One of the best things about living in a city like Toronto is the presence of eateries representing virtually every cuisine on the planet. It's doubtful too many towns would have a Nicaraguan restaurant, which is a shame if the quality of the food at La Bella Managua is any indication. We arrived at the small joint around 1:00 on a Thursday and the place was sparsely populated (although several big tables were reserved). A quick perusal of the promising menu led us to a couple of items: Nacatamal ("Typical Nicaraguan Tamales served with Garlic Bread stuffed with Seasonal Pork Loin and Vegetables"): I've never been a huge fan of tamales - the flavor and texture is generally a little too one-note for me - but this variation on the venerable dish was definitely a cut above. I will note, however, that the pork loin is very erratically placed in the dish, as my dining companion initially got all the meat in his half. (I didn't even realize there *was* meat in the thing until I noticed it on his plate.) Pollo a la Parrilla ("Grilled Seasoned Chicken Breast Served with Gallo Pinto (Rice and Beans), Avocado Salad, and Sweeted Plantain"): I loved everything about this concoction. Every component here is delicious: the perfectly-cooked chicken boasts an irresistibly grilled flavor, the rice and beans are next level, the avocado salad is super tasty and refreshing, and the plantain provides the plate with bursts of sweetness. I could totally see myself eating this dish on a weekly basis. I'll also note that the service was very quick and efficient. read more

I love this Nicaraguan restaurant with home-style cooking. It's rare to find authentic Nicaraguan restaurant in the city. The interior is adorned with Nicaraguan-themed ornaments and photos on the walls, including the iconic blue & white flag. Food is amazingly delicious. I've had the Ceviche Mixto (served with thin plantain crisps), Red Snapper, Mahi-Mahi, and some of the vegetarian dishes (e.g. tamale, rice and beans, fried cheese, plantains). I usually order extra tostones on the side. Most of the main dishes come with green / avocado salad and rice. Food: If you can eat fish off a bone, I recommend getting the Fish of the Day, on the day I went it was a yellowtail snapper. There are many bones so please take caution when eating and sharing. The sides pair well with the fish. Comes with white rice, tostones (smashed fried plantain) had the subtle natural sweetness from the plantains with a crispy exterior but if you have a sweet tooth then get the sweetened plantains, the diced avocado salad was a unique way to prepare an avocado salad balanced with some citrus. The carne asada (beef steak) my friend had was just as delicious, both dishes were filling. Service & atmosphere: I called in to reserve a table several days before arriving on a Friday evening. By the time 6 pm rolled around was when the restaurant was packed. The waiters and waitresses were accommodating, patient and treated customers well. I so wanted to love this place :( but I ordered the carne asada and it was so over cooked and fatty and chewy I ended up throwing out most of the meat because it was not edible. Carne asada should be very thin flank steak and that's been tenderized and this was not that :( sadly I think they used the wrong cut of meat. I will try again but everything else on the plate was tasty the PlantIn were perfect the rice was decent. Won't write this place off yet. I maybe just didn't pick the right dish. read more

Definitely tastes homemade - it's something that I could've whipped up at home if I didn't know what to make for dinner and if I had a bunch of leftover vegetables. Honestly there wasn't anything noteworthy about the pasta other than the portions being really big. I'm sure there are way better options than the pasta. Service was good. Saw them on blogto for their ceviches so had to come by and try. Came by on a weekend for dinner for 2 without reservations and were seated right away. It definitely got busier later in the evening. Would recommend calling to make a reservation in advance though. Tried their mixed ceviche (shrimp and fish) - it was fresh tasting with loads of diced tomatoes and red onions. Might have been a tad too citrusy for us as it overpowered the taste of the fish. Came with plantsin chips. Got their fried calamari - nice and lightly fried, their dip was delish. Also got their special, their whole fish of the day (sea bass) with veggies and rice was $27 or $28. Fantastic value. Fish was cooked nicely, meat was still tender. This felt like a nice homey meal. I don't get it. La Bella Managua's 4.5 stars is obviously valid given it's an average of over 200 reviews. But I just don't get it. Even checking for heightened expectations, I thought it was just ok. My wife and I went here for dinner (reservation needed as it gets packed) and got: - Fish Ceviche: Hardly any fish, didn't have that sour kick, and the size-to-price ratio was not great at $13. - Churrasco: The beef was tender though a tad bland. The yuka fries were not "milky" (like all great ones are), and the side veggies were pedestrian. Good portion size for $20. - Seabass Special: This was the fish of the day, which wasn't exceptional. Simple fry with not a lot of added flavour. Cooked well in that the fish meat was not dry despite the crispy skin. The quality of the fish was fine, and it was a good size at a reasonable price ($24). The side avocado salad gave some freshness, but the real star was the side sweet plantains which were really good. So awesome plantains, ok everything else, at pretty good prices. (Shrug.) I guess La Bella Managua will just be one of my Yelp mysteries in life. read more

