Went to La Habichuela on Tuesday night for dinner. We never miss coming to this amazing restaurant in Cancun in all the years we have been coming. Staff, food ambiance is amazing. I will say that this time I had a pretty big disappointment. After dinner I asked the waiter if he could call the cab who had brought us, the driver had given me his card. The elderly gentleman at the front door came back and said thief was no answer. I found this odd as the driver was eager to get the return business. Anyway he offered to call me a cab, said it would be about 5 minute's. When the cab arrived we got fast because it was raining. When we got back to the hotel the driver charged me $37 US. I told him the ride there was only $27 in that cab. He informed he is not a cab, but a car service. I am calling BULLSHIT! If you offer to get me a cab, get me a cab not some over priced relative for a kickback. It was my fault for not checking and I paid the $37. No tip. Just beware if you go here and they offer you a cab. I am giving two stars because I felt betrayed read more

Amazing restaurant with excellent food, top service, and an enchanting atmosphere. We were in Cancun for the week and they had the best margaritas I had the whole time I was in Mexico. We ordered the ixtopa ceviche I had the filet mignon and my husband got the seafood parade. We were there with our friend to have a nice dinner on our last night in Mexico. This is really a surprising place! It's not far from Parque de los Palapas. It's got a fancy feel to it, but we came in in our regular tshirts and shorts. It's got a very picturesque outdoor seating area (too hot to do this visit). The staff is very friendly and formal. Alfredo was great in helping my sister decide what to get, and she ended up with a custom dish of shrimp fettuccine! That was awesome. The bread isn't to be missed! They have all kinds, and you really can't go wrong with them. I tried the oregano roll, "natural" roll, banana bread (with molasses in it, I think), and garlic bread. The butter is super soft so it spreads on nicely. They offer a sorbet between the appetizers and entrees. It's the cutest presentation! We also had the guacamole for an appetizer, and it was the best we had our entire vacation! If you love it as much as we do, try it out. It had just the right amount of lime juice and onions and tomatoes mixed in. Perfect! I got the grilled shrimp and garlic butter sauce. This is where I docked a star. My garlic butter sauce was in a little cup, and I tried to pick it up and burned my fingers pretty good! They really should have warned me it was that hot. It likely came right out of an oven. I don't have any lasting marks, and the pain subsided fairly fast, but that could have been worse especially if I ended up dropping it. (Am I the only one who picks up dipping cups? I'm still not sure why it was never mentioned to me how hot it was.) The shrimp was just okay, but it had slipped past the done point. I was surprised that you could order it with shell on or off. I made sure it was off. We didn't order dessert as we had just had a massive bag of churros down the road, but this was a neat place! We got out of there for around $65 USD total! We made online reservations more than 24 hours in advance. The taxi ride was 30 minutes from our hotel as the restaurant is downtown, further than the typical hotel zone eateries. When we arrived and approached the front door of the restaurant, we were greeted by a gentleman telling us that the kitchen is closed for a private event. I turned to see our taxi driving away. They had ample opportunity to email/call us and let us know that they will not be able to serve us. Adding insult to injury, they then marked us as missing our reservations on the online system! We decided to walk through the neighborhood. This restaurant is not located in a tourist-oriented area, taxi's are not easily found and Uber isn't an option here. A wasted taxi ride that took us to a wasted evening on our vacation. All which could have been avoided with a simple email/call from the restaurant. Inconsiderate, to say the least. read more

It's a tourist trap for Americans who do not care about authentic Mexican flavours. Ambience is good though. We used Yelp to find this restaurant as we had already ate at the other restaurant twice and wanted something new. The interior of the restaurant is breathtaking. We had a party of twelve and they were able to accommodate us. The chips and salsa weren't distributed evenly. The side of guacamole was just enough for two people. We came to La Habichuela for a wedding reception dinner. The restaurant has a nice private area for gatherings. The staff are professionals here and the tables were prepared for our large party. The dinner was a course with 3 meat choices. I went with a local fish and it was very good. It had a special sauce over the crusted fish. The fish was prepared perfectly with a moist and tasty flavor. The restaurant was a treat for outside the resort, so I really enjoyed the local Cancun atmosphere. This place is really good for parties and the outside area had a live band going on. I recommend this place if you want to celebrate with a bunch of personas. Adios! read more

