When you walk in you're immediately greeted by a smell of delicious food and a beautiful and quirky interior. They have many drinks and snacks based on the Filipino and El Salvadorian roots of the restaurant! We've had many items off the menu but our favorites are the tocilog, longaniza, garlic rice, and tamal de elote. Portions are large and always fresh. I've been fortunate to get to fly home to the Philippines every so often but haven't been able to do so over the last couple years because of the pandemic. I have missed Filipino food so dearly, so finding La Mesa felt like stumbling upon a fresh lagoon in the middle of the desert. I've tried a number of their dishes already but have to say that the longsilog is my favorite. The garlicky sinangag paired with the sticky sweet-savory longganisa just brings me back to eating breakfast with my mom. Truly my only wish is for this to be more of a sit-down restaurant, mainly because I feel like some of the offerings would be much better enjoyed straight from the kitchen. Most recently, my daing na bangus was cold by the end of my 15 minute drive home, but I'm sure the freezing winter is to blame for that. It may be time to invest in one of those insulated food bags for optimum yums. read more

Just finished an after hike lunch with Lisa E. Worked up an appetite and I rationalized that pork belly was the correct fuel my body was calling for. Those pork belly tacos with crispy onion and avocado were sublime. The fatty bits of pork meltingly tender and the onions adding a perfect textural contrast. The pupusas were incredible. Flavors were on point. Very yummy! Shrimp tacos were just as delish. Perfectly seared/sautéed shrimp with fresh avocado, some cabbage and some type of sauce with excellent flavor. The tortilla was good as well. The pupusas came with a salsa that was fresh and delicious. I put it on both the pupusas and tacos. It paired well with the shrimp. The green sauce had a kick but was as equally delish! I especially liked the green sauce that came with the shrimp and the garlic vinaigrette sauce that came with the fried yuca. Everything was delicious. They also have a great selection of imported juices and sodas in the refrigerators. I can't wait to go back and try other dishes. They have a great variety of fusion dishes . I ordered the pollo pupusa with mozzarella cheese with chicken, the chicken empanadas, which were huge and the Carne Asada Plate centroamerica-style which is a grilled sirloin beef, yellow rice, and a side of house curtido salad. The food was fresh and the servers were very helpful. I also had chips and guacamole dip. I recommend that you call ahead to order instead of going to the restaurant to order. The vegetable tacos and the pork tacos are a favorite and the tres leches for dessert is a must. Hands down the best tres leches I've had on Long Island. First time coming here. We paid $10 (plus tax) for the "Too Good to Go" food package service, which basically avoids wasted food by selling it cheaply at night so it is not thrown out when closing for the night. Generally you are supposed to get roughly 2 - 3 times the value of what you pay. I bring it home and get what I feel was essentially a $12 meal for $10. While the food was good, I definitely feel overcharged and under served. I got 1 chicken leg, spanish rice, 1 $4 empanada, and something similar to cole slaw without the mayonnaise. I actually wouldn't mind going there during daytime hours for a full meal, but do feel ripped off on this Too Good deal to do it again with them. We previously ordered this deal from Phil's Pizza in Wantagh, and for $6.50 got 4 specialty pizza slices that would have cost us around $20 if bought in store. Live and learn. read more

There were many options of precooked food, of which everything looked fresh. I quickly realized this was a mix of Central American foods. I noticed Salvadoran Pupusas & slaw, Honduran Baleadas, Mexican Corn & even Filipino Pork Adobo. Soooo many options! I ordered 2 medium plates. Son ordered crispy fried chicken, Chicharron, ribs, yellow rice & beans. I couldn't decide so I got the Lumpia Shanghai, Adobo Rice(Do It!), White Rice, Adobo Pork, Oxtails, Crispy Fried Chicken & Ribs with plantains. I really enjoyed the pickled vegetables & slaw. They charged us a dollar to sit in their restaurant because they have to use the dishwasher..... I've never been charged to sit in a restaurant. Grant it, it's just $1.00 but to say because we have to use the dishwasher. And then charged us more than they should for the drinks and the dishes that was ordered. Very small place, 4 tables total and very close to each other. Came with the intention to dine in but I don't like the idea of being packed in like a sardine when sitting in a place. Price wise is premium so think outside of regularly priced pupusas. Bring cash it's cheaper if you pay in cash The decorations are cute and have a casita feel. Now on to the food, the empanadas lack in flavor Atleast the chicken ones, the green sauce you get make the empanada without it it's disappointing. I went for pupusas, the pupusas are real thick compared to the traditional thin ones. I wish they were crispy vs the pancake texture you get here. I rate this dish here a 6.5 out of 10 wish it had more flavor the red sauce taste kind of marineraishhh. Overall the food is edible some things to improve. La Mesa has been on my list of must haves for a while now and so happy I stopped by to grab a bite to eat. I went during lunch time and the kitchen was backed up - 30 min wait. Which is fine because they have a hot bar you can chose from if you don't feel like waiting. I opted for a medium plate which is a lot of food but of course I ate it all because it was all good lol. I started with yellow rice then added beans, sweet plantains, pernil and fried chicken chunks. When I asked for the pernil he asked me if I wanted skin with it and the answer is always yes!!!! As he cut the skin with a pair of scissors all you hear is the crispness of it. It was so crispy and gooey in fat it just melts in your mouth. The pernil was moist and he added atleast 1/2 a lb if it ok my plate. The fried chicken was a game changer with a vinegar citrus kick and cut into bite size pieces is a must get. We got way too many dishes from here and it was way too much good for the 5 of us. Everything was DELICIOUS, fresh, generous and so flavorful. This is our new favorite spot. Everything was made with love and we could just taste how much passion was in the food. This is not a sit down place, but us strictly take out only. We called to make a large order and they told us 1 hour. So we picked up the food at 7pm and the food was still really hot. I've never had longanisa before, but the burrito was one of my favorites. It's just an insanely juicy and flavorful sausage. The pork street sticks, and empanadas were really good too. Really crispy and cooked perfectly in ghe inside. We definitely will try some of the other menu items from here. They're prices are fair, and these people care about the food. Very disappointed in the service! Good is usually good but this time I ordered and waited over an hour only to find out my food was sitting on the counter for 20 minutes and nobody was packing. Finally I say something and he decides to pack it and send me on my way. I drive 40 minutes home only to find out I received the wrong food. When I called up I was told there was nothing they could do for me so they kept my money and I got food I didn't want. Ended up throwing it out!
