A touristy but quaint place to have a light sandwich and some coffee or tea. They also have an assortment of pastries and delicious desserts. Right off this little town square in Quebec city, it's a great spot for people watching, and to take a break from traipsing across the city.
La Maison Smith at 23 Rue Notre-Dame in the heart of Old Quebec City is pure magic. I'm still thinking about it weeks later. Picture this: soft snow falling on the cobblestone streets of Petit-Champlain, fairy lights glowing, and the warm light spilling out of this beautiful little café. I ducked in both mornings of my short trip and could have happily stayed all day. The interior is perfect Québécois charm: exposed stone walls, wooden beams, cozy lighting, and that unbeatable smell of fresh baking. First morning I ordered the pistachio latte and the quiche Florentine. I would legitimately sell my firstborn for that pistachio latte: silky, perfectly balanced, with a rich, natural pistachio flavor that no syrup could ever match. One sip and I was ruined for life. The quiche was flawless: buttery, flaky crust, creamy spinach-and-cheese filling, baked to golden perfection. Absolute breakfast heaven. I braved a full-on snowglobe blizzard the next morning just to come back. This time I paired the same life-changing pistachio latte with the almond croissant. I'd hand over my other kid for daily access to these croissants (kidding... mostly). Impossibly crisp and flaky outside, cloud-soft inside, generously stuffed with fragrant almond paste, topped with toasted almonds and powdered sugar. I ate it slowly by the window while the snow piled up on Rue Notre-Dame and honestly felt like the luckiest person alive. The baristas were friendly, the vibe warm and unhurried, and everything was flawless. If you're in Quebec City, make La Maison Smith non-negotiable (and budget time to visit at least twice). Five stars isn't enough. This place is winter-morning perfection.
if you are at Royale Place, you must have coffee here. sitting outside, having coffee or a croissant, viewing the oldest church in North America, and feeling like you went back by at least 100 years... what a feeling. This location is a must for having a coffee during a romantic walk in Petit Champlain. You can sit on the terrace in the heart of Place-Royale, where Quebec City was founded. We ordered a pistachio Donut, Crepe, and coffee. Man, this donut- nothing I ever had... too good. I ordered more to have it for dessert after dinner. This casual and attractive café right on the corner of scenic Place Royale is a great place to stop for an afternoon pick-me-up, be it coffee or various indulgent sweets. For a light lunch, there are yummy sandwiches, quiches, and soups. There are other branches elsewhere in the city that are just as good, just not as scenic as this.
NIce coffee break while sightseeing around Quebec. There are a few locations in the city, but I think this one has the most outdoor seating from what I saw. The matcha latte was refreshing and the ice coffee was great. We also shared a raspberry pastry. They were pretty busy with a long line but it moved along quickly. Service was friendly and with a smile.
Cute cafe at a wonderfully stunning location. Perfect to grab a drink and pastry and sit out front on a nice day and people watch and take in the lovely atmosphere. We came here multiple times on our trip to start our days and enjoy a peaceful caffeine moment before starting our sight seeing for the day. Service was very quick and friendly. And the pastries were super tasty. Loved their pistachio latte.
Location, location, location! Perfect place to stop and have a cup of coffee with a chocolate almond croissant and take in the historic square. Excellent coffee and hard working baristas trying to keep up with the orders.
If you're in Quebec City, this is a lovely patisserie in a lovely square, where you can sit with a coffee and something sweet for a while and get in some sun. My something sweet is pictured below and was rich and lemony and delicious.
I can't say enough good things about the food here! I visited Quebec City with my parents this past December, and we walked into La Maison because it was warm and inviting. We ordered a few pieces of vegetarian quiche, zucchini soup, and a round of hot chocolate. I don't believe I've had such good food out in a while. The hot chocolate was absolutely delicious! They use real chocolate instead of the powdered stuff, and it's the best I've had. And we couldn't get over how rich the quiche was. The recipe was perfect, and it was baked beautifully. After the quiche, we had to try dessert! So I ordered a slice of pecan pie, and we shared a plate of macarons. Even the desserts were incredible! If you could eat anywhere in Old Quebec, you would do yourself a favor by going here! It's also close to some historical landmarks, making it an easy addition for out of towners.
It'll do in a pinch if you need a quick place to stop for your morning pastry or cup of coffee before work. Tourists and locals alike clearly love this place as well as the other La Maison Smith cafés around QC. These aren't the best pastries though. Don't believe the reviews. They're good, but not great. They're made off-site and delivered to all of their shops and not created by masters of pastry. And there is a difference. I still came here a couple of times because it's far far better than Starbucks and conveniently located. I'd still recommend. But don't vacation in QC, eat these pastries, and then tell your friends about the authentic French pastries you ate. Go to a pâtisserie like Le Croquembouche and then tell them that.
Busy. Too busy. Beautiful spot in old quebec. Cold coffee poorly made. Rude staff. I frequent this place every time I am in quebec city bc of the awesome location in the center of place royale in lower town quebec. But my last visit this August was slightly awful. Staff were rude and were messing up orders so much. They have a long wait pretty much at all times of day. But they also don't really care if they even get your order right. I heard of almost 4 people in front of me getting their orders wrong or mixed up. It took over 45 min to order and get my drink. And once I got it, it was cold, placed in a to go cup when I was given the option to drink there with a mug. (Like don't give me the option then ignore my request downright afterwards). It also was pretty bland and tasteless. You go here for the atmosphere but it's just for the location. It probably was my worst coffee experience in all of quebec city. If you're okay for long waits, crowds, messed up coffee orders and cold coffee. Then this is the place to go.

