Hotter and like a sauna. In grotto. And very dark. Let your eyes adjust. There are changing rooms unisex / male/ female. Showers. Don't forget to shower before getting into pools. Restaurants and cash bar and juices and drinks. Servers will bring food and drinks at poolsides. With lounges and tables. Overall I'm impressed and I feel 20 years younger. can't wait to return. Though my airbnb host claimed a preference for Escondido Place, advance research told me that La Gruta would be cleaner and more to my liking. Both places, I was warned, will be packed on the weekends so I opted for a weekday visit. Advance research won't just help you decide which place is more "you" but it might also reveal to you things that you might not have discovered if you failed to investigate. For one, you should arrive knowing that you definitely want to get yourself in the pool tunnel that leads to the enclosed grotto, hopefully when the latter is dumping out buckets of water. Am I getting ahead of myself? La Gruta is a place for which I have no US equivalent. It's not a US-style "water park" nor is it a fancy place to sunbathe and swim. There's nothing fancy at all about La Gruta. Mostly, it's a series of warm pools, chaise lounges, lawns, food, and drink. I'd have been happy enough laying by the largest pool, in the sun, occasionally dipping into the warm waters but I was happier once I found the pool that leads to the tunnel and the grotto. La Gruta costs about $12US per person to enter. Bags are quickly checked at point of entry to ensure that no outside food or drink is brought in (do bring your own towels). A refundable cash deposit is required to obtain a locker key and the locker room and changing areas are clean and functional. Once inside and changed, claim your chaise lounge (or table and chairs) with your towel and let the day begin. You've hopefully packed a good book, a comfortable swimsuit, a hat, and sunscreen; all will be used. There's at least 5 different pools at La Gruta, of varying sizes and depths. Some have occasional water spouting from above and others are quiet. Each seems to have its own appeal. The way it's built you can't sit beside the pool that leads to the tunnel and the grotto but you should definitely find it. Then, keep returning until that water spout in the grotto is activated. Guests line up in the water to take their turn getting pelted. It's invigorating and fun. Other stuff: * I hired a driver to take me here and back. It's a short distance away from central SMA but you cannot get here on foot. * Some pools have tree leaves in them, not excessive, but probably not as pristine as one would hope for. This didn't affect my enjoyment of the pools. * Massage, food, and drink also available. I sampled none but heard that those massage appointments fill up fast. read more

If you are ever visiting San Miguel de Allende you must go to Las Grutas... It is a short drive from the Centro and so worth it !!! We came during covid times, so it was not very busy...The baths were still open, but it was very limited which was great because I could only imagine how busy this place can get... I would recommend planning a visit during the week on a non holiday so it's not as busy... There are many different types of pools and most of them are pretty big, deep and some of the pools are not heated ... It's a beautiful place to go spend the day with family and relax... It is very Green and Zen We went in Oct of 2020, so it was cold and overcast, but it was perfect because the thermal pools kept us warm... The most popular pool has a tunnel that takes you into a dome where the hot thermal water is pouring out ...We went in there for a few minutes because it started to get too hot for us.... Definitely a great experience and recommend coming here...The pools were maintained and the area was clean...They have lockers you can rent out to store your belongings. They have showers and picnic areas with lounge chairs available to rent. Loved the hot springs here. The warmest is the one in the tunnel and leading up to the tunnel. 2 other hot springs were filled while we were there, and the water was fine, just lukewarm since it's in the cold month of December. It was too cold to lounge around, but the pools, especially the warm one leading to the tunnel, felt very nice. You can order drinks and drink at the lukewarm pool, just not at the warmer one. If ever there is a place to really relax and heal, this is it! The water is warm and I just wanted to stay all day! It is very clean and we went in the middle if the week so it was not crowded at all. We ordered lunch in the middle if the day. The refried beans were great as was the fresh corn tortillas. The grotto finally opened and going through the tunnel, you could feel the change in temperature as it got warmer and warmer. Finally inside I took my glasses off because it was so very foggy, but the realized the the steam inside was making everything appear foggy! There was a line up to go under the waterfall. It didn't take long for my turn. It felt so good to have the water beat on my head and back. We dried out in the warm sun, got changed and finally it was time hit our taxi to pick us up. Well David and I have been to La Gruta a number of times and we LOVE it -- especially when the hot water gushes out of the wall in the cave and pounds on your back for a free massage. We went from the Central Bus Station (which is on Calzon de la Estacion). Buy a ticket either from the