This is hands down, the most amazing restaurant experience that I have ever had. I tried a lot of different restaurants while I was in Cancun, and while this place is certainly pricier than some of the neighboring establishments, it is well worth it for the high quality food and service. Don't be fooled by the appearance of the surrounding neighborhood--this spot is incredible and very nice looking. This particular location also happens to be cheaper than the other one located in the hotel zone, so I definitely recommend it. It is a little gem in the middle of Cancun. When I walked in, the host immediately handed me a little Mayan necklace souvenir to take home with me. They then gave me a little table to put my purse on--one of the most awkward things is when you go out to eat and there's no place to put your purse! We were seated outside, but there are actually fans placed around the perimeter to cool us off and we were very comfortable. We were greeted by our friendly waiter, Alfredo, who gave lots of recommendations. They also served bread, but instead of placing a basket on the table, they came around with a large basket containing a variety of (delicious) breads and you could select the ones you wanted--I liked this because then you don't end up wasting a ton of bread! As an appetizer, we got the lobster bisque and the fried calamari. The bisque was thick and creamy, with a really unique flavor. The fried calamari was perfect. Before we got our entrees, they served a small dish that was a scoop of some sort of sorbet in a fruit cup--this little thing was amazing. I'm guessing it served as a palate cleanser. For my entree I got their signature Cocobichuela which was rice, shrimp, and lobster in a curry sauce served in a coconut and with tropical fruits. My boyfriend got the surf and turf which came with lobster, steak, shrimp, and a baked potato. Both of these dishes were absolutely outstanding. They were served with clarified butter, almond butter, and garlic butter. Oh my god. Clarified butter alone is simply amazing, but all three of these with our food....no words can adequate describe how amazing this dinner was. The steak was tender, seafood was sweet and delicious....you must look at the pictures of this food. And to top it off, when you check in here on Yelp, you get a free Mayan coffee. We showed it to the guy and he goes "we will do that at the end." So towards the end of our meal, Alfredo brings out a small table with tools and ingredients. I thought this was a bit much for a coffee until I realized what a Mayan coffee was! There were two silver sauce boats, and one was filled with what I think was some sort of blue sugar. He then poured brandy and mayan liquor into it, and lit it on fire. Then came a performance where he was literally pouring fire from one sauce boat into the other to fully mix the ingredients. It was then topped with the Mayan coffee and whipped cream. This drink was simply delicious and actually tasted like coffee!! It was very strong but you could barely taste the alcohol. And keep in mind that this whole Mayan coffee thing was free with the Yelp check-in! The food, the service, the ambiance, everything was amazing. Alfredo is fantastic. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this place if you are in Cancun. read more

This restaurants location and design is so cute. It has that whole vintage vibe to it and the food here was amazing. First of all bread is basically life, and this place has a man that comes around to your table with an assortments of the fluffiness bread I've ever eaten. ( I may have asked for a refill of bread at least 8 times ) We came here for a bachelorette dinner and they were just so accommodating, and made sure we had everything we needed. They even gave us these super cute necklaces to wear and keep. The prices were pretty reasonable considering we had a party of 8th. The majority of us got the surf and turf and the filet was cooked perfectly to medium rare! And the lobster basically melted in your mouth. The coconut shrimp curry is so good! The flavors and bold and delicious comes inside a cute little coconut too. It's not too big of a portion though but just enough considering we also got fried calamari as an appetizer. ( which was just ok) The lobster bisque was probably our least favorite, the flavoring was off and we just couldn't figure out what it was, but we each had a bite and then didn't finish it. (We each just needed one to do the trick!) the food was awesome! She got surf and turf and everything came out perfect! I got this awesome dish that is unlike anything I've ever had. They called it a cocoabicheula sp? Anyhow, it's a coconut that they stuff with a curry dish containing huge chunks of lobster and generous amounts of shrimp! Absolutely awesomeness!!!! So good! The menu is on a large board sat on the table, kind of cute, but you're rushed thru it making it difficult to make an informed decision. The lobster bisque ( a house specialty) was bland, the Seafood parade comprised of a small lobster tail, 3 prawns, and a fish filet was so over cooked it was difficult to eat. My partner had the grilled prawns, also over cooked. The meal altogether was an embarrassment for a restaurant billed as being so special. The ambience was very nice...an outdoor courtyard with plenty of plants and trees making for a romantic setting. Considering the quality of the food, the pricing was exorbitant. A bit of a fancy tourist trap but I must say I really enjoyed the design and the layout of the courtyard. Warning: bring mosquito repellent particularly at night if sitting near the bushes. After seeing many positive reviews, we visited La Bahichuela on our first night and were greeted by friendly staff who gave me a fun "Mayan" necklace upon arrival. There is a fishtank in the entrance and ample seating inside but if possible, try to sit outside in the fresh air among the FAIRY LIGHTS! We ordered the Famous Cocobichuela - shrimp and lobster inside a coconut with a curry and rice sauce + grilled pineapple and banana on the side and a serving of the enchilada. Wanted a "Treat yoself" night in Cancun and La Habichuela delivered! I was a solo diner which can sometimes be made into an awkward experience depending on the wait staff, but my servers were great and made me feel very comfortable. On top of that the backyard garden was beautiful and made for a lovely quiet meal. In step with my indulgence theme I start off by ordering a bottle of the Argentinian Malbec (yes, to myself), which was moderately priced and quite good. I did have to refill my glass myself a couple of times, but I can't blame the establishment for that, I drink wine like Kool-Aid. The constant warm bread and rolls being passed out were delicious and just perfectly took the edge off my hunger. (I bet the moneygram employee I snapped at earlier in the day wishes he would have had this as a defensive mechanism). I started with the Tuna Tostada which, although left much to be desired in terms of presentation, was a great and well portioned way to start the meal. I'd also like to note that everything was perfectly timed. Not too slow, but was definitely given the appropriate time to enjoy the meal and ambiance. Before my entrée came I was served a small portion of sorbet to cleanse my palette. Something that seems to be going out of style recently, but I was delighted to see it lives on! For my meal I went with the Famous Cocobichuela. Which is basically shrimp and lobster cooked inside a coconut with a curry and rice sauce. Incredible. My only complaint is that there was only one small ring of pinapple. Not that this was something the menu promised, I just love me some pinapple and was feeling greedy. The portion was perfect, I found myself digging at the bottom of the coconut for more, but quite honestly I would have been overdoing it with even one more spoonful. I left full, tipsy and smiling. This place was amazing (the one in downtown cancun - we didn't try the Sunset). We arrived at 6pm and found that no one else was dining in their beautiful backyard patio. We had the patio to ourselves for nearly an hour - it was nice and quiet, but things picked up by 7:30pm. The service was impeccable from start to finish. We never had to try and flag down our server; they seemed to know the perfect balance between giving enough attention and giving too much. The food was incredibly delicious. We ordered guacamole and seafood ceviche for appetizers, shared the chicken in mole for a main course, and opted for the cute little Chichen Itza shaped chocolate (with a mint ice cream cenote) for dessert. YUM. Hard to pick one dish that stands out...they were all amazing. The chicken in mole was fall-off-the-bone perfect. Also included with our meal was a selection of fresh breads with butter and a palate-cleanser of guava sorbet. This meal was a nice romantic treat for us, but it was still less expensive than home. For 2 appetizers, 1 entree, 1 dessert, 4 margaritas and 2 coffees, it came to the equivalent of $80 CAD. A meal like that back home in Toronto would've set us back at least $250. Amazing value, wonderful atmosphere and delicious food! I would definitely come back here again. read more