I never tried Nicaraguan food before. Thanks to our birthday girl, Kerry that brought us to a little gem. We went there last night. It was a Tuesday and it was packed. I'm very familiar with this area, but somehow I didn't know that this restaurant exists! We ordered many dishes but I didn't have enough chance to get pictures from all of them. I had the Fish of the day, grilled Sea Bass. My husband had Camarones a la Sabana or Sauteed black tiger shrimp in white wine garlic butter sauce. We also shared Mussels Jalapenos with our godson (When did we have one!? ). I was satisfied with my dish, the Grilled Sea Bass. It came with a whole fish and a big portion of fresh avocado salad, rice and fried plantain. I love how they made the avocado salad. They used big chunks of avocado mixed with tomatoes, bell pepper and lettuce. It was refreshing and paired well with the fish. I had Mojito with it. I should have ordered white wine . Based on the reviews here I was expecting to be blown away, but I wasn't. I ordered the bisteck encebollado (pan fried beef top sirloin). On paper it sounded delicious and flavourful with caramelized onions and roasted garlic, however I found the dish to be quite bland. The sauce didn't have much flavour other than tasting sweet. However I did enjoy the fried tostones and the beef was nice and tender. My friend ordered carne asada (grilled boneless beef steak). When I tried some of it, right off the bat I tasted just how much more flavour was in the meat compared to mine! The dish would've been perfect but the meat was way too tough and just chewing it made my mouth hurt. Portion wise it was a lot of food with the exception of our order of French fries. For $4.95 I'm expecting to get a lot more than just a handful of fries. It just barely filled up a small plate. I think I either got the wrong dishes or it was just an off day for them. We went here with a group of 4 on a Saturday night and were very glad we had reservations as the restaurant was constantly full. It is not a very big place but it is cozy. The service was a little slow, but it may have been due to it being a busy night. We ordered the drinks, ceviche, and for the mains had the rack of lamb, camarones (tiger shrimp) and a vegetarian platter. The food came out in good time. To start of, the drinks were very delicious, but the ceviche was not the best I have had. There wasn't much fish in it. I had the lamb and it was cooked perfectly and the gravy was great. My friends had the tiger shrimp and the bandeja tipica (with fried cheese) and they seemed to like their meals as well. I've got 4 F's that I can use to describe La Bella Managua: flavourful, fantastic, filling, and friendly! Bisteck Encebollado: the caramelized onion/tomato sauce steals the show. Combined with the beef and tostones, it's a winning combination. Warning: the salad came with normal dressing, as well as what appeared to be onions in a vinegrette. I poured the onion mixture on my salad and it was SPICY! Totally my fault for not doing a taste test first, the salad was still good though. Pollo a la parilla: the chicken had a delicious grilled flavour. And if you've never had sweet plantains before, I dare you to try one and not get immediately hooked. We ordered pickup and even though they were busy, our order was ready in 30 minutes. The person at the front was super friendly. Portion sizes were generous, you get two servings in one platter (enough for me to enjoy leftovers for lunch the next day, woohoo). I really enjoyed the food and am sad I don't live closer so I can eat here more often. Highly recommend! read more