teller at the station or the guy outside near the buses (they both take visa card). Take the Dolores Hidalgo bus and tell them you are going to La Gruta. (the name of the bus stop is El Cortijo) It will be the 1st stop on the highway. It is literally a 5 minutes walk to La Gruta from the bus stop (cross the road and walk in the direction the bus is going) -- there is a BIG sign that you can't miss saying "La GRUTA" The bus will cost you 30 pesos -- which is WAY cheaper than a taxi or Uber. On the way back you can't miss the bus stop. You can pretty much take ANY bus back in to San Miguel. It's is truly a snap! And you will get to meet the local people. A must when in the San Miguel area. Small fee to go in and they offer massages. Massages are booked at the spa office starting at 11am they have a restaurant and several bars/coffee shops inside. They offer lockers for a deposit which is returned when you return the key. I recomendable taking cash. They also have o shop just incase you forget your towel, sandals, phone cover etc. look for the steamed tunnel very nice swim to the end. Oh boy!! I was really looking forward to this place but it was definitely an utter disappointment. For the not allowing my elderly mother to bring in her orange so that she is able to take her medicine, to the meticulous bag search, to the pools not all working properly, to the "we close at 5:00 pm". From the reviews, I thought this place would be a premium spa and yet it looked cheap and flimsy from the entrance on in. The locker rooms were lame, very much like what you'd expect at a state park in the U.S. And worst of all, like some other spas, it feels like they nickel and dime you for everything. Want a towel? Buy one. Want water? Buy it. Water is the one that really peeved me. Plenty of other places in Mexico offer filtered water for free. But here, in thermal baths, where you could really use it? Nah. So why did I give four stars? Well, the baths do the job. The key thing to note is that you want to swim down the dark passage into the cave. As soon as I entered the cave, I said, "This is a hammam." I've been to a hammam in Seville that celebrates Spain's Moorish past, and it was super cool to find the same sort of dome with holes punched in it here in Mexico. Get there early! We got there at 930 and there was already a line forming. We packed a bag full of food (sandwich, chips, snacks) but were told only water and juice afe allowed. Not sure how true is it since some reviewers suggested bring your food. Nonetheless, we left the food in the car and ate after we left the spa. The place is pretty spacious, enough pools for everyone to hang out. The biggest attraction was the gruta..which is a narrow tunnel that takes you to the heart of hot spring. We did that when we first went in so we could take pictures without holding up the line. We also paid for a 30 mins deep tissue massage that was not very good. It was also expensive (450 pesos) so I would suggest skipping it and just let the waterfall massage your lower back for free. Lastly, there were shower stalls all around the facility, go for the one next to the gruta as it was clean and empty. The one by the locker room was too crowded. Lovely thermal pools with nice roman waterfall features to work out your knots. They flush the pools daily, I'm told. Each pool gets progressively warmer as you approach the cave. Very relaxing for us and our children as well as helpful for dry skin/ezcema. Go during the week or as early in the morning as you can. Nice gardens and art. Good massage starting at $28 (500 pesos) for an hour, a bit more for deep pressure. Book massage ahead of time but save time at the end for entering the water. Food is slightly better than ok, service can be slow but the staff is very pleasant. Save your trip to La Gruta for the end of your trip so you can heal your weary legs! Highly recommend visiting the nearby UNESCO site at Santuario Atotonilco (you can have the taxi drop you at the church, the "Sistine Chapel of Meso America" and then walk 10m to La Gruta or take a different cab). read more

If you're in San Miguel De Allende you definitely need to visit La Gruta! We arrived early around 8am and there were barely any people there on a Friday morning it was amazing. They have lockers available for $50 pesos which they give back once you return the keys. They have plenty of seating all over the property and they have waiters that come to you wherever you sit. We got breakfast which was pretty yummy! Fresh squeezed OJ and the coffee was delicious! Service is a little slow but it's understandable with how big the property is. They also have a fully stocked bar. My mom loved her Bloody Mary and my Mojito was super refreshing! The actual pool and the cave are breathtaking and the warm water is so relaxing. The people who do the massages show up at 11AM but even before then tell the workers to take your name down and pay a deposit because the spots fill up fast! The massage was so relaxing 50 minutes and only $600 pesos! My family did not want to leave it was so calm and relaxing! They have clean bathrooms, showers, and changing rooms. I would say definitely pack: a bathing suit, sandals you don't mind getting wet, a change of dry clothes, shampoo/conditioner/body wash to shower, and a TOWEL! They do not provide towels. They do sell them there but they are $150 pesos and very small and thin definitely bring your own. Once you get inside the actually Gruta they have