My husband and I recently moved to a retirement community from a much larger house. Given the new space constraints, my baby grand piano could not make the transition with us. Our rooms are considerably smaller and the distance between the Living Room T.V. and a spare room is now much closer. That began my search for a smaller piano and eventually led me to consider a digital piano with headphone capabilities. We had the good fortune to move to an apartment directly above a phenomenal piano player and I sought her out for advice. Her apartment is the same size as ours so she knew exactly what space we had available. She invited me to look at her own pianos, among them a baby grand and a Yamaha Clavinova, which she plays fequently. She demonstrated some of the unique features of the Clavinova and the sound quality was astounding. Any reservations I had about a digital piano versus an acoustic piano flew out the window. When I said I was considering Greene Music, she said that was an excellent choice. I spoke by phone with Ken at Greene Music who spent a great deal of time getting a clear understanding of what I thought I might want and what I actually needed. I told him I hadn't opened a music book in years and wasn't sure I could still find middle C on a keyboard! He invited me to visit the store so I could test pianos that would fit my needs and budget. To say Ken is a consummate authority on pianos would be an understatement! Sitting at the Clavinova, he demonstrated the beautiful sound quality and several of the features I knew I would enjoy. He also had me test the Yamaha headphones and there was none of the usual hiss or static you get with lesser models. I was astounded at the clarity of the music with headphones on. I could have listened to him play all day but, ultimately, he had me "sit in the driver's seat" as he walked me through many of the things he had just showed me. It was so much easier than I thought and I was almost convinced I knew what I was doing! I told him I would probably forget some of the things I learned that day but he promised that was not going to happen. He assured me I will never be without the support I need while I learn to navigate the features of this amazing digital piano and beyond. I won't have the actual Clavinova for 7 to 10 days but I'm eagerly waiting its arrival. I came home from the store so excited that my husband is jokingly talking about having recitals and inviting the neighbors. I doubt that's ever going to happen but it'll be fun trying! Here I am one year later waiting on the waitlist for the only technician in town to come take a look at the key that already started producing ridiculous noise. Technicians' availability can range from weeks up to several months. And I only have being playing the instrument for a couple hours at most, during the days off (wiping every dust speck and treating it like a rare gem). Shopper! Avoid Yamaha (and Roland) when it comes to digital pianos, they will make you consider giving up on music. P.S. They took away all packaging material and set up the piano exactly where my mom wanted it.
