My friend was in town from Montreal, Canada so we decided to drive up the coast a short distance from Los Angeles. We came across this festive looking Mexican Import store that we chanced upon. We both like Mexican folk art. It was perfect. It was stocked with a wide variety of gifts and items in all different price ranges. This store was literally stocked from floor to up to ceiling with delightful finds. It turns out that the lady who helped us owns the store. She was so nice we all spoke for quite a while. My friend and i each bought a few gifts and treasures for ourselves. My favorite is this unique hand-made clay dog. I am thrilled with it. First of all I have been coming to this store for years also every year for my face painting. Have met the 3 generations of women who share there wares with pride. It is a Mexican Folklore Store not a government office. Like if you go into Dargans Irish Pub there is an Irish Flag or a Greek festival flying a Greek flag or an Italian deli flying and Italian flag. I purchased a neat tin sign, some cute and fun stickers, and was delighted to see "migajon" items being sold in there. I literally felt as though I'd bring everything down. Thankfully it was all OK. Did I mention there are TONS of items? Neat things, very interesting, but too cluttered and busy for my taste. I saw blankets & bags and other ceramic type things. There were some sale items out front, too. Although I doubt their merchandise changes often? I think you'd come here with a specific purpose (gift) in mind. That's about it. While Yelp has this listed as an art gallery, I disagree. I strolled in La Catrina one lazy Saturday afternoon and enjoyed the eclectic merchandise , from clothing to ceramics, there's something for everyone that enjoys Mexican folk art to little brick a brack, walking sticks and so much more. The owner is very engaging and we chatted a bit before leaving, my friend bought me the prettiest Sage green ceramic Turtle dish that has a lid, it reminded me of something my Grandmother had when I was growing up, so I'll treasure this always. read more
