Halfway through the talk, they noticed the high surf hazard, and instructed us to row out quickly. Seconds later a wave hit, another boat collided with ours, and we capsized. We were evacuated to shore and our electronics water-damaged. Guides were funny but not trained on safety protocols and nonchalant until it was too late. Nobody has responded to our emails.

I had SUCH a fun time with the La Jolla Kayak team. I…read morewould recommend this tour to anyone who loves the water and wants to see sea life up close. We had a noon tour; they texted several times beforehand to make sure we had everything sorted and knew where/when to be. It was easy to find, with plenty of street parking available in the surrounding neighborhood (make sure you pay attention to the signs!). We left promptly at noon after being fitted with fins, a life vest, and a helmet. We walked down to the beach as a group, were given a safety demo/how-to crash course, and then sent off in our kayaks to wait for the group a little offshore, and headed out to the caves together. I am an avid swimmer and have kayaked quite a bit, but there were several people in our group who were beginners, and I feel like everyone was given just the right amount of attention. The tour took 3 hours; they timed it very well too. The best part (to me) was the snorkeling. I could have stayed out there for HOURS. It was a fabulous tour, and I would 100% do it again if I get to go back to La Jolla.

Check-in was easy, and they help you gear up with a life vest and helmet. Important tip: wear a swimsuit because you will get wet, and only bring your phone in a waterproof case. Everything else (sunglasses, loose items) can easily get lost. Parking is street only, and you walk about 5 minutes to the beach with your group. At the beach, they give you paddles and guide you into the water. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We did get to see seals, which was a highlight. The only downside was the waves were pretty strong that day, so we couldn't fully go into the caves, which was a bit disappointing. It's definitely a workout, but still really fun overall. I'd give it an 8/10 and would recommend it if you're in La Jolla and want something active and memorable.