An absolute must when visiting Cancun! I am from LA, but born in Mexico. I was looking for some delicious authentic Mexican food and La Habichuela hit the spot! The food was superb and it was clear they used only the highest quality ingredients. Also, some of the best service I've ever had -- world wide. The ambiance is gorgeous too! The four of us went in for a late lunch today, expecting much value for the money and full flavoured, rich, unique food given our limited window in country before our return home to the states. I ordered the calamari appetiser with fried parsley, and we had micheladas, cheladas, y daquiris to drink. I had the Chef's special - Mero negro (black grouper) con arroz y zanahorias, con otras vegetales. Unimaginative presentation, I did not feel like I was eating in Mexico but rather someplace I'm America from decades prior. It was outdated at best, nothing I cannot make in my tiny apartment kitchen back home and without formal culinary training at that. The sauce on the fish was promised to be Mexican and Mayan inspired, yet clearly had been reheated prior to pouring so it was not that good, the vegetables were raw yet say under a heat lamp so instead of bring over steamed they were too firm and hurt to chew, and were not flavoured in any way. The fish was tough and over cooked, not the soft yet firm, juicy sensation that one expects with grouper fillets. Plus, American jazz music plays in the background, and you can tell that this place is trying to be a fine dining establishment from America in the 1980's/1990's. My cousin's steak was unimaginative as well, tough, under seasoned and full of specs, some of which flew into his eyes as he carved it. The other two dishes, mole con pollo, y enchiladas con pollo, lacked flavour as well. Overall, the best items were the garlic bread and the drinks, but nothing that couldn't be perfected in kitchens elsewhere. If I could offer any advice to La Habichuela, it would be to quit trying so hard to be formal and high end when you can't get the basics right, learn how to make an EXCELLENT steak and not a below average one, incorporate more local flavour into the menu, bring down your prices to match the local economy and focus less on extravagant presentations and more on delivering high quality food which is rich and full flavoured (instead of everything being bland) and speed of service. read more

Took 45 min for appetizers which were over fried calamari and shrimp cocktail where the shrimp looked and tasted old. They were visibly brown. It took another 30 min for the food. We had their crepes as starters and they were just ok. I had the chicken in mole but didn't like it. The sauce was kinda raw but spicy, so wasn't a big fan. The husband had their famous coconut dish which actually was pretty damn good (obviously I had about half of his food since I was so disappointed with mine :D).