My husband and I have been eating here for years and it's hands down our favourite restaurant in Toronto. The quality is exceptional and the meal size for the price is next to none. All the dishes taste fresh and homemade. The owner is so kind and friendly. We ordered through Ritual and one of our meals was somehow missed but we didn't notice until we were home. We phoned to let them know, and the owner Jesus Morales personally drove to our home to deliver our missed meal (since they don't offer delivery) and added in a tres leches cake as an apology for the inconvenience. Blown away by the incredible customer service and the way the business goes above and beyond to ensure customers have a great experience. We are regulars at this lovely local spot but our experience on Valentine's Day has really left a bad taste in our mouths. After making a regular reservation via Yelp and then a confirmation call, we arrive at the restaurant only to learn that they are only serving a very overpriced and limited prix fixe menu.. with no prior warning. What a discovery, I totally love this place. I believe this is the only Nicaraguan restaurant in Toronto, and I've never been to Nicaragua, but I think it is a good sign that now I want to go after my dining experience here, hehe. I ordered the cerdo con yuca, meat was tender and I loved the spices on it, yuca was soft and delicious, portion was generous. The ceviche was the star of the menu in my opinion, it had a great flesh flavour although it could have had more fish in it - and was quite expensive for the small portion. Nicaraguan is hard to come by so we were excited to try this place out, and we all came out raving about our experience. We started with a jug of Cacao with Milk, which our server explained as "like chocolate milk, but much better". We were skeptical but we did end up agreeing. It wasn't as sweet but was still rich and delicious. The biggest difference was the subtle nutty flavor that the real cacao imparts into the drink, and the sight grainy texture that makes the drink somehow creamier. Around the table, we got the mahimahi, lamb chops and the shrimp. Every dish was delicious and everyone loved their selection. My mahimahi was buttery and soft, with a subtle char flavor. I had a bite of the lamb and it was so tender, well seasoned and perfectly cooked. Loved every bite! The service was friendly, welcoming and patient with us (we asked about the cacao with milk for a while). I would recommend for a special adventurous dinner for two or even for the family! read more

Took a while to get a seat on a Tuesday. Staff was really nice but things took a really really long time to come. Especially our drinks, we had the local drink and it was really nice. I got the Carne asada and it was good. My friend got the lamb and enjoyed that too. Two other friends split the tacos which they really enjoyed even though it came on a massive bed of cabbage with ketchup and sour cream smothered on it. I love the fish of the day and the chicken plus the sauce and the fried plantain and the service is good too. They are all nice .

A solid 4*s. Knocked off a star for food taking approx. 30mins to arrive to table after ordering. Arrived just before 3pm, ordered within 5-10mins, drinks came 15mins after that (yes, including water), and food came within the 30min mark of ordering. I think this is a tad too long to wait. Water should've arrived shortly after ordering, not 15mins after that. Other than food taking its time to arrive to the table, servers did check-in with our table at least 3Xs. So that is a good sign! We ordered their version of Mojito ($8.50), "Tacos", & Pollo a la Parillia. Mojito was pretty good, although it wasn't as alcohol-y, but with more fizz - Club Soda, I think. Still, I think this would be refreshing especially when the weather gets warmer! "Tacos" ($10) - Think taquitos, without cheese, then a coleslaw with some sour cream and ketchup zigzagged all over the dish. They could've done without the ketchup as the coleslaw was already sour. This dish was good, but again, not what I expected when I read "tacos". Pollo a la Parillia (~$16) - basically 2 flat pieces of grilled chicken over rice and peas, some pieces of plantains, with a tomato/avo/sweet pepper salad. Portions of the rice + salad were generous. The chicken pieces were thin and on the smaller side. Dish was good for 1.5 person. ***Entrées, imo, were totally shareable esp. IF you also order an app. On its own, you still maybe a bit hungry afterwards.*** Most of the patrons appeared to be Spanish speaking, so that gives me an indication that the spot is pretty authentic. Not a cheapie spot though, expect to spend ~$15-20pp, without any alcoholic drinks. I'd go back, but NOT on an empty stomach!!! read more
