I would love to give this place no stars but that is not an option. I was putting my order in last night at the counter I asked the cashier how much the total was mid order just to ensure I had enough cash on me (it is cash Only) ordered a few more empanadas, thought for a second. My husband grabbed my hand off the counter as I went to grab cash from my purse and we both witnessed a fairly large cockroach crawl right across the counter. We both saw it, I'm sure the cashier witnessed it, I looked up and asked her to cancel the order and walked out immediately with my family in tow. I understand restaurants deal with pests but if there are roaches crawling around in a busy environment clearly they need to exterminate. read more

The Picada is not worth it here don't waste your time. Online it says it's 14 but when you pick it up it's actually 25. For the amount of food they give you it's not worth it. They give you the amount of a regular dish. Pay 25 dollars at another place where they will give you a decent amount of food. read more

I have seen, tasted and been to better spots in East Boston. This hole might be open until late, 1am in the morning late but the food is super greasy and unhealthy. Everything is hard, tasteless and stiff after 9pm. I would not recommend anything out of their solid food menu. A juice, ice cream or sweet maybe but the rest of the food will destroy your stomach. read more

Went there for the $1 scoop icecream with some friends. Place smelled a little funky. Lady was nice who gave us icecream and rang us up. Never had the food but maybe one day. Apparently they are open really late so might be making a trip there after a drinking night. read more

The chicken there is dehydrated (when you see it you'll know what i mean) but good and crispy even though theres barely any meat in the bones. I love Colombian food so when I'm in the area and looking for a quick bite to go, this is where I like to drop in. I don't particularly like to sit in as it is small and compact (it would be great if they had more seating arrangements) but prices are reasonable and food is pretty authentic. I was surprised to see not that many people have reviewed this place since it is an Eastie icon but then again, the people who frequent this place are definitely not the yelping kind. Contrary to the other super happy reviews this is not a super cute dance party kind of place. A "La Chiva" is an open air bus that is typical of Colombia and hence this is Colombian fast food. The food is premade and dumped into bins. You can also order some things to be made but late nights its the bins for you. The food is OLD and tastes stale. The only time it is worth visiting is late night after drinking and you don't care what the food tastes like. The clientele is SKETCHY, case in point, I was here after going to Cosmopolitan on a Monday night and a guy pulled a gun and the staff called 911. THIS HAPPENS A LOT. The also don't speak a lot of English so be prepared to dust off your high school Spanish. read more

This is really the best place to go after a night of dancing and drinking. The food is greasy enough to satisfy the drunken craving you may have but not so greasy as to make you sick. And their picture menu with numbers makes it easy to pick out what you want. And they're open until 3 or 4. I'm not too sure. I always get the pupusas although my friends usually get their other dishes which taste just as yummy. And they have these little redskin potatoes that they fry whole and are so yummy! The food is OK. The pictures are misleading because the sandwiches appear a lot bigger then they really are, about half the size. The biggest problem I have with this place is that they don't take credit cards. I ordered my $6 sandwich, fully expecting that a restaurant like this in the year 2014 would have the ability to take a card. Needless to say I didnt bring cash and I had to withdraw $20 bucks from the shady looking atm machine they have in the dining area and incur a atm fee. My $6 sandwich became a $9 sandwich and of course the lady accepting the cash looks at you like shes expecting you to put $1 in the tip bucket, not jar, so conveniently placed on the highest spot on the counter. read more

I have been meaning to write a review for this place. I was going to give them 5 stars but unfortunately my last two visits caused me to change my mind and to write this review. La Chiva used to be a great, amazing wonderful spot. The food is good and cheap. Really good for late night. The last two times I went the new people at the counter were horrible. This was my experience the last time I went in. I ordered 6 of the already prepared chicharrones cut up. I watched the lady pick out 5 and give it to the cook to cut up. She thought I wouldn't notice because they are being cut into pieces. I said I ordered 6. She said she was giving me 5 (and over course charging me for 6) because "they are big." They sell food per piece not weight. The manager agreed with me. I'm amazed that she wasn't going to tell me but just decided she would charge me for 6 and give me 5. I also want to add that asking to chop them up is a normal thing. In fact, I only started asking after all the previous other ladies asked me and everyone else that I saw if they wanted it cut up. I may have actually considered being charged for 5 because they were big but I felt cheated when she just thought she would trick me. I'm giving two stars instead of one because in the end the manager fixed it but it shouldn't have had to come to that. This place used to offer to cook it fresh and include some small arepa now you have to watch them to make sure they aren't cheating you. Horrible! read more
