still open. As I walked toward the door, there was an "OPEN" sign lit up in one window. There was a clerk at the counter and he informed me that the man making a key for a customer was the owner. The owner's name is Juan and he was very nice. I told him about Yelp having his business listed as closed and I asked if it was okay to take some pictures. As you can see by the pictures, J & L Hardware is indeed open! I tried to check-in on the original page but since it was "closed", I had to open a new business page to check-in. I have notified Yelp of this situation and I hope they will be able to combine both pages because William H left a nice review on the original business page. As for the hardware store, aside from better lighting, some newer products, a different owner and signage - - it hasn't changed too much from the way I remembered it as Reck's Hardware in the 50-60's! (Although it was Reck's longer than that.) I have been in here on occasion over the years--I used to do more work on my house and it was convenient for me to come here if I needed something. More recently, my neighbor was able to pick up some bolts at J & L Hardware to fix my gate - - it was a lot more convenient and pleasant than going to Home Depot. My experience with the place was well, the store was small but easy to find things that are needed for supplies,( well some to most things you can find there) the owner was a generous man that grateful he greets us customers and helps them find what they need, the items are at a fair price, only two things that I don't really find fond of was that there is no public bathroom and you can only pay in card if it's over ten dollars what you are purchasing. Usually, packages I order I have delivered to my job, however, on January 30, 2018, I ordered a 25-lb snow blower from Amazon.com that I scheduled to pick up at a UPS Access Point location due to the weight of it. When placing an order through a representative, she assured me that it would be delivered via UPS. This was an important item because we had a horrendous snow storm that was coming in a few days predicting 6 inches to a foot of snow. This was an awful time for me because I had just lost my Mom on 1/17/18 and needed to make sure her house was plowed. I got notification through Amazon that the item was ready so I went to this store to pick up. I didn't know what I'd be facing when doing this. I told the young man at the counter that I was here to pick up a package and gave him my ID. He told me that he didn't have a package for me. I showed him proof through my phone app that the package had been delivered there. He looked around and then told me "Oh, there is a package that came from the post office and I opened it, is this yours?" I looked inside and lo and behold, the parts to the snow blower were in there. It was then that the chaos started. He told me we don't normally accept post office packages and you should be glad that I accepted it. I informed him that Amazon told me it would be through UPS. He told me that since it was shipped to his store and it's not UPS that he is not obligated to turn it over to me. When I tried to answer, he threatened to keep my package and told me to let him think about what he plans on doing. I explained to him that my dear Mom had just passed away and to please not treat me in this way, let me have my package and I will just go. He kept looking at my ID, knowing that the package was directly addressed to me. I know he was enjoying threatening me and giving me a hard time. When I tried to show him the name on the invoice to prove that it was me, he interrupted that attempt and told me "Just take this package before I change my mind". It was then I was just about in tears. There was a line of people so I guess he was happy that he had an audience to show this harassment. There was an gentleman who also worked at the store, watching the incident who felt sorry for me. He saw me as a woman trying to struggle with this package and he came to my rescue and told me he would carry it to my car. That was the only bright light to this story. I thank God for him. I will never step foot in that store again - no human should ever be treated with that much harassment, disrespect and rudeness over a simple shipment error from a business that wasn't my fault.
