Very well organized now with clean floors and nice inventory. In fact, best availability of products like half-and-half for example. Great variety ad plentiful. Bread from Hanisch, as well as the usual stuff. Of course the meat can't be beat. Well known for the bacon-wrapped chicken, it's the rage. Large breast that can be cross sliced and feed several, it comes stuffed with blue cheese and asparagus, mushrooms, jalapeños-- huge variety and delish! Now you might think, 'hmmm, bacon-wrapped chicken, that's easy!' But let me just say, this is the creme de la creme. Several in town wrap there chicken with bacon and it's a good pound or two of chicken, but the outside wrap and inside stuffing leaves a lot to be desired. These are fully wrapped and bursting with fresh, gourmet ingredients. Personally I love the family tips from the elder woman in the back, the kindness of the owner or manager (not sure?) helping seniors by walking the groceries around the counter and neatly handing back change, and the atmosphere of a small business. Last night we went with grilled rib eye on special for Sunday. It's been a while since we had a steak that good! Juicy, tasty, spot-on fat and no gristle. Koplin's has one local competitor and just stepped up the game.

There are two major facets of the market: a food counter and a small grocery store that specializes in Mexican/Guatemalan goods. There were some fresh items, like produce, vegetables, and cheese, but most of the stock is shelf-stable. LOTS of ingredients. I'm from California, so the vibe reminded me a lot of home, though the Guatemalan items were new and cool. Like, the frozen tamales weren't wrapped by corn husks, but with banana leaves. We were there to order food to go. Tip: it's probably best to order by phone or online, because they do make everything fresh. We had about a 30 minute wait, which was okay, because it gave us a good chance to study the grocery store. The food is well worth the wait, too. We ordered birria tacos and a birria pizza. Like I said, I'm from California, and then my husband is from New Mexico. We have had... mixed experiences in getting authentic, flavorful Mexican food in Minnesota. This stuff? Legit. Generous fillings, lots of flavor. I'm sensitive to hot spices and this was at a perfect level for me--hot to my judgment, but the kind of pleasant hot that washes away when I have some water. The tears I experienced were from sheer nostalgia is getting delicious food that reminds me of home. We will absolutely be getting food from here again!

I had the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries. It had a really good smokey but not totally saturated smokey flavor. First pulled pork sandwich I've had (I've had plenty) that had such good flavor in the meat. Their sauce was a bit runny for me, but it was still good. Can't wait to come back!

But I can tell you that whoever determined the menu and keeps everyone on track, and probably everyone at the restaurant put a little love into the place and a lot of love into their coworkers. You CAN taste the difference when people are happy. We went with an order of 3 large shrimp for each of us, and a half chicken and ribs with coleslaw and sweet potatoe fries. The shrimp were incredible! The size! The juiciness, the ability to get every bit of meat out of the tail! Everything about these was everything that I wanted. I couldn't believe that one serving of just 3 was so filling! (I think you would need 6 Red Lobster butterfly shrimp to equal the size of one but you cannot compare the taste as these are peel & eat.) Then I opened the protein box and realized that I had made the embarrassing mistake of not ordering a barbecue sauce. Humph. I think that should not have been such an easy mistake to make on their site. Thankfully, both of us like grilled food without dripping sauces and ... OMG ... We were not disappointed in the food! The ribs were like eating a meat candy. They were such a joy to hold the bone and just lightly pull the tender sweet meat off. There was barely any fat. The spice rub brought out the juices from deep inside the meat but only let them sit on the meat and inside the skin. The chicken was amazing! The dark meat practically ran juices down the front of our shirts as we bit into it, the same way that sweet corn does. The white meat was so juicy it was like the typical dark meat that most people achieve on Thanksgiving. Now, the coleslaw was one of the blandest I've tasted but I figured if you do have one of the spicier barbecue sauces you might be using it as a foil. Helping you to calm your mouth's fire down with the dressing. Of course, fries don't travel well and sweet potatoe are no different. But they were absolutely everything I expected. They were delicious!! I am having surgery in April and trying to see how to ship this food to me after that now. ;)
