Da Filippo is our 11 th dinner and the BEST dinner since we arrived in Italy. We were tired of eating at popular touristy restaurant's. We asked The concierge at our hotel where do you go to eat. He proudly recommended Da Filippo's. He even mentioned that the restaurant has a car and driver that would come and pick us up. No charge! We took the short free three minute drive and we arrived at the farm to table restaurant. We were quickly seated under the canopy in the outdoor Garden. Service quick and efficient. Wine list: very extensive with reasonably prices. Appetizers prosciutto platter, egg plant Parmesan, deep fried zucchini blossoms stuffed with a mozzarella Centers. Moto bene! Our party of four then had fresh green salads and four different entrees each prepared fresh with love farm to table. My favorite was the lamb chops soft tender mouth watering. It was so nice to see a menu with such a large variety not just pizza and pasta. Sea food, beef, pork, chicken, the steak entree was large no tiny tapa plates here that is for sure. We had an unfortunate incident of finding a piece of glass-like hard plastic as I was finishing my child's food. I actually had to spit it out. I pointed it out to the server, she asked for the piece 'to show it to the chef', nobody got back to us. My husband talked to the lady in charge who was so defensive and rude. I asked for the piece back but was told that it was thrown in the bin and that if I wanted it back, she could take the bin out so that the carabinieri or I can dig through it. We've already looked passed at the ants on the table and dog roaming around the kitchen. Liqueur served with a floating insect and when pointed out, no apologies given and was even placed on the bill. Bottled water served already opened. But finding a piece of glass/hard plastic in my 6-year old's food is serious. How the situation was handled was so unprofessional and downright disrespectful. We were charged & paid for the entire meal, including the dessert with glass/hard plastic, and left feeling insulted. Things could have ended differently if even a simple apology was given. With their bellies full of tourist customers that eat, pay and go, customer service is last of their priority. Run away and spend your money elsewhere, Sorrento has better places to eat that offer a more refined service. This is overrated. read more

Best meal yet in Sorrento. It was recommended by our hotel and happy they did. It's outside of Sorenson proper and they had a shuttle for customers which was great. I had the lamb chops with roasted potatoes the broccoli as actually the Chinese broccoli. Far too bitter for me. My friend ordered the eggplant dish with huge plate pasta. Animal friendly environment with the outside seating area covered by a bamaboo roof, lemon trees family owned. It was so nice to find this place in our trip. Loved it. 3.5 stars. Many reviewers report this is a place frequented by locals, and they are correct. But this in no way guarantees any assurances of anything. First off, getting here can be a real challenge. Logistics are further complicated by the fact that Apple maps dumps you off about a quarter mile away from the actual restaurant. See photo of map pin versus my actual location while eating. I recommend taking advantage of their free shuttle pickup from most hotels(didn't know about until after) We were clinging the walls of some crazy narrow streets to avoid being flattened by cars, busses, and Vespers while walking here. I called to make a reservation, but they had no record of it when I arrived. Too much discussion ensued for a restaurant that was basically empty at 8pm. The published hours of operation are wrong on Yelp and on their own menus. Says closed on Thursdays. Yet here I am on a Thursday night. I mentioned to the owner his map location and hours were wrong and misleading. He was unaffected by these revelations. Octopus salad. Fresh, but mostly chewy and rubbery. Not a good representation of octopus in this region. Bean soup. Pasta fagiole. This was excellent. Tender beans, pasta, and the addition of fresh mussels combine for am amazingly flavored, hearty soup. Filet porcini. Outstanding. Not only tender and full flavored with porcini, but cooked to a perfectly satisfying med rare. Veal scallopini. They will prepare it whatever way you like. We ordered "Sorrento " style with tomato and mozzarella. Although the meat was tender, the slices of mozzarella on top were twice as thick as the meat. It overwhelmed the delicate veal and became quite unappetizing. The red sauce was way too acidic. Il Pozzo downtown executes this dish perfectly. It was a miss here. No full bar. Just beer and wine. Half bottles of good stuff also available. This is NOT a romantic or intimate setting. Local families with all the children in tow fill the space around you. Whatever space is left goes to a variety of tourists. Overall a good meal and excellent service. I just don't see myself coming back knowing there is better available nearby and the challenges of getting to this location. read more

Da Filippo is located in the hills of Sorrento just a quick taxi ride from Piazza Tasso. It's like being in a different world away from the noise and activity of downtown. This is farm to table type dining with a friendly staff and many locals, so it was a very nice change from super touristy type restaurants. Diners knew one another like they do in a neighborhood restaurant, food was delicious and prices are good! We enjoyed it so much we went back a second time and our waiters remembered us and made us feel like a part of the family. Desserts are wonderful! read more

I was in italy for about 2 weeks and I got a lot of steaks and potatoes during this time (food allergies...). I like my steak medium rare (more on the rare side) and this place has THE BEST steak hands down (cut fillet mignon on rocket and parmesan). And the house red wine is quite good (and affordable!) and shouldn't be missed! They have a beautiful garden, a little playground for children, very friendly service and generally informal ambient, and tasty tasty steak :D I went there twice, with 2 different groups and I think fried mozzarella in lemon leaves for appetizer and fried potato chips for side dish were the most memorable. read more

