We rolled into this place late on a Tuesday hungry from hiking the Maroon Bells. The food was great but not exceptional. I had a fish taco and Jamaica agua fresca. The hot salsa that came with it was ok. The taco was tasty and the juice as well. My friend got a chicken taco and a side of rice and beans. She wanted mild salsa and really liked the 2 they gave her. The tacos were on tiny corn tortillas but the meat portion size was generous. The service was slow, and no one smiled. But that was probably due to the amount of to go orders they had. It seemed like they were doing a lot of business. The ambiance was pretty basic. But that shouldn't matter. Very good service and the person who took my order was very patient with me. She understood that I cannot do dairy (lactose intolerant) and when I ordered a plain bean pupusa, she offered to see if the kitchen would do one with zucchini added to it if I was interested-- I was, and the kitchen said yes -- I was so surprised and happy (and they were delicious, FYI). The people who were eating in the restaurant all seemed laid back and satisfied, and the music was nice and upbeat (I'm not terribly worldly in my music tastes, but I did recognize 3 different hits which I've danced to in my zumba classes...!) and I enjoyed listening while I waited for my to go order. Below is description of the carryout boxes we got. (Carry out) Left box: warm kind of salsa, slaw, vegan bean-and-zucchini pupusa. (my goodness the vegan pupusa was AMAZING and FLAVORFUL -- I was so happy with it!) Middle box: carne asada w/ onions, rice, salad w/ radish and cucumber and queso fresco, and a container of beans and of pico de gallo. (The carne asada was flavorful -- I tried some of the salad and cheese and it was good too.) Right box: warm kind of salsa, slaw, and cheese pupusas. (I tried a bite of one and it was pretty good, reminds me of a cheese quesadilla.) We also got pineapple / piña agua frescas which were delicious and sweet, I'm positive they used real pineapple juice it was sooo good! Who wants soda when you can do this? The food is good, I will say that. However the attitude ain't it. As I was ordering the cashier was answering me rudely and making disgusting faces. This is a fine example of Salvadoran cuisine in Carbondale. We thoroughly enjoyed two Pupusa Special dinners and two true Tamarindo drinks here for under $40 including tax and a tip. This "sampler" included a tomato sauce to dip the various things into. Everything was cooked fresh for us. Order at the counter, wait a few minutes, they bring it to you and enjoy. This place is a MUST if you're anywhere near Carbondale! My friends have been recommending me this place for a long time (we live in Las Vegas so, while in Vail, I just had to go try it) and I must say I'm glad I listened to them. Their food is really darn good and it's the most authentic Salvadorian food you can get in the states and their service is pretty good too. I highly recommend La Fogata, even to my vegan friends (they have a great variety of options, just let them know or ask for special mods). Amazing authentic food and really good service. This restaurant does not have waiters, you order at the counter. That is fine normally, but here you pay a high price for food and get very small servings. My steak burrito plate had 1/4 cup of rice and 2 tablespoons of beans, both looked really neat as if you were going to one of those small food restaurants you have seen on TV. The burrito was filled with half rice and was about a third of the size you would normally be served at a Mexican restaurant that has an "order/ pay here" counter. The other thing you should know is it appears to be a daycare or the workers have their kids playing and screaming near the dining area, one of them approached me and stared at me while hanging from the Coke refrigerator that was behind me. Overpriced, small portions, use of fillers (rice) to save on costs of beef/chicken. read more

Whoa! La Fogata is really a great find in Bonedale. We met some friends there for dinner on Friday evening and were blown away in every aspect. The food was authentic and outstandingly good, service was friendly and efficient and prices were beyond reasonable. Between the 4 of us we sampled lots of the menu, three papusas, fried plantains, yuca patties, an asado plate, a quesadilla, burrito and more. Everything was killer and the 4 of us ate for a total of 80 dollars, tax and tip included. We are tough critics on restaurants in the valley but this is a real keeper. read more
