Great food, great tortas the salsa and chips were great and the horchata was so good I definitely recommend

    Asada tacos

We got the asada tacos and grilled asada plate. The food was so good I went back two days later for the exact same thing and was even craving it again later that night. I'm afraid to try anything else because the tacos are so good but everything else looks amazing. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu.

(Carry out) Left box: vegan bean-and-zucchini pupusa. Middle box: carne asada Right box: cheese pupusas.

Very good service and the person who took my order was very patient with me. She understood that I cannot do dairy (lactose intolerant) and when I ordered a plain bean pupusa, she offered to see if the kitchen would do one with zucchini added to it if I was interested-- I was, and the kitchen said yes -- I was so surprised and happy (and they were delicious, FYI). The people who were eating in the restaurant all seemed laid back and satisfied, and the music was nice and upbeat (I'm not terribly worldly in my music tastes, but I did recognize 3 different hits which I've danced to in my zumba classes...!) and I enjoyed listening while I waited for my to go order. Below is description of the carryout boxes we got. (Carry out) Left box: warm kind of salsa, slaw, vegan bean-and-zucchini pupusa. (my goodness the vegan pupusa was AMAZING and FLAVORFUL -- I was so happy with it!) Middle box: carne asada w/ onions, rice, salad w/ radish and cucumber and queso fresco, and a container of beans and of pico de gallo. (The carne asada was flavorful -- I tried some of the salad and cheese and it was good too.) Right box: warm kind of salsa, slaw, and cheese pupusas. (I tried a bite of one and it was pretty good, reminds me of a cheese quesadilla.) We also got pineapple / piña agua frescas which were delicious and sweet, I'm positive they used real pineapple juice it was sooo good! Who wants soda when you can do this? (Not much healthier but arguably more wholesome...?)

The Pupusa Special Platter. Great food.

I had an amazing experience today! The pupusas were truly authentic better than the ones I've had in Miami.

Decided to go with a 2 item combo plate with a chicharron pupusa, a chicken "enchilada," rice and beans, and added a side of fried plantains. All of the food was hot, fresh, and tasty. The pupusa and plantains were both cooked to perfection. The enchilada was not the traditional Spanish style you typically picture, but a crispy Central American style. I wasn't entirely sure how to eat it as the shell was super crispy and there was some liquid oozing out, but the flavor and texture combo was still enjoyable. Overall nice portions and more than left me with a happy, full belly. Will definitely come back whenever I am stopping through Rifle and hope I get the same server!

The parking lot was empty but I was people on the patio to the side of the restaurant. Turns out there is parking in the back. The hostess who ended up being our waitress was wonderful. She was great with the girls and was informative when it came to suggestions. My wife and I both had the combo. I got a corn tamale, Loroco and cheese pupusa and the chicken pastelito. I actually took a bite of the rice to kick off my dish and I was blown away. Normally rice is an after thought and when I tried this I couldn't wait to try the main dishes. All of it was wonderful. I couldn't have been happier. My favorite was the pupusa while my wife loved the pastelito most. The tamale was made differently than the ones I usually get which are Mexican. This one was so good but I'm a fan of cornbread and it tasted very much like that. I'd be tempted to go back again soon when I'm passing through town. Such a warm place with excellent food.

Taqueria El Nopal -- Glenwood Springs, CO…read more If you're looking for authentic Mexican food where the locals actually eat, put Taqueria El Nopal on your list. This is definitely off the tourist path, and when we walked in on a Tuesday, the restaurant was filled with locals, always a good sign. It's tucked into a strip mall, but don't let that fool you. Inside, it's colorful, casual, and full of character, with beautiful original artwork painted on the benches and tables. You order at the counter, and we happened to visit on Tuesday, when fajitas were the special. The portion was generous, and they were absolutely delicious. My daughter had the quesadillas, my son ordered the steak platter, and everything we tried was fresh, flavorful, and very well prepared. The only thing I wasn't particularly impressed with was the salsa bar. But honestly, that was a small downside compared with how good everything else was. This is exactly the kind of unassuming, hole-in-the-wall local restaurant I love discovering, authentic food, lots of personality, generous portions, and a place where the community actually goes to eat. If you're visiting Glenwood Springs, skip some of the touristy spots and make a stop at Taqueria El Nopal. Definitely worth seeking out! It's on the pricy side because for the three of us with no alcohol it was $90.
