We were staying right around the corner in Trastevere and noticed that there were some restaurants on the side streets rather than the main drag that had cute outdoorsy settings. The other one didn't take card, so we landed on Il Tarallo, and thank God we did. The service was incredible- it wasn't like other restaurants who consider Americans less worthy customer (I know service culture is different here, but still!). There were plenty of menu options that looked good, and the house white wine was a good starter. They refilled our bread multiple times as well. We started with the seafood "salad," and everything on it was divine. For entrees, I ordered the chicken dish which was SO good, and my husband ordered the oxtail stew. He liked it, but after seeing some of the pasta dishes at other tables, he said he wished he had gone with that instead because those looked delicious. They had lots of dessert options as well. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place while walking around in Trastevere. We had no reservations but got a table outside in the cute area in front of the restaurant for dinner at around 8:30pm. This place was perfect-- it was located in a more quiet and quaint street, away from the loud and vibrant main squares of Trastevere. It felt like a very small business that was not too touristy. Our server was very nice and got our orders for food and wine shortly after our arrival, making a little conversation with us in Italian, which we appreciated. For food we ordered: Warm Seafood Salad: this was delicious! It came with generous amounts of squid, octopus, shrimp, and mussels covered in a subtle lemon and olive oil dressing with some carrots and celery for texture. It felt so simple, fresh, and healthy. I appreciated how this dish really elevated the flavor of seafood without masking it-- you could taste the seafood but without it being fishy. Highly recommend this for an appetizer! Very refreshing and perfect for the warmer weather. Pollo, mortadella fritta e caciocavallo: I got this for my main dish. It consisted of cubes of juicy, tender chicken that were covered with a fine layer of cheese and crispy mortadella. The creamy cheese and umami crunch from the mortadella were delicious. This came with a sauce that tasted like a buttery chicken stock and made the dish feel comforting and nourishing. I paired it with a side salad that had fresh veggies, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and salt. Very good! Oxtail stew: my boyfriend ordered this for his main dish and he loved it! I tried a bite and was amazed at how well prepared this was. The oxtail came with a tomato based stew that was thick and rich, while the meat itself was so tender it came off the bone without difficulty and dissolved in your mouth without much chewing. One of the best dishes we had while in Italy! It tasted really healthy and nourishing as well....jt made me want to stay in Europe forever! Overall, we loved this place. Every dish was delicious and felt so homemade, the service was warm, and the ambiance was very romantic. This was my favorite restaurant during our trip to Italy. I will 100% be coming back to try some of the pasta and desserts too since the dishes we had were all amazing... I have no doubt everything else is fantastic here. I ate here 8 months ago and I still think about the meal my wife and I had. I feel drawn, compelled, obligated to leave this review. The food in phenomenal and the wine selection was perfect for the foods. You're not getting gouged nor upsold on anything. The servers looked like they were either the owners or related. They argued while having a friendly chat and added warmth and coziness to the place while staying on top of our table and ensuring we had a great meal. I want to go to Rome just to return. An incredible dinner to remember right in the heart of Trastevere. We came on a warm summer night and the area was full of ambiance, energy, and atmosphere. The small candle lit tables here make it a romantic escape away from the hustle and bustle of more touristy areas of Rome. The owners are extremely attentive, polite, and even more impressive appeared to speak 4 or 5 languages, treating each guest with personalized service surely to make their dinner a positive memory. I ate here over a year ago and still have fond memories! of our delicious dinner. I was with my brother and niece and it was one our last nights after a 10 day trip, and we could not have had chosen a better place.The food was fabulous as was the staff. The location, like many in Trastevere, is tucked away on a skinny street but not difficult to find. We had the Carbonara, Sea Bass rolls and the Veal strips with rocket and cherry tomatoes. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the ham was not too sally. Not having Carbonara prior, cant compare it but was very yummy. The sea bass rolls were quite creative, very light and quite nice. She made the perfect wine selection for us and the eggplant Parmesan (her mother's recipe) was the best I've ever had!! I'm still thinking about it! This restaurant is called "Il Tarallo Allegro" (not "It"). Exquisite, fresh and gourmet homemade food at an off-the-beaten-track Trastevere restaurant! My family ate here twice during our stay, we loved the food here so much. Order from the specials of the day, especially the traditional Roman and Pugliese dishes as well as any of the homemade pasta. The fresh fish is superb. Desserts like Tiramisu and Torta della Nonna and Granite al Limone are all homemade and some of the best we've had. Service is excellent -- be sure to ask for advice on how to put your meal together from the caring owner, he will not steer you wrong!