We were lucky to find this Cafe as it was the only one open early in the morning. I originally came here just for a coffee... However the croissants were just massive and we had to try one. They were just so delicious we ended up coming back later on in the evening to buy more croissants to take home with us. The evening staff were super friendly and fun to joke around with. I would definitely recommend this place! read more

I couldn't find a single reason not to like this place.I absolutely loved this cafe for all the right reasons. The food, coffee, location, ambience and service are all top notch.Coming here a few hours prior to my dinner was my daily highlight of the trip. I am a very experimental person with food but if I like something at a certain restaurant I like to repeat that over and over again.And here I got totaled obsessed with the plain croissants served with homemade jam and butter.Their jam is absolutely divine.The croissants were soft from inside and crispy on the outside.I would say one of the bests I have had in a long time.Their lattes were hot and delicious. I also tried waffle which I saw everyone buying here.They were amazing too but I preferred my croissant and jam over it.Last but not the least I bought a box of assorted macaroons which were fresh and delicious.My mini me enjoyed them throughly. The staff is super friendly and helpful even though they are very busy.The location is gorgeous right in the center of everything and there is plenty of seating indoors and outdoor.I sat outdoors since it was a beautiful day and I wanted to soak in every bit of the sunshine. read more

Went to this place based on high recommendations for hot chocolates and coffees..sad to say I was disappointed! Firstly even though we decided to drink there - they gave us the drinks in take away cups rather than ceramic ones, because they were too lazy to wash maybe ! We ordered a regular hot chocolate and a coffee. The hot chocolate was not hot (which is not okay!) It was luke warm at the best and taste wise very average. So was the coffee - very okay. There were some assortment of bakery products and macrons. We tried the exotic macaron, which was good! Well balanced sweet and with apricot tang. $$ wise it is slightly on the expensive end. The seating is very much like a Parisian cafe with out door tables and cutesy insides. read more

Amazing and best almond croissants I've ever had in my life! We ordered one almond croissant on a weekend morning and had to go back for another. Perfectly crisp, and so well stuffed with almond paste. Great location in Quebec City. This is a must visit place! read more
This the heart of the Village! The coffee is strong, the croissants are delicious, the wifi is great and the menu options are plentiful. I would recommend stopping in to grab a bite and people watch. By the way, it's quite busy, so expect some delay with your coffee order while you're here. Also, bathrooms are several doors down. But not too bad overall! read more

A wonderful breakfast experience. The quaint and calm environment is lovely, we sat outside with our orders of brownies, cheesecake and chocolate almond croissant. It was a beautiful dewy morning, all the staff were quite friendly and before we finished our order they were already plating our food. The orange juice we had ordered was divine, it didn't have any pulp but it tasted like you were biting into the most juicy and flavourful orange slice in the universe, we ended up buying two more for our cruise within the next hour. The brownies were a shock, they were strong but not too chocolate or dry. They were thin so it was more of a light breakfast that had a significant crunch when bitten with the pecan topping. The chocolate almond croissant was quite good, the chocolate wasn't overpowering, and it was moist and filling. The cheesecake was very rich, a bit too much, quite thick, but a lovely taste. Our group would definitely come again, especially for the delicious orange juice! read more

The outdoor seating in the square was a pleasant enough atmosphere to sip coffee, but the croissants and pastry were not fresh. The hardworking staff was kept busy managing the steady influx of tourists (and tours) the whole time. read more
I wanted to find a bakery and the reviews led me here. I gave this a 3 instead of a 4 because of customer service. - Macarons: The macarons here are from a bakery company from Montreal. They are very tasty and have plenty of variety! I recommend the coconut, salted caramel, and red velvet. - Chocolate Almond Croissant: so good! Nice combo and balance of the two flavors with a delicious buttery crust. Get it warmed up and you won't regret it! - Hot chocolate: good, but pretty standard. It did its job. - Customer service: one person rang me up then left mid-transaction to start my drink. I asked he new person for my receipt and she said it wasn't time yet then finished the transaction and moved on to the next person. I asked for the receipt again and she just ignored me. It was very rude and made me bump this experience to a 3/5 when it could've been 4/5. Oh well. If you need to stop by a café, go to the other Café Maison locations, they are much nicer! read more

