Saturday morning and a great cup of coffee is what Nektar delivered. We had the medium mokkaccino ( mocha) with almond milk, half decaf ( my love of coffee is for its flavor but I can do without the heart palpitations) and a medium Americano. We also shared a raspberry chocolate pastry which was okay. Maybe better if it was toasted but it wasn't offered as an option. My mocha cappuccino was deep in flavor and cocoa powder, not syrup, was used. Even with the almond milk it was still rich and the milk to coffee ratio was just right. The americano was a good cup. Interior is clean, modern and cozy. Seating is generous and spacious. Their counter is nice and centered. Our barista was efficient and friendly. Delicious, smooth coffee! I really appreciate that the drinks are made with care and the space is cozy inside. My husband enjoyed his cold brew, and we both loved our Americanos. Came to Nektar after it was highly recommended by my project manager and generally, it did not disappoint. I really liked the wall of coffee and the cafe itself was modern, but cozy. I also liked how the barista would ring up one person at a time and then make their drink. My only observation was that my cappuccino could have been better on the milk side of things. The foam was quite loose and it gave more of a latte vibe. There was only one person working, but he was quick to give us our order. Overall the space is very beautiful, clean, and relaxed, although on a Monday afternoon there were only 3 other people. The staff is very friendly and the coffee is fantastic. I hung out in the shop for a bit with my laptop. A great coffee spot in the Saint - Roche area of Quebec City. When we came there were many locals just sitting around drinking coffee and getting work done on their laptops. The space is light and airy so if I lived in the area I could see myself hunkering down to to get some work done. I had a classic latte which was good. This is saying a lot given that my wife and I have visited easily over 100 coffee shops around the world and are EXTREMELY picky when it comes to coffee. The coffee here is strong, not the we're trying to make a point and kill you strong. More like the I want my espresso with some bite strong, as in the perfect amount of strong. These people knew how to pull a shot, both the cappuccino and the iced latte were some of the best I had ever had, and neither of them tasted watered down at all they were both as close to perfect creations I you could have gotten. This place also felt like a coffee shop, I honestly like my coffee shops large, where multiple groups of people can gather to talk, hang out, play games, or just enjoy the perfect cup of coffee together. This place definitely had that vibe; it could easily several large groups of people. There were plenty of tables and chairs, along with a few couches, soft chairs, and bar style seating. Walking in I immediately wanted to sit down and take my time with our coffee; unfortunately I didn't have the luxury of time as we had someplace to be shortly but I wish I could go back just to enjoy the atmosphere. I love being in a coffee shop almost as much as I like drinking coffee so finding a great example of each in the same location was a real treat. They also had a lot of odd coffee "creations". They had mugs, t-shirts (ridiculously cheap t-shirts I might add, they were less than $10 so my wife and I each bought one), coffee of all varieties, and one coffee oddity I just had to try; pulped coffee. It comes in a large bag and, as the wonderful barista explained to me, you brew it like tea by adding hot water and letting it steep for 8 minutes. I have never tried this method of coffee and was so excited about trying coffee a new "way", this is incredibly rare given all the coffee we drink. Overall this place was just amazing. It easily earns its way into the list of best coffee houses I have ever visited; joined the ranks of truly legendary coffee houses like Two Story Coffeehouse in Athens Georgia and Bold Bean Coffee in Jacksonville Florida. It is depressing that I will almost certainly never get the chance to visit this place again. read more

On a Saturday afternoon, my husband had an Americano and I had a Latte, both Grand Cru, referring to the rotating selection of premium bean they offer alongside their regular espresso. Although we both found the Guatemalan variety they served that day to be a bit softer taste-wise than what we are used to, we enjoyed the coffee overall. The noise level was average and very easy to bear with even as the store was completely filled up (to the rim!) with studious college and university students. Location: In St. Roch, a neighborhood similar to the Plateau in Montreal. Actually, the street itself reminds me more of St. Catherine street but I digress. It's 10-15 minute walk from the old town. I mean, you really can't go wrong with either bean unless the barista sucks, and this most certainly was NOT the case. Thanks to Nektar's excellent bean selection, I discovered a new favorite: Pilot (Canadian, no less). I went with the Macchiato 'grand cru' which utilizes a special blend of Pilot (made specifically for Nektar). What can I say? Nektar's Macchiato rivals a coffee house that is near and dear to my heart - Olimpico. Don't tell Vince! But seriously, amazing coffee - these guys know what they're doing. Service: Great! The fancy Americano I got here yesterday was delicious and I'm in a different city now thinking about it and wishing I can have another! They have special grounds on regularly that cost a bit extra than their house grounds, one for filtered coffee (not sure if this is drip coffee or another brewing method) and one for the espresso. I tried the espresso as an Americano and it was amazing. I got a double shot. They don't put much water in compared to other cafes--they only added about half the cup--but I asked for more to water it down only slightly and it was amazing. It tasted great the way they made it but I wanted a bit more water (and maybe for it to last longer because it was so good?). I had it black, no dairy or sugar or anything. It was perfect that way. You could taste the distinct flavour notes. I'm no coffee sommelière or anything so describing this stuff for me would be way off but I tasted sweetness, floral, chocolate... Maybe those aren't the flavour notes at all. I wouldn't know. The flavour notes aren't "tastes like burning" like a lot of places. I love great coffee and this is it. After a few mediocre cafe experiences in Quebec, we were wandering around and noticed a "Clever" coffee dripper in the window of this shop. We decided to swing back around later in the day for an attempt at a good cup of coffee in the city. The cafe itself was cute, although they seemed to be remodeling - there was plastic on one of the walls, which only slightly took away from the atmosphere of the place. Behind the counter, there were a number of coffees on display, and I had high hopes for trying something new and exciting. To my disappointment, they only had two options: regular drip or espresso. I chose black coffee, and it was far better than anything we'd had so far (I have no recollection of what type of coffee it was - very bright though). I was just hoping for some more options, since they appeared to have a number of different beans and we'd definitely seen a different method of brewing when we passed by the first time. There was a bit of a language barrier, so they might offer other options at different times of the day. If you're looking for good coffee in Quebec, I'd head here. I am a coffee snob. After working as a barista at a European-style coffee shop in Cambridge, I have very high standards. The barista here made me two of the finest cappuccinos I've ever had. They were a little on the wet side, but that is to be expected in a latte-crazed world. I liked everything about this cafe. The croissant was excellent, the coffee was perfect, the employees were professional and kind, and I was able to sit and watch the beautiful HD flatscreen TV show a national geographic documentary about the galapagos (with the sound off). When I go to expensive coffee places, I go for the atmosphere because I'm not much of a coffee drinker. My three favourite things about Nektar were the awesome music (wasn't just indie, folk, jazz or Christmas music like it normally is at most coffee places), the TV in between 2 couches playing a video loop of an adorable kitten in front of a fireplace, and the inviting, trendy but unpretentious decor. We hit up Nektar after eating a meal at Le Cercle across the street. I ordered a matcha latte, which was good - made how matcha is supposed to be made. It was just the way I like it after adding one sugar. My companion ordered a latte and a short espresso, which he said was delicious. The Wi-Fi was fast and the atmosphere was really lovely.
