While it follows the form of apertivo, primi, segundi, dolci, this is not traditional Italian cuisine but what I've seen termed as "Italian contemporary cuisine." That means world class, innovative food. And we loved it. Simone Ferrigno, the manager, greeted us when we arrived and seated us at an elegantly laid out table. We ordered wine and our food, and the show began with beautiful dish after beautiful dish. And fabulous wines. We chatted with the German couple at the next table who had ordered the vegan tasting menu and they were in heaven. Alas I cannot for the life of me find the receipt with the names of the dishes we ordered. If I find it, I'll update my review. I'll just say this, exquisite food, world-class service in a beautiful ambience. After we had paid our bill (thank goodness the dollar is up relative to the Euro) and we started walking away, Simone ran after us to ask how our experience was and to thank us for our patronage. Note: A reservation is essential at L'Evangelista. I just noticed that Yelp has two Euro symbols to indicate the price is moderate. I'd actually give it four Euro symbols. L'Evangelista is not for you if you're on a tight a budget.

Just what I was expecting in Italy!…read more Liked the space. The kitchen was literally right up front when you walked in. We were lucky to get a seat on a Wednesday night in early October around 8:15. After us, it was all reservations and no walk-ins. They had an English menu and fully bilingual staff, which made everything easier. Very gluten-free friendly, to the point of bringing of GF roll without asking. It was nice and crusty. Explored the wines of the region; loved the Santa Sofia, Valpolicella Ripasso. Nice, smooth, with a good blend of fruit and acid. Started with the steak tartare; split between two plates, with one including the glutenous cracker - appreciated that. Also appreciated that the seasonings for the tartar (pesto, mustard) were on the side and could add as wanted. Pesto was a great topping - never thought of that. Next was the pumpkin risotto. Somewhat surprisingly, it was not cooked as long as we would typically do it back in the states. It was just shy of crunchy - it would stick to your teeth. The pumpkin cream sauce was nice, but a little bland. Could have used sage, salt and pepper at a minimum, and maybe some fennel. The mains included beef cheek, which for us was essentially a pot roast type of dish. The meat was rich and succulent and fell apart at the touch. It came with celeriac foam and celeriac fried strips. The strips were a really interesting textural complement, but the foam, not so much. The other was pork shank, that was cut into three large pieces with a crispy, sweet fried skin, with tender pork underneath, that melted in your mouth. It came with sauteed shredded cabbage. The beef cheeks came with very hot, potato cubes/small wedges. They were well cooked but bland - needed at minimum salt and pepper. The pork came with a side of vegetables - mushrooms, zucchini, carrots - that was in a rich thyme and butter sauce. The aqua frizzante, was also very tasty.

On our first visit, we wanted a full lunch, so even though the cicchetti on display at the front of the store looked alluring and delightful, we asked for a table inside, which we were promptly given. We were all set to order a bottle of wine, but my husband spied "Verona Spritz" on the menu and we quickly pivoted. For my main, I went with their bigoli cacio e pepe and my husband ordered the pappardelle ragu. The Verona Spritz was surprising - crisp but warm, with an herby undertone from the (giant) sprig of fresh mint. The bigoli was perfectly cooked (I have a fondness for thick, chewy noodles) and the sauce was creamy without being too cloying or thick. My husband absolutely loved his pappardelle pasta, with the meatiness and cheesiness and overall flavors merging into a flavor explosion in his face. We were admittedly a bit bummed we weren't able to sample the cicchetti, so of course we went back for a second visit. On that visit we ordered the cicchetti and wine pairing, which was a great deal and so SO tasty. We were served six cicchetti each, and had three wines paired per two cicchetti. The staff did a great job of keeping an eye on us, only stopping by to pour the next bottle when we were ready to move on to the next bite. Each wine was delicious and easy to drink. They did serve two whites and a red; I'm not typically a white wine fan but these were incredible - to the point where I took pictures just in case i can find them locally (or get them imported.) We highly recommend this spot for either a full meal or cicchetti and wine. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming - they had a lot of locals coming in and out both times we were there - and the amount of food you get for the price you pay is a deal.

They do have some pasta and specials of the day, but we all had pizza, of which there is a rather wide selection to choose from. I had the melanzane which was definitely the most delicious eggplant pizza I've ever had. My husband had the "Trentino" with had wild mushrooms, Emmentaler and speck. And my son had the Capricciosa (mix of various things including prosciutto, olives, artichokes, etc.) I tasted them all and they were all great. House wine: $12.50 for a liter. Awesome deal, very drinkable and went well with the pizza. Service was attentive and efficient. I hope to return while I am staying in Verona. It's a neighborhood gem with extremely reasonable prices, away from the tourist bustle of the centro historico.

It was probably the worst dish we had in Italy. It came out lukewarm, the pasta was mushy as it had been overcooked, and it just lacked proper flavor. The worst part is after we paid the bill and we're walking back to the hotel, the lasagna struck again and the lady had to double time it back to the hotel and the toilet. Terrible food poisoning. This is off the list.
