It pains me to leave a bad review because there was so much potential. First impressions, the place is smaller and dimly lit, so it had a quaint feel. There was no one at the front to immediately greet me so I walked towards the back to the bar and waited for the "bartender". Every seat at the bar was taken so she understandably asked that I take a 2-seat table. I sat down and looked over the menu for a few as I noticed she wasn't just the bartender, she was serving the entire place... at dinner time. She was the SWEETEST but had to move pretty quickly to help everyone. I was so impressed by her! I ordered a 3-item board with duck pate' and two cheeses that she suggested and a wine flight to wash it down with :-). The pate' had a meatier consistency than I expected so I wouldnt pick that one again. Everything was pretty good... until I sipped my red wine blend (from the wine flight) which had "crystals" at the bottom that I had to spit out. yikes. I also found the food and flight to be a bit pricey. They sell wine here too and some bottles were very reasonably priced (unlike Sonoma Cellars up King's street). There is a sign behind the bar for happy hour Wed-Fri 4-7p $5 small plates, house wine, and craft beer. I'd planned to rate the place 3 out of 5 stars until I went to the bathroom. The picture says it all. It was dark out and there is a window above the toilet that had no curtain! And to top it off there is a light outside the window so I could also clearly see outside. Rigel was an excellent server and made sure we had a wonderful dinner. Explained absolutely everything on the menu, provided great recommendations. And the pours were GENEROUS. I'd go back in a heartbeat and in fact i will the next time i need some wine with my cheese or vice versa. Everything tasted great and it was surprisingly affordable, that said we found the menu to be a bit limited, but i think that is intentional and reasonable given the heavy focus on delicious charcuterie options. read more

This place is super cute! I stopped in here while exploring Old Town Alexandria for a quick glass of wine and a cheese board. Great wine selection and really friendly and knowledgeable staff as well! Decor was also very cute, and I noticed it was very clean. The cheese board we got was AMAZING. Tucked in the middle of old town Alexandria, this is a fascinating place to enjoy a nice glass of wine, a meat and cheese board, and quiet intimate time with your party or date. I had their happy hour red wine (a Pinot Noir, I think), very tasty and filling. Our cheese board consisted of the pick 3 which consisted of patch 13 and buttermilk bleu cheeses (from PA and WI) and coppa meat (an Italian cured ham). Patch 13 felt like a soft Parmesan (tangy, mild) and the buttermilk blue is a soft bleu cheese. Coppa had the right amount of saltiness to go with the cheeses and wine. Also comes with crispy baguette, mini pickles, sliced French apples, and a chutney. It's like they transport you to the streets of France with this fancy cuisine and wine. Oh oui! The dining area is seat-yourself and they have a bar where you can see the meat and cheeses being cut. Kitchen is behind the bar where they prepare entrees and hot plates. Quiet atmosphere with a nice radio playing, you can come in and get lost into translation and satisfaction. I approve this place, bonjour and merci! read more

What a lovely little gem in Old Town! We were there to shop a couple wedding boutiques and found this place based on Yelp ratings. We ordered a 5-option meat and cheese board, the squash risotto, and mussels - overall were all pretty good, with the meat and cheese board being the favorite. The risotto was cooked well - what you would expect in flavoring. The mussels were good, but could be plated differently, it came in a deep bowl, so most of the mussels weren't sitting in the broth and we had to dig from the bottom. Typically this dish comes in a shallow bowl. The meat and cheese tray was delicious. We ordered a pate, prosciutto, fennel salami, and 2 cheeses Pleasant Ridge Reserve and St. Stephen. Both were so delicious and the Pleasant Ridge was so nutty and rich. We tried very hard to order a block to take home but they don't sell by weight - kind of disappointing, but I guess we'll be back! One caveat is the staffing. There was only 1 person serving + 1 person in the kitchen. The restaurant filled quickly for lunch and wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. Had a wonderful visit on a blustery Sunday afternoon. The three of us shared a five item board consisting of Duck Prociutto, Iberico ham, a creamy blue, and a couple other cheeses that escape me. We all enjoyed a wine flight and then ordered the mixed olives, pimento cheese, chicken liver and gigante beans......and another flight of wines. Even though there was only one server for a consistently busy room, she handled it fine. We were not rushed and had a long, meandering, relaxing visit. Excellent wine and cheese bar. I went on a Thursday night, which happens to be the vintage wine night. They uncork a vintage wine and the lucky eaters (and drinkers) get to enjoy a wine they normally would never get to try. Eating alone, I asked if the 3 or 5 item plate would be better. They recommend 3, which seems small, but is very rich. It was enough. Flavorful and rich beyond belief. I highly recommend the duck prosciutto. It was intense. Try this place! read more

