Yikes, something needs to change here with customer service. The reviews speak truth, this store is not about the customer as a central focus, I wonder what is the focus here? I came in just to ask if I could use the bike pump because my tires were low. I was standing near the bike pump right by the door. I was told to go around to the wall attached pump. Ok no problem, you don't want me using your pump. When I did it was held together by electrical tape and leaked air from the side. I tried for 10 minutes and air kept leaking from the side. I came back in, looking at the pump on the ground, I asked the worker and he said it was "working 10 minutes ago" which is not true because when I first came in he was in the back store room. And I was out there for almost 10 minutes. I said it was leaking and he told me to use the yellow pump but to move my bike as it was blocking the door. Very low sense of respect or care for customer, I'm not a student and probably older than this guy working there, but that is not how you treat people if you want to run a business or manage one. If you're a student I get you have limited choices but Uber elsewhere for the sake of your bike! read more

Worst customer service, ever. Came in with my scooter on Monday. Was promised to have it repaired by Tuesday, 4 pm. Came in Tuesday at 4 pm, and they didn't even start on the repair. I handed over my promise slip to the owner, and he snatches it away without a single glance, then tells me that the employee who marked my order accidentally put down the deadline as Wednesday. No apologies whatsoever. I come the next day and ask if I could get a small discount for them wasting 30 minutes of my time. The employee just goes "nope" and still no apologies. The employee tells me they had a super busy week and that not everyone brings in scooters on Mondays or Tuesdays, as if it's my fault for their mistake. read more

Big shout out to Saul who did the full tune up and safety check for my bike. Very helpful and knowledgeable about what he is doing. The manager is very rude. I have been in multiple times for various bike issues and every time the manager has been extremely unhelpful and left me feeling frustrated...all the student workers are great however their evil dictator(the manager) is the worst. I borrowing a tool from a student worker for a quick fix and when the manager came back she yelled at the employee for lending a tool. Super lame that after spending $45 on parts the manager is gonna not let me borrow a wrench. read more

TLDR: Unless you are buying a throwaway bike, read the warranty before buying and keep the receipt. And DON'T BUY KHS BIKES! So I bought a bike called KHS FLITE 750 about a few years ago from this bike shop. It's a nice bike, but I notice that the back wheel keeps popping and the spokes keep breaking. After moving away from that area, after replacing two spokes at a new bike shop, I ride away to find that my wheel pops again. So the new bike shop open up the wheel, and take off the spoke tape. And I am amazed that there are quite a few unnecessary holes throughout the rim of the bike. The mechanics and the owner think those holes are for the valve, but then changed their mind before they made the hole that went right through the rim. (Now I am not saying that the extra holes are responsible for the spokes breaking, but the spokes breaking is how I came to find out that there were unusual holes covered up by the rim tape ) I decided to take video proof of the wheel of the bike that was sold to me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKgEKO8XYaE (the conversation starting 30 seconds is relevant to me, there is another customer who talks in the beginning about his front wheel). Have anyone of you had a bike wheel like this? The weird holes are marked with a yellow highlighter. So the bike shop never gave me any notice of this defect, but at the same time, I have contacted KHS, and they will not assume responsibility because their warranty only lasts for one year from date of purchase. (How was I supposed to know my back wheel had holes in it if it was covered up?) I may upload screenshots or pictures of the holes later. edit: I am unsure if I should be mad at the bike shop, KHS, or both. Probably KHS, but to be safe, I cannot recommend buying from either. If this were a better bike shop, I would hope they replace the rim for free out of the goodness of their hearts or out of pride of being a good bike shop. But the shop is not assuming responsibility either. edit2: I do remember getting a spoke repaired in their shop within the one year warranty, and the store did not think to tell me the holes that were there when they took off the rim tape. As I was getting my mask from my wife, I could see at least 3 people inside the store without masks. I have no problem wearing mask, but I have a problem with double standards! It's 2018 and this bike shop is still the flagship two wheel story on campus at UCSD. This is such a handy spot and the customer service has been great! I needed tube replacements for my bike and was able to pick up a few here. On a separate but not to distant date my tire went flat when I arrived on campus but I didn't realize this until it was time to bike home. I was simply spent for more bike dealings on my own so I took it to the bike shop on campus and they totally replaced everything I asked them to take care of - tire and tube. Bear in mind they were nearing closing time yet they took care of everything with a few helpful reminders that I should adhere to for my bike care. This is the worst bike shop I have ever gone to. Don't get me wrong, some of the workers such as Ian and Foon are extremely nice, but other workers are extremely pretentious and hyper-masculine. They're not helpful at answering any questions and will often treat you like a moron for not knowing everything about bikes and will often cut you off while you're explaining what is wrong with your bike. Also, once I tried to order a set of wheels from them and they kept forgetting my order for weeks and when they said they ordered the wheels I came back to check and they had completely forgotten about the order. Terrible service! I went to Mission Hills instead and got those same wheels in the next week and installed. Overall, I never take my bike here anymore - even to fill up my tires. I try to avoid this place at all costs - Mission Hills is a far better alternative. read more

I came by here once a few years ago when I was a grad student and needed a new part for my old mountain bike. It was a Schwinn or some other mediocre brand/model. I didn't need an expensive bike since I commuted less than 10 minutes. My decent bike still got jeers and looks of disdain from the holier-than-thou staff. They totally lacked customer service and had the typical arrogance you associate with bike shops. I went again recently to register my bike and the conversation went: "Hi I'm here to register my bike" "We're out of forms, have been for two months" "Seriously?" "Yep" (long silence while I wait for any amount of effort or solution to come from the worker) Then I walked out. WTF? Unhelpful and lazy staff are enough to make me steer clear of the UCSD bike shop in the future. I even had a very nice road bike with me this time. There's no hope for 'em. Blacklisted. read more

