I went here with a small gear that needed some machining. They accepted the job right as I entered, and I was asked to wait while the machinist did his work with the gear. About 5 minutes later, the machinist came back with the gear modified to my exact specifications. When I asked how much I owed him, he said it was on the house. The owner was very nice and told me that I needed someone to input my drawing into a computer. That way he could help me. I thought I could just show up with a drawing and have it scanned, then made or cut into the shape I needed. It's a little more complex and costly than I thought. Came here based upon the other reviews, but left extremely disappointed. I showed up with some pre-cut aluminum parts, and asked if they would be able to weld a few edges. The man at the front desk kindly said he'd call his welding guy for a referral. He called me later that week to tell me that it would be $1,000+ for a small 4 inch long tee joint weld. I declined the offer, and when I went back to pick up the parts, the front desk guy said "good luck finding someone who can do it for less; you won't. You're better off just taking our offer." Ended up taking it to a welding shop in Santa Monica for $20. read more

I need help fitting a wheel to a motor, purchases separately for a custom project. I'm fairly mechanically inclined but couldn't get the wheel to fit the hub to fit the axle. I went to BMS for help. I got a call a few days later that my wheel was done - at no charge. WHAT? When does that happen? It turns out they were able to reconfigure the hub/axle and didn't have to modify the actual wheel as originally expected. I tried to give them a small amount of money as a thank you, but I couldn't even get them to take it! Will definitely be back when this project requires further assistance! read more

I stopped in to see if they could machine four aluminum leg extensions for a pedal steel guitar that I had recently purchased. After speaking with Masis, he suggested an online supplier where I could purchase the parts that I needed without any additional machining necessary. He looked up the part, and took a screen shot with my phone so that I would have the necessary information when I got home. Within two days of ordering, the parts arrived and have worked perfectly ever since. Masis could have easily said nothing and done the work for me, at a considerably higher price than what I paid. Instead, he was totally honest, as well as interested in finding me the most cost effective solution. I came to BMS with a piece of extruded aluminum and crude hand sketch of what I needed. I was originally expecting it to be cut with a band saw and drilled with a drill press. Masis ended up running it through his CNC mill at a very reasonable rate with excellent turn-around time. read more

Usually I don't reviews on Yelp. But I was treated with such curtesy that this had to be said. Some of my vintage steel maces were damaged in the Malibu fire. I could not get the screws out of them to repair. So I went to BMS, not knowing if they could help. In less than ten minutes they had the screws out and wouldn't accept a dollar for their effort. I am new to Yelp and I usually don't write reviews but I felt obligated to write something to appreciate this guy because his machine shop saved us a lot of money. A small piece of our alignment machine broke and it became inoperative. Replacement part was only available online and it would take 10 days to get. I found this shop and took broken part and explained our situation. He made the part in less than 3 hours at half price of the new one and I must say, it even looked better than original one. I needed some fairly unusual and very precise work to be done to resurrect 4 cast-aluminum portholes for a sailboat restoration project. The tasks required disassembly, machining replacement parts and fabrication of repair components for a broken bracket that I thought might prove impossible. Just recently I sold my mothers house and acquired a set of fireplace tools. A brass screw that held the stem or pipe for the poker and brush in place had rusted and couldn't be removed. I searched for two months looking for a machine shop that could remove the screw. Finally I contacted Masis, the owner of the Burbank Machine Shop. he said to come in and he'd take a look at it. As soon as he took one look within less than a minute he put it on a vice grip covered it and removed the brass screw. Cleaned the stem and I was on my way. I called up BMS and spoke to Masis regarding shortening a drill press column (i.e., cutting down a 4" steel tube). He said he would likely be able to take care of it on the spot when I came by. That's precisely what he did. First, he replaced the horizontal band saw blade with a finer tooth one. He cut off the requested length from the tube and then proceeded to deburr it.