I stumbled upon this cafe after stopping in the Hockey store a few doors down, and I knew before I left Québec I would stop into this cafe. My best friend and I stopped in there to see what it was about, and it is just adorable in there. From the mason jar lighting to mini mugs on the wall, it is a warm inviting atmosphere. I was really excited about their large variety of flavors of macaroons. I was able to try a nice variety of them and it was very good. Their staff is very friendly and gives suggestions of their menu which was really nice (and they speak really well in English which is a plus because I do not speak French). I ordered a mocha and it was delicious - this is an establishment that I would go to again to try more of their menu options. read more

This is a nice breakfast stop. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is excellent and hot chocolate and teas are OMG great. Only downfall is the space is small and I had to stand up to eat as inside was packed. read more

We had spent a couple hrs touring the old city during Carnaval and it was getting to be time to warm up with a hot drink when we stumbled on this little cafe. Immediately as we went in the warm friendly and helpful staff made us feel as tho we had been regulars for yrs. We took their suggestions and had a wonderful warming snack. The Hazelnut latte was great but it's a must to have the hot chocolate! Not filled with sugar like most are this is the real deal, the pastries where delicious, once again not loaded with sugar so you can enjoy the fruit flavour in the fruit cake and dipping the warm cake in the maple syrup was fantastic! The cinnamon buns are just right as well. A wonderful break during our great day in Quebec!! I will definitely remember this cafe long after I've returned home. read more
Nice coffee place at Place Royal. Good coffee, nice outdoor seating, there was a guy playing guitar nearby. Mom and I had a good time, at least until the rain started. Removing one star because the pastry was a bit stale. read more
If you say bakery, I will say where... It's almost like we were meant to be together. I was visiting Quebec city and of course one of the goals was to find the best bakeries in town. I originally just came in for coffee but was distracted by all the sweets. They had a Matcha cookie out on display and we're giving samples. Matcha is not my favorite flavor and probably not a cookie I would normally choose. However, when I tasted the cookie it was amazing. The matcha cookie was soft and flavorful. Winner, winner, chicken dinner! We also had an almond chocolate, croissant. The croissant was soft and flakey just what fresh should taste like. This bakery serves quality food! Along with the great food was their location. They had seating inside and out with perfect ambiance to go with. We sat on the patio area which was a great place to people watch and enjoy the city. Even though I was blown away by the cookie my coffee was delicious too. Served hot with my special request of almond milk. The language in Quebec City is French but they understood English too. This is very helpful when no one understands you! I got great customer service! My only complaint was I didn't order more! If you have a sweet tooth like me, this place is a must! read more

What can be better than rich hot chocolate on a cold fall evening? In my search for the best hot chocolate in Quebec City, I found this place on yelp. I asked them to make it less sweet. It was really good. They make it with chocolate ganache. Also had the chocolate cake which was good as well. read more

Came here for a coffee and croissant while checking out the city. Excellent service, and the cashier spoke enough English to make ordering easy. Love that they have coconut milk as an option. I got a misto with coco milk and hubs had an americano. I also wanted something sweet so while the cakes all looked delicious, I decided on a chocolate croissant. Coffees were excellent but my croissant was not soft at all. So I went inside and asked if I could get something else and just pay the difference (a chocolate Fronde I think it was called? Chocolate twist with sugar crystals on it). They were super friendly and kindly allowed me to have the Fronde without paying the upcharge. They apologized also a few times and wanted to make sure I was happy. There are a few seats inside, but the highlight is the patio. Little cafe tables, great view and lots of savory and sweet options for food. Great drink selection. Love this little gem even though it's right in the heart of tourist crazy. Ended up here after all the recommendations from locals. It was quite busy on a Sunday morning for breakfast. I asked the barista what their most famous coffee is and she recommended the Maple Latte which I got with a chocolate croissant. My friend got their regular drip coffee with the butter croissant. He said they were pretty good. My coffee was quite good since I like it on the sweeter side. The croissant was mediocre with a very slight filling of dark chocolate. I did ask for it to be warmed but I'm not sure if they didn't warm it or it just got cold by the time they gave me my coffee. Hence I didn't end up enjoying it much. I mean, I've had better croissants before... Will I be going back for the coffee? Probably not... there seems to be a lot more options out therefor similar things. read more

Cute, clean cafe right in the middle of Place Royale beside Notre Dame des Victoires church. I had to stop here before leaving to get my matcha fix. Matcha latte wasn't strong enough for me but it came in a huge soup bowl basically. Matcha cookie $3.50 was baked very well but I would've been fine with taking a sample from the tray they brought out after we got our cookie. Hot chocolate wasn't hot enough but it had a nice strong chocolate flavour. The $2.60 croissants are large. Major plus was free wifi! read more