This place is great for bike repairs!! I went here because I inherited an old bike a while back and needed a chain and potentially a new sprocket (the wheel that attaches to the chain). They attended me right away without an appointment. The clerk felt that I needed both the chain and sprocket because they were so rusty. It was going to be $45 total for labor and parts which I felt was reasonable. Then he checked with another worker who felt I just needed a chain which was only $18 with labor and all. I appreciated that they are not trying to rip people off here. I got the bike back in 2 days and it's been working great until.... Yesterday, I got a flat tire so I went back. Again, I didn't have to wait. I told the clerk, Michael that I had changed a tire once upon a time, but would like to be walked through it again. Michael was a great instructor and spent 10 minutes teaching me how to change the tire. He let me do all of the major parts. In the end it was $7! I tipped him because he didn't charge for service at all. This place is super convenient if you are a UCSD student and it's nice to know that there are places on campus that are not trying to charge you extra for being on campus. I've been going to this bike shop for a few years out of it's convenient location on the UCSD campus. It has all the basic items for your bike as well as sells quite a few bikes, yet the cons far outweigh the pros. By far the worst element of this shop is the customer service (as others have mentioned before). You can be waiting at the front desk/check out for at least 10 minutes and no one will approach or help you. If you have a question and approach an employee, they often act like you are bothering them and distracting them from talking to their friends. And as others have also mentioned, there definitely is a hyper-masculine/pretentious vibe to the whole place and you get the impression from them off the bat that either you know what you are doing or (in most cases) you do not. To top it all off on a recent experience with a flat, I went to the shop and the owner told me it'd take an hour. I come back an hour later and my bike is sitting in the same place. When I tell him I came to pick up my bike, he said it would take 5 minutes to fix the unfixed bike still with the flat. I come back and it's fixed, but if it was going to take 5 minutes in the first place, why not inform me and save me more than an hour! To top it all off, it still cost the same price even though it significantly cut into my day. As a result, they just lost a customer. I recommend that if you are on campus, do not come here and if you want to stick the UTC area, go to UC Cyclery instead, just a short walk from campus. They have far better customer service and are as a whole considerably quicker. read more

The staff here are helpful and knowledgeable on all aspects of bicycles and the individual components. I've purchased 3-4 items over the years and had my bike repaired twice. One of the repairs the staff did for free and had me out the door within 5 minutes. I just broke a strobe light today and will be heading there for repair/replacement. This is a shop full of students that actually don't know anything about bikes, anything about proper sizing, and to top it off...horrible service. I'm 5'6" and should be riding a 52-54" frame but the guys at the shop insisted that I should be on a 48" bike instead... There is absolutely no attention to detail, and I really wouldn't recommend that anybody go here unless it's to buy parts off of their mediocre selection of equipment. read more

It may be small, cramped and hard to get to, but they are true bicycle repair professionals. Free tools and bike pumps outside for convienence, and a very helpful staff. I had my chain repaired (15$) and an intermediate service (45$) done. When my chain was actin' up afterwards, they replaced my cables and fixed my problem for free. Awesome read more

Been using the campus shop for more than a few years, but within the last year a lot as I now commute to work on campus by bike. Always reasonable repair costs and parts, and having put 900 miles on my bike since January, there have been a few. Most bikes here are really there with a student in mind, inexpensive so you won't cry when stolen, but they do great work. All these old cries of poor customer service are just that, old. The place is my home away from home. If you know a thing or two about bikes they will immediately make you feel at home. I'm currently a senior at UCSD and I really enjoying going into the bike shop mainly because the atmosphere promotes self-learning and the DIY attitude about bikes and more. I found that the gear on my bike did not work while cycling from Carmel Valley to UCSD, this morning. Got to the bike shop. They said that they could fix it for 15 USD, and that the bike would be ready at 4 PM. So it went, and happy I cycled away, around 4:10 PM. After about a mile, I had a puncture. I went back to the shop. Luckily they could change the tube and tire (as it was damaged) in 5 minutes, for a total of about 31 USD. Good price, friendly staff, and great service! read more

I've been coming to this small out of the way shop for a few years now as it's on my commute to work on Torrey Pines Rd. There are a couple other shops nearby such as UC Cyclery, but the vibe I have gotten from there is that if you don't look like you race and fit that mold, they are a bit condescending. UCSD bike shop, now Campus Bike and Skate, has some very interesting skate boards as well. I even purchased one for a friend's son who couldn't believe that I manged to select a cool board like the one I ended up buying. The employees can change at the shop since they support and hire many of the attending students but the manager there has always been a friendly and familiar face. It amazes me that they repair the bikes they do because one truly needs to know how to work on some of the old bikes I have seen there. I would recommend this shop to anyone, it reminds me of a time when people had the knowledge and enthusiasm for bikes. read more

These guys work hard to ensure good customer service. What it must be like to cater to the needs of students with some of the heaps of gears they call bicycles I can't imagine, but they'll do their best for your bike. It's a little cramped and could be brighter to check out the merchandise, but there aren't that many shiny baubles to look at anyhow. I bought a lower end model road bike here a few years ago and they took care of it and even upgraded the stem for free after the first one broke from an encounter with a meaner section of SD highway. They definitely carry some good brands that will provide a selection for everyone and most price ranges. read more

The people here are very nice. The bikes however, are pricey so I never bought one. But my friend did and they help you get started and probably throughout your stay at UCSD. They also helped us screw another bike. Outside is a pumper and some tools for anyone to use. read more
