I lived on a boat in Ischia for a week and a half. I was worried half way through my time there, that I was not going to find any food that was authentic and reasonably priced. (Everything is expensive near the ports, and central) Until one evening I was informed by the captain of the boat that the five of us were venturing up into the mountains to dine that evening. Apparently, he had a friend named Benjamin, and Benjamin owned a restaurant. So up we went. I can tell you, I probably would have the hardest time finding the place ever again. A lot of winding cramped roads. Stopping never seemed to be an option, or turning around. Until we reached a sign that said La Cantina del Sargente. I thought the Captain was pulling my leg that the place existed.
We show up to not just a restaurant. But a persons house. The first thing that smacks me in the face is the smell. It smelled just like my grandmothers kitchen. Sure enough, Benjamin takes us into the kitchen, and there are 5 little ladies with aprons on cooking away. No English was spoken, but they were so kind and humble. I tried to tell them my mouth was watering. We take our seats on this lovely patio over looking all of their grape vines (Yes, they make their own wine as well, sooooo good), and their garden full of vegetables, and tons of herbs. It was gorgeous.
Then here comes the food, you sit family style on a long table. Benjamin himself helps serve along with his family. Bruschetta is a staple in Italian meals. Almost like a snack mid day, or before a meal to whet you appetite. They brought some out now, and it was delicious.
Second course was a penne pasta with ragu of rabbit. I damn near licked the plate. So good with handmade bread to clean it off.
They served fresh tomatoes with basil as a side, and then the main course was a braised rabbit, and i mean... head and all. Everything was in the bowl. liver, head, legs, and I don't know what else (and honestly do not want to know) I looked past the face that came up in my head of my first pet that I owned, and dug in. It was divine. I even ate the liver. I couldn't stop myself.
We washed it all down with Benjamins homemade white wine, and a delicious homemade cake that was stuffed with ricotta and chocolate. Who knew those two things could taste so good!!!
I urge people to take the adventure to visit here. You will come as strangers, and leave as friends. Full and happy, the way life should be!!!! read more
