I have been seen by Dr. Handler a few times in the past. My primary suggested it was time to have my vision checked by an ophthalmologist so he referred me to Dr. Handler again. I was able to make an appointment a few months from when I called. When I arrived at the office, I was informed that they do not take my current insurance. I understand. HOWEVER, the way this information was presented was so mater-of-factly and less than friendly/professional. When appointments are made, the front office staff should check insurance at that point. Not too much to ask, I think. I drove from Alpine to 4th Ave only to have to drive back home. So frustrating. Too bad, too, because Dr. Handler is great and is not being helped by staff who don't do their job efficiently. read more

I took my college-age daughter in to see Dr. Handler for headaches and complaints about not being able to see the board at the front of the room in her classes. We got an appointment quickly, and the office staff were friendly and efficient, but what happened next was a surprise. I expected to be sold another pair of glasses with an updated prescription, but that did not turn out to be the case. After a very thorough exam, a careful discussion with us, and analysis of the current prescription, Dr. Handler suggested my daughter try working without any glasses at all! I've been with Dr. Handler for several years now. She is amazing. She helps me with contacts & glasses, blurry vision from migraines, and most recently super dry eyes. She's not easy to get an appt with but worth the wait. I get really confused and have trouble communicating sometimes and she's always been patient with me, kind - even when I wouldn't be. Dr. Handler just completed my cataract surgery. I cannot write enough words of praise for her and her office staff. The whole experience, from my initial visit to the post-op visit today, was such a positive experience. She is very professional and very considerate of the patient. I have serious astigmatism. Both eyes. My parents both developed cataracts as well as my older brother. Eyeglasses tend to bug the bridge of my nose. I can't even wear 3D glasses at a movie without getting annoyed. Without glasses or contacts I'm okay to read but not to do much else. Just forgetabout driving. Particularly at night. Dr. Handler has given me the clearest vision I can remember having. With eyeglasses (lightweight ones) as well as with contacts. The astigmatism makes my eyes a challenging fit for contacts. I'm going back in tomorrow to pick my newest ones up. One thing I greatly appreciate about Dr. Handler is her attitude while checking my vision. I was a patient of Dr. Taunton a few years ago. He seemed annoyed to give me time to blink while checking my vision. Dr. Handler takes her time. She gives you a chance to blink. She's a pleasure to deal with. She's also always been generous about letting us fill of prescriptions for eyeglasses at Costco. Taunton's office forced us to buy our first set of glasses at his place. Free parking right there in their underground parking. That's a pretty nice thing to find in their busy end of Hillcrest. An excellent ophthalmologist and a wonderful person. read more

First off, Dr. Handler and her staff are amazing. I feel very lucky to have met her, and meeting her was quite the journey. In late October I woke up with what was determined by my family practitioner to be conjunctivitis or "pink eye." After a week of meds the pink eye had disappeared but then quickly came back, and then, eventually, about two weeks later, with a different type of pain: a scratching/scraping/annoying pain on the inside of my eyelid. At which point I went back to the family practitioner who then, after looking at the eye, referred me, as she could not determine the exact cause, eventually to the Vision Care and Correction Location on 4th Ave. Short story is after three more weeks I still had no relief. There were assorted visits, two doctors who could not determine the cause, several drops, tests and ointments, and then into the Christmas season, I still had no relief. Just pain, blurred vision, and an icky feeling that was not going away. The day after Christmas I couldn't take it anymore. I called in to the Vision Care office and left a message on the voice recording complaining of pain, and not expecting any sort of return call. I mean it was the day after Christmas and I knew my doctor was on vacation, but I had to try. Much to my surprise, I got a call back from Apryl, who discussed my symptoms and meds, and hearing what she did, quickly got me in to see Dr. Handler, who was covering the entire office. I was so impressed as I did not expect anything to happen during Christmas week and here I was getting medical attention! I will avoid the medical terms and procedures she did that first day, but Dr. Handler had different theories from my previous doctors on what be causing the pain and developed an action plan. Two weeks later the pain was finally gone and we have that plan moving forward to determine what the real cause of the pain is. I feel soooo much better! During this time Dr. Handler has been available to help with prescriptions, insurance, and even talk on the phone reviewing my protocol! All said, I truly feel blessed to have met D. Handler and the staff at Vision Care. They are friendly, seem to really care and have a sense of urgency. I wouldn't want to leave anyone out, but Apryl especially has been super helpful. Whether it is checking on insurance forms, or relaying info to Dr. Handler, she takes time to call and email, and speak to me directly about needs and next steps. I could go on and I wish I could write as well as I feel about Dr. Handler's office. Again, they are simply amazing! read more

I have worked in the medical profession, for more years than I care to admit. Dr. Handler is kind and caring and certainly as well trained as any ophthalmologist I have seen. Her office staff is also well trained and do everything in their power to keep the patients happy. I developed an eye infection in October of 2016 and Dr. Handler has been working with me this entire time, to not only heal the infection, but also to keep me as comfortable as possible. I'm sure I have been driving her crazy. She never let on. The infection has healed, but I need surgery and she gladly gave me a name to follow up. In the meantime, she has to continue treating me. I was so scared of having cataract surgery that I actually visited 2 different doctors and had phone conversations with several more before landing on Dr Handler. First of all I was able to get an appointment quickly and the validated parking in a convenient location made it a breeze for visiting the office. The staff is so warm and encouraging. They are able to set up all the complicated exam things quickly in a very professional manner. They were so nice I almost felt like I was visiting friends! Dr Handler is very welcoming and put me at ease immediately. I was able to schedule the 1st surgery fairly soon after the 1st visit. She said she would take good care of me and she sure did. The surgery was across the street in the Scripps Pavilion. I had a fabulous anesthesiologist Dr Hoban. If you can get him you are in luck. The whole experience there in the surgery center was great- the nurses got me settled in & before I knew it the surgery was over and my friend was there to take me home. I had such a feeling of well being afterward like why was I so freaked out to do it in the first place. I could not believe Dr Handler when she said I could drive myself to the next day follow up appt but I was able to do it! I had the 1st surgery July 11 and the 2nd eye August 8. Since then my distance vision is 20/20 in each eye. I can't believe the things I can see now that were impossible before. Gee the combo lock numbers on the trash dumpsters! That used to be a nightmare with sunglasses to get out there & then regular glasses to try to find the numbers & back to sunglasses. Yikes. If you are hesitating take it from me- get it done; you will be so pleased. read more

I have had a lifetime of eye challenges starting with a lazy eye, so getting an accurate refraction is critical to my ability to do my work and see comfortably in general. I had to dismiss two ophthalmologists on my journey to finding Dr. Handler, who was referred to me by a neighbor. Extremely rude doctor and front desk staff with bogus last-minute rescheduling requests. Doctor was unaware of best practices for my condition and questioned my ability to pay for the imaging I reminded her was part of the standard screening battery for my condition.