We loved the food and they had a few great vegetarian options. The homemade gnocchi is delicious. I wish we had gone during the day with the kids because they have a play area and animals outside (including a couple of roaming resident dogs). One should always try and eat where the locals go when abroad. The night before, we had asked one of the pool bar attendants if he had any suggestions on locations to eat, they did, we went & it was delicious! To the night we went to this place, we did the exact same thing! We stayed at the Hilton in Sorrento, the restaurant, is located just up the hill from where we were. Did you know they have a shuttle bus service that picks you up from your hotel and takes you to the restaurant for FREE? Cute restaurant, outdoors vibe, with a straw roof located in the back part of a lemon garden. GOSH the lemons here are HUGE. There is a play-place to the right of the location, where it appears, parents leave their kids there while they eat. The location has a local wine they make daily that has peaches. I had the white wine, and it was cold and sweet. We ordered several things.. For appetizers we had the a meat & cheese platter with a side of mozzarella. We also ordered grilled veggies (an assortment of what was in season, we had eggplant, roasted peppers, mushrooms, zucchini and carrots). We also had a bottle of Mojo red wine. For main plates, my aunt ordered a risotto with seafood that came with 4 large prawns, my mother ordered a rigatoni with bacalao. And me & my father both ordered a steak, served over an arugula salad with shaved parm. For my side, i had roasted red peppers. My Uncle orders a similar steak, however, his was covered in a mushroom cream sauce. His side was sliced potatoes. For dessert, we ordered a trio of small pastries. To be honest, none were really my favorite. (it could also be cause i was extremely full). Overall my experience was magnificent. I fell in love with the city of Sorrento. Overall good food and it looked like a local/family business which I always enjoy supporting. The restaurant was recommended by friends who visited and I really appreciated being out of the main tourist area and it being quiet and clearly more of a local restaurant. The walk from our B&B was up some very narrow roads but in the dark they were well lit and the restaurant was very easy to find(someone else posted it was hard to find so I worried a bit but it was really easy for us). As for food it wasn't our best meal in Italy but it was very good. I asked them if our pasta was fresh and they said they use dry pasta, but it was still good, just not as good as some of the pasta I had in Florence. They did have a wood fired oven so maybe we should have done pizza rather than pasta. Prices were very reasonable and the ambiance was very calm and nice. Overall a good experience! read more

Wonderful restaurant and dining experience. The pathway to the restaurant is so charming. Christmas lights arch over the entire path. Very friendly service and reasonably priced. About €8 for the house bottle of wine, which is much more reasonable than other restaurants we have visited in Sorrento thus far. When we were ready for dessert, our server walked us up to the dessert display case filled with 8+ options. We tried 3 desserts split amongst a party of 5 which was plenty after a filling meal. Hidden gem!! After a long travel day to Sorrento, we were in search for a place near the villa we were staying. Our search on yelp led us to D Fillipo. Although it was hard to find, our GPS took us in the wrong direction, we are so glad we asked for help and finally found the restaurant. We were the first people at the restaurant, arriving at 7 for dinner. Upon our arrival, we were greated by staff and sat down. The place is huge with large indoor and outdoor seating. The staff were absolutely wonderful and pleasant. The food was amazing. We ate here twice on our three night stay in Sorrento. Head away from the hustle and bustle of the town center and give this place a try. Definitely a must when visiting Sorrento!!! read more

What a great gem! Our hotel made arrangements for us to be picked up and dropped off. I'm glad they did because it's a helluva hill to climb to get up there! Food was great, service was excellent and fast. I always prefer to eat where the locals do when I'm travelling, and this place was bustling! Tables of 10-20 filled the restaurant. I hiked up a big hill for this... And it was worth ever darn step. Best meal in the last three weeks in Italy and top of my list EVER. I told the owner of the restaurant that I trusted him and to bring me what he thought would be best. And along with some amazing dishes he brought me #homemade chili pepper sauce without me asking. Had a really hard time finding spicy food in Italy and Is homemade chili pepper sauce was a dream come true. I can't believe this restaurant doesn't have more reviews. If there's anything you go to in Sorrento this should be it. And they were sweet enough to shuttle me back to my hotel which wasn't far. I didn't even ask they offered. Really great Italian dinner in a wonderful location. They clearly have a deal with the hotels in town as the place was suggested when we checked in and the restaurant provided free transportation to their hilltop location above the town. The restaurant is huge in a garden setting, with outdoor seating. The service was excellent and very friendly. We felt well taken care of and almost like family. For example, my son ordered fried fish, which meant that they fried the whole fish, which he had no idea how to eat. The staff was quite friendly in showing him how to eat it. The food was delicious too. We seriously considered coming back our second night in town. Highly recommended! read more

