La Michoacana is off the beaten path, standing by itself and surrounded by tax offices and wire transfer shops, in what I would call the inner guts of the foregone Little Havana, and what has become Little Honduras/Nicaragua. This is probably not a nice area to walk around, not because it is crime full, but because there is nothing nice to look at. Only those who work around here visit La Michoacana, as well as the residents of the nearby areas. People may be puzzled to figure out how La Michoacana has survived. But if you stop by, you will figure it out right away. First, the place looks awesome, with lots of original art work depicting pop Mexican art, artwork that is also used as menus. Second, they are extremely helpful, because they are a family run business. And third, they have lots of food available. As far as foods available, this will be elaborate. This place labels itself as an ice cream shop. They sell ice creams, paletas, raspados, and some things I cannot pronounce or don't have the correct word for. Flavors include tequila, jamaica, horchata, mango, etc. Paletas (fruit/ice cream bars) come in arroz con leche, mango, etc. There are many flavors available but unfortunately I can't remember them all. But that is not all at La Michoacana. They also serve tacos, tortas, quesadillas, and something I have never seen, chicharrones, which is a large pork rind covered with all types of meats and vegetables and sauces. Interesting. Everything is made in house, fresh, and daily. But that is not all. Sorry for being redundant, but fresh juices, Mexican sodas, regular sodas are also available. And more importantly, they have a huge collection of Mexican candy. This place could also be a candy shop just by the amount of imported candy available. If you come here for Mexican candy only, you will most likely be equally satisfied. La Michoacana is definitively a look into Mexican culture. Candy, pops, drinks, food, this place is not only foodie heaven, it is also kids heaven. I see how the area has impacted the popularity of this ice cream shop, but this place is Mexico in Miami. And they have paletas. Yes, they do.

So glad we found this spot ! Me and my boyfriend went in to just get one thing but, decided to stay for food and even left the place with snacks for later. First went in for the chamoyada, they were premade(which I was a little disappointed at first) but found out they made there there and it's ALL natural. I found out they have this nanche flavored ice cream, ITS A MUST.(nanche is a common fruit in Mexico) it was so natural and homeade , the seeds were still in it! And good chunks of the fruit itself. We also tried the queso fresa and mamay flavor(both were so good) While sitting there another customer ordered fresh tacos, the tortillas are homemade, so I HAD to get an order. You don't find too many places that make homemade tacos, so we ordered 3 tacos asada. My goodness they were delicious. As a snack we also got a chicharron preparado, and left with four popsicles to go, (Wednesday's they have a special on them for 2.25) I must say, this is a hidden jem! We came from Miami Beach and we're looking for some good Mexican food, a bit of a drive from our location but it was well worth of a trip! If in the area you have to check it out !

The service was very inviting. They have everything and more for such a small and quaint venue. The paletas and ice cream flavors are all natural and delicious. I can't wait to go back over and over again. My new favorite spot for an inexpensive treat.

Azucar bills itself as the first homemade Cuban ice cream and I believe it. Get the Abuela Maria. It is their number one seller for a reason: guava, cream cheese, and Maria cookies folded together, and it tastes exactly like something a Cuban grandmother would make if she also happened to be a genius. Cafe con Leche and Mantecado round out the top three and neither disappoints. Real talk on the practical stuff. It is busy and the shop is small, so expect a line and expect to eat standing or perched on the window bench. Prices run about seven to eleven bucks a cup depending on size, but taxes are included in the sticker (rare and appreciated, no surprise math at the register). Cash and Apple Pay both work. Pro move: grab your cup, walk thirty seconds to Domino Park, and eat it watching the old timers slap dominoes. That combo is peak Little Havana. Five stars, would fly back to Miami for the Abuela Maria alone.