My friend and I shared the five item meat & cheese platter as well as the stinging nettle fettuccine with duck meatballs. We tried the rabbit pate and duck prosciutto, which were both made in house. The sopressata did not disappoint either. We had a hard cheese (seven sisters) and a buttermilk bleu cheese. The board also had a spicy chutney, breads, dried figs/apricots and pickled vegetables. The stinging nettle fettuccine had a nice chew to it while the duck meatballs were a bit too salty for my taste. This place was small and intimate. I love the decor and it felt very cozy. About a 2.5: La Fromagerie is a cheese & wine bistro in OT Alexandria. I've been meaning to try this place for quite some time, as who doesn't love cheese?! They feature and support local purveyors, such as Path Valley Farms, Autumn Olive Farm, Twin Spring Fruit Farm, etc., who provides the artisan cheese, meats, and/or fruits - I think that's pretty nice! The hubs and I came here for lunch, and we had the Cheese & Meat Board (you can opt for 3, 5, or 10, or add additional cheese/meats; we opted for five items: the Coppa (dry-cured pork shoulder, seasoned with hot spices - this was pretty okay) and the Wagyu Bresaola (dry-cured wagyu beef, spiced with rosemary and black pepper; an additional charge, this was drizzled with olive oil, and also pretty savory); the Hummingbird (from Doe Run Dairy, PA; cow/sheep cheese that is herbaceous and rich), the Grayson (from Meadow Creek Farms, VA; soft and sticky cow cheese), and the Appalachian (from Meadow Creek Dairy, VA; this was a cow's milk cheese with some buttery undertones) - the board also comes with some dried fruit (mini figs), spicy plum chutney, slices of Granny Smith apples, and a lovely toasted 'crostini' that was drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with some herbs (yum - these were so crispy!). We also tried the Warm Pimento Cheese (was not a fan, as this was very watery; this came with a side of the crispy crostini); the Roasted Mixed Olives (a mixture of olives and lima beans, they were apparently roasted; however, the lima beans were undercooked and almost raw T___T the Mushroom and Onion Tart (I was a little confused by this, as I thought it would be like a mini quiche; it was a puff pastry topped with an overwhelming amount of mushroom slices and chevre, set on some greens; the mushrooms were indeed fresh, but I was missing the 'white wine braised onions' that it was stated to have); and, the Mac n' Cheese (large rigatoni with cheddar, smoked gouda, and Parmesan, this had a large amount of breadcrumbs, but it was very hot out of the oven and still creamy). The place itself is very cute, and they have a large selection of wine. However, our server seemed to be a little unfocused, as she kept confusing the cheeses and the meats when presenting the plate to us. Also, we were hardly ever checked upon, and we had to wave her down for the check and to clear some of the plates away. In addition, the glassware smelled a little funky (!). I popped into here after seeing the intriguing menu and was really pleasantly surprised. While the location seems initially intimidating--no reservation system, 18+ only--the food was actually pretty well balanced and executed. Appetizers were ambitious--escargot, duck pate--but both turned out really well. I was actually blown away by the duck pate, the flavor was wonderfully rich and fatty and almost tasted more like wine than pate. read more

