ZERO STARS. I called ahead to ask if he had time to check a rear break issue - he said yes feel free to come by now. Upon arrival he acted like we were an extreme inconvenience. He barely looked at my bike, tinkered a bit with the handles, took my bike for a lap and then he was "too busy" to help fix (there was no one there). This entire time he was holding his breakfast in one hand and talking while chewing. Then as we were trying to get away from the bad vibes he adds in "that will be 30 dollars for labor". Very disappointing experience at this bike rental shop. Do not recommend! Todd tried to charge us adult prices for the children rentals, pressured us to pay cash, and did not have the bikes advertised on his website. We had to ask him multiple times to find a bike with hand brakes for our daughter and he complained they were too far back to get. When we came to return the bikes, he was not in the shop and his work colleague would not take responsibility for checking the bikes back in. Rented two electric bikes from this shop. Todd was very friendly and knowledgable. Helped us with selection of the bikes to fit our needs (and hight) . We rented for two days, so Tod provided us with the charge cords for our bikes, so we can store and charge them overnight at our hotel. Helmets were provided as well. Bought a bike from Todd this past weekend. Felt compelled to write a review today. Todd seems like a friendly guy but my buying experience was sketchy as hell. Also now that I've ridden a few times, my brakes barely work, which is so dangerous. I have to squeeze all the way down to even get the slightest halt, and even then, the bike never comes to a full halt. Forget going up or down any hills. I found him through OfferUp where he was listing bikes for sale that he imports and builds himself. Very very high demand as bikes are sold out everywhere due to the pandemic - online, in store, no matter where you look, they are either backordered until September, or upwards of $800-1000 even just for regular mountain bikes. We were referred to him by a friend and the prices were reasonable on OfferUp so we made an appointment with Todd on Saturday to look at the bikes. He said to swing by at 2pm so we did. The "store" which is a bike rental shop, is inside another shop selling Himalayan goods. You walk all the way to the back and there he is. Except he wasn't. I stood there and waited for a little bit before we texted him again through the app and waited for another 20 minutes. There was a woman who had a 1:30pm appointment with him that he missed as well. Frustrated, we all left. At around 4pm we received a message from Todd saying that he had to walk his dog. Ok for sure. Maybe don't schedule appointments with customers then? Or give them a heads-up at least? Then he asked if we could come now. We considered not going because, how unprofessional, but I really wanted to have a bicycle for the weekend. Begrudgingly we drove all the way back to OB to look at the bikes. I test rode 2 of them and ended up going with a simple black bike with 7 gears - Hybrid Bicycle "Columbia" Archer. One of the cheapest on his OfferUp listings. Before test-riding, I was more interested in the turquoise bike, but after chatting with Todd, he said that the black one was the closest thing to a mountain bike and the most sturdy of all bikes. When I asked how much it was, he said, "for you, $290." But on the OfferUp, the black bike is listed for $280. Uhhhh.... ok. We didn't realize that at the time because we had intended on buying another more expensive bike, so like a dumbass I ran across the street and withdrew the amount of cash that Todd asked for. It actually ended up being $300 cash, "with tax" I'm assuming. Even though I gave him cash and there aren't any credit card fees? I went inside the store/rental shop where Todd proceeded to try and sell me bike lights, locks, accessories, all which were marked up by a lot. There was a bike light that attaches to the handle bars that he was selling for $42 and I am pretty sure I saw it on Amazon for like $10. Then he showed me a flashing red light that I could attach to the back of my bike, which I thought was a good safety measure, so I bought it for an extra $5 from the cash I withdrew. When we went home and really looked at it, we saw that it was broken and literally taped back on (pictures attached here). Honestly it's my fault for buying a broken item. I was just moving too quickly that day (which is what happens when you waste an entire afternoon driving back and forth between 2 cities) and really regret not being more discerning. We met up with our friend who also bought a bike from Todd that weekend so we could go riding together. I asked him how much he paid for his bike, which was a white one that was actually more expensive than my black one on OfferUp. He said he was able to get it for $250 flat. Moral of the story guys - the way Todd does business is not kosher. Don't be an idiot like me, and stand up for yourself. Go ahead and bargain. read more

It's 2020 and the pandemic hit. You go to Walmart, target, big 5, dicks to try and find bikes and they're SOLD OUT. Like I mean SOLD OUT. You can't even order from their websites. I slowly get discouraged and then I go on OfferUp and come across Top Jolt. I reach out and ask about the cruisers he was selling and he immediately responded and we connected. As the only bike rental in Ocean Beach, you don't really have a choice. And the good news is that the pricing is great, and there was a choice between a cruiser, road bike or electric bike. Helmets were available for free. And the owner is a really interesting and informative guy. What else do you want? If you want a top of the line place, or a place that looks like a top of the line place, then this isn't exactly that, but it's Ocean Beach, home of Crazy White People and the faint smell of urine everywhere, and the bikes definitely aren't in top shape, but they work fine. We biked the entire city of San Diego, well, most of it, and had no issues. Stop reading these reviews and go rent a bike already! read more

Tl;dr: Overall great experience renting cruisers from Top Jolt. The bikes were perfect for biking along the boardwalk to the many different SD beaches! 4 stars instead of 5 only because Todd does not have a physical shop location which required a bit more phone call effort and pickup/drop-off coordination. Though Todd did deliver the bikes to our Airbnb which was a nice touch! Would recommend. Longer version: We had a really good time with our Top Jolt bike rentals. Rented for the day and got to cruise all around the SD beaches and surrounding neighborhoods. We were staying in Ocean Beach (OB) for the weekend and wanted to bike along the boardwalk but there are so many bike rental places in SD it was overwhelming. Top Jolt seemed the most affordable and accessible if you're not staying in a vacation rental right on the ocean. There are a ton of bike rental places along the boardwalk but they seemed overpriced and we weren't staying right by the water so it would have been a bit of a walk. Todd was extremely accommodating and even dropped off the bikes at the Airbnb we were staying at in OB. He does not have a physical shop location which was a bit confusing at first when we were trying to figure out how to rent from him. We ended up just calling him and giving him all of our information, which felt a bit sketchy, hence only 4-stars. But in the end, it was a perfectly fine experience and Todd was incredibly kind. My family and I were visiting from Indiana and staying nearby in Ocean Beach. I called Todd at 10am on the 4th of July, hoping to rent 5 e-bikes for the day. I expected availability over the holiday to be limited and our last minute request would leave me disappointed, so was pleasantly surprised that he was able to accommodate my request. We walked a few blocks to pick up our bikes, were greeted with enthusiasm, and shortly left with 5 e-bikes, 5 helmets, and locks. We were so grateful to have the bikes to tour the city on such a busy day...we didn't have to worry about traffic or parking anywhere we went. We were able to enjoy our time and visit several great spots around the city, including Sunset Cliffs, Mission Bay, and even a trip to In-N-Out Burger.
