Our server didn't seem happy to wait on us. Bread was provided, but no oil. When I asked I was given oil, table salt, and a bottle of vinegar. No tap water available. Ordered a soda and bottle of water. Water came quick. Sprite as an afterthought five minutes later. Food was fresh and delicious. Nice portion sizes. Seems to be popular with locals and tourists. I ate here at the recommendation of my hotel, which was a block away. The food was okay - nothing special - my linguine pesto was entirely average, perhaps a bit salty. Service was average, perhaps a bit negligent. They forgot to bring my bread - I tried to get their attention several times, unsuccessfully. When I finally had the opportunity to ask for it, the server brought it, but by that time, I had almost finished with my pasta (it had gone cold as I waited). She said my bread was sitting on the counter (inside). Well, okay, but it didn't make it to my table. I asked what they had for vegetables and ordered broccoli. What came was almost just a mash of leaves. No florets to be seen. It was bitter, no oil was offered. She said this was a type of broccoli - but it was overcooked, whatever it was. Given that I had to wait a long time to order, the service was not great - customers seemed like an afterthought. I opted to sit outside in the fresh air, but kept smelling rotten fruit. Half way through the meal, I noticed that the outside tables were adjacent to a garbage bin on the street. It also didn't help that through the entire meal I had to listen to a teen at the next table scream into her phone (on speaker). But that's not the restaurant's fault, I digress! I would not return. This restaurant was the worst place l've ever been to. We arrived at the time of our reservation and were told the restaurant was fully booked. We told them we had a reservation. The hostess immediately went to the back to talk to the manager. The manager came out saying there was an issue with the computer system and that our reservation was cancelled (They came back speaking Italian-even though they spoke English when we first got there-which I can understand but can't speak). We asked if they could place us in the empty tables, but they apparently were reserved. At no point did they ask us or did we tell them the name of the reservation. How could they know our reservation wasn't booked without knowing the name of the reservation? How could the waitress forget how to speak English in 3 minutes? This was our first meal in Rome the night we flew in and we had such a great meal. My friend and I spontaneously walked into La Fraschetta Romanesca for a late dinner after briefly browsing the menu outside. We sat downstairs. The ambiance of the restaurant was cozy and warm and pretty much exactly what I'd expect an Italian restaurant in Italy to look like. I had a white pizza with mozzarella, sausage, and truffle oil. My friend had the tripe in tomato sauce. We shared fried pumpkin flower for a small appetizer. The fried pumpkin flower came in one piece, so we split it in half. We ordered it because we had never tried it before. It had melted cheese inside and tasted like a cheesy tempura. Not bad! My friend's tripe dish was very good. The tripe was really well prepared and tender, and the tomato sauce in the dish was really fresh. My pizza was amazing! Not only was the truffle oil absolutely delicious but the sausage was also really tasty. The whole combination of ingredients was perfect. This was definitely one of the best pizzas I had ever had. I finished 7/8 of it. (My friend had a slice!) Definitely set the standard for the rest of our Italy trip! The downstairs area where we were seated reminded me of my grandfathers wine cellar with big wine barrels used as decor making you feel cozy and at home. The menu is not extensive but with a good selection to choose from starters to dessert. The pasta dishes, which I highly recommend, are all home made and always cooked al dente and to perfection. This has to be the absolute worst place to eat in Rome. I'm really shocked there were such great reviews on Yelp and really let down, because the evening before we used Yelp to find an excellent restaurant. If I had to describe this place in one word: Gross. Or Run!!! We ordered a few things that I thought would at least be decent- the Rigatoni was so al dente it tasted like wet chalk. A box of Mac and Cheese would've been 5 stars compared to this. The Mixed Italian salad was lettuce, canned corn, canned black olives and large chunks of under ripened tomatoes. But I've saved the best for last, the Lamb- Roman Style. I've included a picture of this dish so you can make your own judgement. Yes, it looks like dog food. Unbelievably good. My husband and I stumbled across this culinary gem while wandering around our hotel at night (which was located near the Spanish steps). We are so incredibly fortunate that we did! Signs you know this place is good: the menu is handwritten, the meat that you can order (e.g. prosciutto, salami, etc.) is hanging right from the ceiling and they slice it right before your eyes and serve it to you, and there are many locals who live in the area that come here to eat. We had the homemade gnocchi and the bufalina pizza. Both indescribably good and fresh and authentic. This is what Italian food should taste like! The house red wine was also especially fantastic.