a water fall like thing that pours water certain hours during the day that is super fun and relaxing! Entrance to La Gruta is only $250 pesos! The food and drinks are not included but definitely affordable! Literally cannot wait to go back!! It was not packed at all on the Friday we went and the staff said they also limit admission to reduce over crowding! They have parking and also security. It can be hard to find as we missed a turn on the GPS but luckily a taxi driver was kind enough to show us the way. I really wanted to enjoy this place. I was visiting San Miguel for the day and made it a point to schedule my plans around La Gruta and getting there early on a Wednesday. The site claims reservations are necessary for the pools/spa - that is not the case. You're also told you cannot make reservations for any spa services till the day you're visiting the spa. I was told when I arrived that the spa does not open till 11am - and then you can make an appointment. Well at 10:40am, there were a handful of people on line already. Needless to say, they could not accommodate me till much later in the afternoon. I was not planning on spending the entire day there - I arrived at 9am, for my appointment. Bring a towel too - they forget to mention to bring one on their site. They will happily sell you one when you're there. The experience was very disorganized and disappointing. Spent a Sunday here and left relaxed and refreshed. Started off in the large pool and worked my way up to the warmer water in the cave. The water temperature was warm in the large pool then hot in the cave. After a refreshing 15 minutes in the cave it was time for food. Nice break and getaway to relax from all the walking over cobblestones. Water was warm but not hot hot like the hot springs Im used to in Asia. Temps were more like hot tub temps...but being outdoors was lovely. The tunnel to the hotter cave-like enclosure offered hotter water but not hot springs hot. Tolerable for anybody. We took a taxi out bc we werent quite sure where it was off the highway. Fares range 120-160 pesos. But if you walk out to the highway on your right is a bus stop. 7 pesos back to the center of SMA. Entry to la gruta is 150 pesos, deposit for the locker was 50. There are clean changing rooms, showers, and bathrooms. Grounds were clean and well kept. Restaurant offered diner far: pancakes, eggs, burgers, fries. We left to eat in town. Based on recommendations, we arrived early, 8-9:45AM. Perfect bc it was just getting busy when we left. It would have been nice if we arrived when they opened at 7am to soak in the dark before the sun rose. read more

A lovely way to spend a day in San Miguel. I wouldn't go if you only have a short stay but if you're here longer, go recover from the cobblestone streets and just relax. We brought our family of six. Parents, teenagers, and little girls enjoyed equally. There are lounge chairs, tables on grass, several shallow soaking pools and a cave like grotto that is the hottest of the bunch. Person after person had their phones in hand, risking the water damage for the photo potential. There is an affordable snack bar that sold delicious fruit and vegetable cups, as well as waiters who will take your order poolside. The food was surprisingly tasty. The beans and rice were as good as we had on the trip and the hamburger was tasty too. La Gruta feels a bit like a mid level resort where you can pay by the day. read more

Great way to beat the heat and sun by enjoying water time. It's been around 95 degrees this week. Went twice in May 2018 during the weekday around noon. We didn't have a car and took an Uber there from San Miguel de Allende. Admission was 200 pesos per adult, 3yo and under are free. Can't bring outside food or alcohol. They check your bag before you enter. They let us in with our water bottles and a few snacks we had for our toddler, such as bananas and cereal snacks. There is a paramedic/life guard who walks around the pools. We stayed till 5pm closing each day. La Grutta is right next to Escondido Place hot springs. There drive-ways are right next to each other. We liked the shade and pool-side service of La Grutta, but the other hot spring is worth a visit as well. There were 5 water 'pools'. All the pools had underwater benches that go completely around the perimeter of the pool, except inside the main hot spring dome. I don't recall the depths in numbers. Each pool area has different temperatures of warmth as they get farther from the main hot spring dome. The main hot spring pool was in the dome and you could stand inside it. Not too deep, but deep enough to swim maybe just above the waist deep. A tunnel connects the dome to the outer 2nd pool, which gets cooler than the dome, but still warm and is surrounded by rock walls, so you cannot walk around the pool perimeter. The entrance to this area is either through a small arch tunnel with steps or open steps area where a lot of people like to sit on and enjoy drinks. A third pool is separate, but this 3rd pool is cooler than the previous two. This 3rd pool has reclining cushioned chairs and some benches around it and some tree coverage. It's next to a shower area. Chairs get taken up quick, so come early if you want a spot to recline on. We were in the pools the whole time, so we just put our stuff on a nearby cement bench. You can walk around the outside of this pool. It is about chest high. This seemed like the nice middle ground pool, where adults and kids