I ended up at La Casa del Chef by chance last night. We were trying to go somewhere else but got lost so we changed our plan and went here. What a happy little accident, we loved it! It's got a great ambiance that's very classy. If I had known, I would have dressed a little nicer. I was in jeans and a t-shirt but it was more of a dress shirt type place. That being said, the staff still treated us with the utmost class and respect. We ordered a couple bottles of wine which we delicious and reasonably priced. For a starter, we tried the chorizo in wine. It was very good and set the expectations for the rest of the meal very high. For my main course, I went with the surf and turf. The menu is very extensive with lots of different options, so it was hard to decide. My filet was cooked a perfect medium rare and the chimmichuri sauce was on point (mushrooms were another option). The lobster was cooked and seasoned wonderfully and served with a side of butter, of course. My friends had the skirt steak and mahi mahi dishes and all were very pleased. For dessert, we got the coconut flan and cheesecake with strawberry sauce. While the flan was delicious, the cheesecake stole the show. It had a delightful texture and an excellent crust which is usually a weak spot in cheesecake. Overall, I really enjoyed La Casa del Chef. This was recommended to us by the Hotel Caribe staff as a place for good rice and beans. We had a nice dinner with chicharrones, tostones and chicken cordon bleu. This is a more upscale place - we were a bit under dressed. The service was slow and reserved, and our server was exchanged for one who spoke English. The food was really good. The service was rather impressive. I dropped my fork and before I could lean up from retrieving it a waiter was placing a replacement on my placemat. Our cups were kept full which is a sti king point for me. Our food did take a really long time to come out as we waited over 30mins. and only 4 other tables were occupied when we arrived. We were in on 10/5/16 and got there about 4pm. We were the only people in the restaurant for about 30 minutes. I had the shrimp mofongo and it was delicious. It was 2 meals for me though, as the portion was larger than I could eat at one sitting. My dinner date had the fried red snapper. He loved his meal as much as I did. First of all, the map location is wrong, look for Marshall's and it's on the left of the lot. A bit dark inside but felt perfectly cozy and intimate once seated. My request for half carne half chapin empanadillas was fulfilled and was a great start - enough to share but oops, ate it all. My Lubina was absolutely the best dish I had in PR - just enough ajillo to tame the soul. The mofongo mixto was excellent but I may have OD'd on my carbs at that point. On this occasion I took my sister to La Casa Del Chef (The Chefs House) for her birthday in 6/17/14. We didn't have a full on meal because it was early. Another review noted that the location isn't the grandest and I would agree. Also what you get is very good and flavorful, but I wouldn't say that it was a good value for the $$ in general. They do bring the awesome warm garlic bread, hard to go wrong with that. Delicious. We tried a few appetizers. Then we had pastellijos (empanadas) 2 kinds - chicken and fish, yes fish. Trunkfish to be exact. Both were very good. My sister and brother went plane and had pork and chicken chunks (think they were being courteous because I was paying) with a side of platanos maduros (amarillos). That is not my thing. They ate it up. But not the veggies. I had the shrimp mofongo. I really don't like being served shrimp that has the tails. This had the tails! Shrimp were over cooked but the flavor was really good and the mofongo was not dry, which is why I usually stay away from it. My sister said the tea was divine!!! Service was great, we were there very early on a weekday and practically had the place to ourselves. I would definitely go back to try more dishes, but what we had was good, if not for the price. I always take a look on how servers run the "floor" but at this place they seems to be disorganized; SERVICE was mediocre, and did not take care of my table: 1. No water refill 2. Appetizers not delivered as expected. I told server that other tables, that came way after we arrived, were served and not mine. He said that my complaint was not true (now I'm a liar!!); but after few minutes he came and apologized because I was right and order was not placed accordingly. 3. After 1 hr 20 mins our food arrived (appetizers & dinner). Quality and taste were not as expected (based on reviews I've seen) so this place for me is overrated. This review will center largely on the service. I arrived with a party of five around 8:00 pm to a half empty restaurant. We entered through the bar entrance and were instructed to stand by the restaurant entrance, where we waited for about 10 or minutes while the restaurant remained half empty and getting emptier with departing patrons who had completed their meals. Upon being sat, they took our drink orders and returned with bread and drinks. Because of the wait time to be seated I pressed my party to order once he returned with our drinks and our wait began. After a few minutes, I started the timer on my phone. 47 minutes and 22 seconds after I started my timer, we received our food. I ordered a steak mofongo relleno. I believe locals go here to celebrate special occasions. White table cloths, fancy art for sale on the walls, great service, and excellent food. I did not feel like a king. I felt like I was in a high class diner whose wait staff took better care of the tourists and the people wearing suits than the local food connoisseurs, such as moi. The decor does not merit wearing a suit and is a little outdated.