Small wine and cheese shop staffed by friendly people willing to make suggestions, with a well-stocked cheese case. Unexpected meat and wine surprises! Dropped in on La Fromagerie almost by mistake (too cold to walk the rest of the way down to Jackson 20) and found a seat at the bar. Moderate-to-high priced wines ranged from $10-$15 a pour; ended up ordering an obscure $13 pinot noir from Oregon, which was bonkers good. Though this is a sample size of one, much respect to whomever was able to locate this winner and offer it in Northern Virginia. Hanger steak was prepared perfectly rare and featured exquisite meat flavor. Only concerns include oversalting (which seems to be a theme in Alexandria) with what I imagine was sea salt, and the entree's tiny size. The Majestic this is not. Nevertheless, steak was excellent after removing much of the salt with a fork. And the unexpected surprise was the availability of jamon iberico, the hard-to-find Spanish delight. Ordered just the jamon ($8 + $5 = $13, if ordered a la carte) and was served a pretty healthy dose for the price, especially by NYC standards (probably would have run closer to $20). While the jamon flavor was excellent, there were two minor issues. First, the meat was served refrigerator-cold; while it's understandable that refrigeration is necessary to serve an expensive item night after night, this is a delicacy that blossoms when the fats start to melt at room temperature. In fact, meatmongers in Barcelona insist that jamon sit for 20 minutes before digging in. Second (and likely related), the jamon edges were a bit dry and crispy, which likely represented prolonged refrigerator storage. All in all, will definitely skip Jackson 20 again for another go at La Fromagerie. Maybe they have cheese? read more

Fizzy Lizzy drink made of Fuji Apple, Raspberry-Lemon, Tangerine-Passion, and Cranberry. Refreshing delicious with a nice pick me up fizz. 1. Hook's 15 Year Cheddar - delicious extra sharp, rich, nutty, and complex, flavor. Cow Pasteurized. Hook's Cheese Co, WI 2. Chorizo Rioja a Spanish style salami with smoked paprika, garlic and oregano Olympic Provisions, OR. Good and spicy chorizo great flavor and tasty. 3. Yukon Gold Potato soup made with Wild Burgundy Escargot, Garlic Butter, Croutons. Love the thickness of the soup, rich garlic butter flavor and appreciated the nice, bites of escargot. 4. Wild Boar Meatball Sub - House-made wild boar meatballs, butternut squash sauce, sprinkled with parmesan, and Almond/Parsley Gremolata. Meatballs were a bit dry and lacked flavor. Nice cheese & wine spot in Old Town, but it ain't cheap! A friend who was visiting from NYC and I met up here for lunch. I wasn't feeling overly hungry, so we just split soup and a cheese and meat tray ($9 and $18 respectively). The flavor of the soup (butternut squash with all sorts of lovelies) was excellent - the hints of cheese throughout were definitely detectable but in no way overpowering. Delicate little crostini-type things were served on top. It was served in a giant bowl (though it wasn't a giant serving). The meat and cheese tray was good as well. We opted for one meat, one soft cheese, and one hard cheese. It came with an assortment of small (tiny!) tastes to pair with each item, such as a couple of olives, a couple slices of apple, a few dried apricots, etc. I realize that quality meats and cheeses can be quite expensive, but I feel as though better deals can be had elsewhere for just as great quality food. I came here to eat lunch. I wanted to try Braised Rabbit but they told me that it was out. So I ordered Tuna sandwich instead. The sandwich came with green salad. I loved the dressing. The sandwich was nice as well. It had garlic favor and did not have strong tune taste. But unfortunately there was no wow factor. I would rather go to Cheesetique where I have to deal with waiting. This is a wonderful spot in Old Alexandria! I was visiting family several months ago and stumbled upon it, but alas it was a Tuesday and they were closed. This time I decided to make sure they would be open and bring my husband along. The set up is a bit strange, you can either walk in and order cheeses, meats or breads to go or you can sit and one of their communal tables and order lunch/dinner. We opted for the latter of the two and began to look over their menu. They have sandwiches, meat and cheese selections, salads and breads to choose from. We decided to split the Croquet Monsieur and have some hot tea. The sandwich came out rather quickly, they were busy as this was the Friday before Christmas, and they split it for us in the back. It was HUGE - certainly large enough for 3 people. The salad that garnished the plate was delightful - watermelon radishes, purple carrots and local greens. After looking over the menu my husband asked it we could try a selection of cheese for $5 (they offer cheese & meat plates with the note that "additional selections are $5) and they said we could. The Moses Sleeper was so good that we bought half a pound to take home. I particularly appreciated how the cheeses were classified (Creamy, hard, unpasteurized, washed stinky, Bleu vein, etc) and the knowledge of Ben, our server.
