A gem of a place that I stumbled upon after a late night tennis session in the area. I was looking for a spot for a quick bite, and I can happily say that I was satisfied with my food and experience at La Chiva! I scanned the large menu for an option to refuel and opted for the steak tacos, which were 3 for $12. They were stuffed with protein and topped with a tomato and onion salsa. I also couldn't resist trying a fried pastry or two with a wide variety of options they had available, so I ended up ordering a chicken pastel and beef yucca empanada. The staff here were really friendly and the service was very quick. Everything about this place was casual and efficient. This placed seemed like where all the locals went! In the heart of the busy area, La Chiva has plenty of nearby street parking along with a small personal lot. There is ample indoor and outdoor seating. My friends and I came on a late Saturday night. We were happily surprised to see a line of other customers already here. Their business is much deserved for all of their hard work. It was my first time trying a Colombian hot dog and I was not disappointed. It's huge and topped with pineapple, coleslaw, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and crushed potato chips. It may sound overboard but your tastebuds will be over the moon happy. I moved to East Boston oct 1 I'm irish and Italian and can pass as Spanish or columbian except i don't speak the language. anyway la chiva is 2 min walk from my home found it" on my first day i moved.Me being 6mo pregnant are picky with food but in love with there poliltos except im always charged 16 for 4 and i see it on menu. But one day i was charged 21 i just paid did not ? it . I went last evening bought 4 as usual paid 16 gave them good tip as always and got my favorite sauce. went again tonight had a male i never seen wait on me told me 20. Happened upon this place while in East Boston and hungry enough for a snack. First time I tried food here it was raining heavily as I was hungry. The customer service here is great. They always try to get your order as fast as they can. I've only had one bad incident, where I ordered a lot of things to go, and a few things were missing in my bags. That's partly my fault for not checking the bags, but it happens. The food is great but their chicken empanada/patelles is not seasoned to my favor. Im not sure what Colombian restaurants others here have eaten at, but this is a bottom of the barrel place, the most of the food is dry and flavorless, arepas are dry(over cooked) and the empanadas tasted like they sat around for an hour in a grease bath, chuzos were dry and flavorless, even the potatoes were soggy and over cooked. Prices increase on a whim, the folks working the counter are rude, and have no issues with taking an order from "spanish" people and skipping ahead of you (too bad they are ignorant enough to think others don't speak spanish). I would love to give this place no stars but that is not an option. I was putting my order in last night at the counter I asked the cashier how much the total was mid order just to ensure I had enough cash on me (it is cash Only) ordered a few more empanadas, thought for a second. My husband grabbed my hand off the counter as I went to grab cash from my purse and we both witnessed a fairly large cockroach crawl right across the counter.