could enjoy. The 4th pool is nearby and is somewhat of the Kiddie-pool area as it's not very deep. Our toddler could walk around the pool and touch the bottom the entire time. There were some adults also just sitting and relaxing as well. This pool is much cooler than the 3rd pool. There is also shade from the walls and trees. The 5th pool is the largest. We walked across a little bridge to connect to the other areas. This one is also pretty shallow and lots of kids here too. Cooler water than the first 2. Also, the 'pipe' was on and had water shooting down from it. You could stand under it and get a back massage. I wouldn't recommend kids going under the pipe for a massage as it's very strong and powerful. Like punches on your back and could knock you down. I could only tolerate it for a few moments, while others stood under for a long time. The food was good. You can't eat by the pool. You have to eat at the tables. We had quesadillas (4 pieces) and chicken flautas (like taquitos, which they cut in halves, also 4 complete) which were both made with corn tortillas and served with a good helping of guacamole. Chips and salsa were also brought with our order. We enjoyed drinks by the pool. Beer, strong margaritas and pina colada (had cocoa sprinkled on top). There are no Ubers to catch to get home, if you use the app, as it's somewhat distant from the main city and remote. You can ask your ride to come fetch you at a certain time or someone can call a ride for you from the front ticket area. One time we called our Uber 20 minutes before we needed the ride and he was there when we got out. 2nd time, the Uber driver didn't answer our call, but someone at the front called an Uber driver they knew for us and we waited just a few minutes till he arrived. I didn't know what to expect going to La Gruta. I've been to only one other spa before (on a work-expensed offsite ten years ago at a fancy place in New York City). That being said, I had a really fun time at La Gruta. My wife and I visited on a Sunday morning (around 9am) in October. It was cool enough that we enjoyed the hot pools - I couldn't imagine coming here on a muggy day. We spent about an hour in two of the pools, including one that had a long tunneled passageway to a grotto. The grotto was particularly fun, in that we were below-ground in a particularly warm pool of water. The crowds were pretty minimal, but the crowd itself was diverse in age from old folks enjoying walking laps around the grotto to little kids diving into the pools. There was a restaurant, bar, and game room, but we didn't partake. For the price this is a good value for tourists looking to relax a bit outside of San Miguel. read more

The pools were nice and the food was reasonable in price. My issue was the massage I received. I went with my wife who speaks Spanish and we requested a 30 minute reflexology session. the menu said it would be a foot treatment. .. I've been doing massage for 15 years and teaching for 6. What I got was a light oil application to my back, arms, legs, and feet. Imagine someone applying sunscreen for 30 minutes. 5 minutes were spent on my feet and those were the only enjoyable minutes of the massage. Don't bother with the massage here. The hot spring were nice. There was a kids pool and a regular pool that had the tunnel which took you to the dome-like hot spring. I would've liked to spend more time here. I recommend finding a day when there's not a lot of people and getting there early. We used the temazcal (which you had to pay for as an extra from the entrance fee) it was my first time experiencing one, so I'm not sure how original it was, but they give you a delicious tea, which honestly I would go back for. Bring cash for extras (temazcal, massagess) as they didn't take card for those, they claimed their card reader was down but they did accept credit card at the restaurant. read more

Just a heads up, the Temazcal only seems to be open in the mornings and limited to 4 slots, so get there early if that's on your agenda. Also, make sure you have exactly 50 pesos to pay for the locker rental - they won't give change (but you will get your money back when your return the key). They check your bags for outside food, which is not allowed. But they have snack stands for drinks and small things to eat. My husband and I went her today and it was such an incredible experience I had to write a review immediately. We had the pleasure of having the Temezcal Ceremony lead by Rosey. In this ceremony we went into a volcanic rock and concrete area where Rosey closed it off to the outside as she burned herbs and poured water on the volcanic rocks to produce steam. We banged on drums, screamed, took deep cleansing breaths, rubbed honey on our bodies and truly went through a transformation. Even if you are reading this thinking it sounds crazy I beg you to put your judgement away until you have the pleasure of experiencing it yourself. It is better than couples therapy and your skin will radiate as well. Also the pools are wonderful and the tunnel that leads to the cave was spectacular! When I take small group tours to San Miguel de Allende we always include a leisurely lunch and afternoon at La Gruta. Relax and swim in the beautiful hot springs. Have a nice, inexpensive lunch with margaritas at their on-site cafe and perhaps schedule a massage. This "spa with hot springs" is not a spa with hot springs. It is a dingy dirty pool or water park at best. It is not worth the trip.