As Sorrento is just a few kilometres from Naples, the home of the pizza, it's usually a pleasure to order this kind of food when visiting the Sorrentine peninsular. Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed with my choice on this occasion. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, in a big shaded garden up the hill from Sorrento train station. It seemed popular with families, offering a full trattoria menu. The big match was on so I picked a table near the TV and rubbed my hands in anticipation of my pizza and beer. The beer selection wasn't outstanding - only industrial options available. I chose a Peroni Rosso which is always a pleasant drink with food. For the pizza, I went for the pizza Romana, with anchovies, mozzarella and tomatoes. The base was soft but uninspiring, slipping away from my knife blade on attempts to cut it. I ended up tearing it to slide out a slice. The cheese had a very strange, almost cheddar-like synthetic flavour. There didn't seem to be much actual mozzarella - just this overpowering flavour of industrial cheese. The anchovies were tiny (evidently of the budget, mass-purchased sort). I didn't finish the pizza but guzzled the beer and a litre of water - both reasonably priced at €4 and €2 each. The pizza was €6 - difficult to argue with that but the taste was very disappointing in the end. If I ever go back, I'd like to give the trattoria menu a second chance though as the environment is very pleasant and the staff capably manage this capacious restaurant. read more

Da Filippo is a really great spot. It is a bit out of the way, but the hotel has a free shuttle that will pick you up and drop you back off wherever in Sorrento you would like. It is a great local spot, large venue, way more locals by far, including families, than English speakers or other tourists. Everything is great, down to the bread they bring to the table. Definitely try the "rural chicken," which I believe is a poor translation of "local chicken." It is simply grilled with salt and pepper, bone in, and it is excellent. The clams are really great, as are the sides we tried, but the eggplant parmiggiana cannot be missed. Not the heavily breaded and deep fried perversion that is too common in US "Italian" restaurants. I doubt I'll ever go back to American "eggplant parm" after trying it at Da Filippo. Lastly, the pear and Parmiggiano desert is really delicious. read more

I picked this place from the reviews. We wanted to explore outside the main square and it was a good choice. The entrance was very pretty and there is a rustic feel to the restaurant. We started with the steamed clams and mussels that were in a light lemon/garlic oil, great for dipping bread. We also tried to spicy tomato penne because we couldn't find that anywhere along the main strip. It was such a great dish, and the pasta was al dente just the way we like it! By far the best restaurant in Sorrento. It's a primarily outdoor, family-style environment, so you have to get past children everywhere and the tailored play-ground just for kids. As with most places in Europe, smoking is allowed...so one more down side. But all-in-all worth every cent. The food is amazing; fresh, flavorful and authentic. The prices are earnestly reasonable. We arrived when they first opened. The TVs were very loud creating ambience. Waiter was the unfriendly one. Ordered White House wine he bought red and was then annoyed I wanted white. I should have stuck with the red. White was undrinkable! Eggplant parmesan was cold in center so I returned it- he wasn't happy. I ordered the seafood linguine and asked if I could have it in a red tomatoe sauce- he said yes but brought it in white sauce with one small tomatoe. All in all- don't go. This place delivered. We got there a little early (7:30pm) after tracking up the hill from the square. Once we arrived, we ordered a nice $40E bottle of Brunello from a fairly extensive selection. Proceeded to order fried calamari off the menu, which was delivered in less than 5 mins. Was spectacular and fresh! Next: I had the linguini and Venus clams, while my wife had the steak and mushroom. We locked out plates clean. By the time we were done (9) the place had filled up pretty well, and had plenty of locals. Give this a try ! I am writing this while still waiting for service! I road in the car with a couple (they pick you up). The other couple had food served to their table, water and wine and no one even approached me! I ordered wine, which i had to ask for a second time because no one brought it to me. I can't even comment on the food. If this place wasn't far from my hotel, i would have gotten up and left! We stayed at the hilton sorrento palace and the front desk this restaurant offered a free shuttle to and from the restaurant. We said, why not!? We walked in at 7pm local and it was dead. We understand dinner is to be consumed at about 9 Or 10 but after a long day of traveling we were starving. Got some bottled still water (4euro) some wine (22 euro) and an app (7euro) the whole time we were being looked and kind of laughed at. Hahaha. We took it with a grain of salt and ordered a stuffed pizza and margarita pizza after our app. Everything was amazing, wine selection was just ok, but pretty reasonable for 2 people. read more

Came here on recommendation of the host of our guest house that we rented. It is a large place, with largely local folks dining. Slightly outside the touristy center of Sorrento (.5 Miles), but they will provide free pick-up and drop-off. Great food, good value, the fact it is mostly a local crowd should give you an idea of how good it is. We were in Sorrento only 7 days, and we went twice!!! read more

Loved the atmosphere and was so excited that there were a lot of locals. Waiter seemed bugged that I had a gluten allergy, noticed that Italians seated after us were served first, food was ok but the biggest most disappointing slight was being denied food. I ordered the artichoke and was told they did not have any because it was not artichoke season. I noticed two tables with Italians who sat down after us eating artichoke. So disappointing in a country I love! The food was mediocre but this experience definitely left a bad taste in our hearts and mouth. read more
