Location, Location, & Location! Quite a nice location!
I discovered this amazing Italian gelato place in the heart of Roma Italy. It was just around the corner from my Bed & Breakfast and just so happened to come across it while out on a run through the streets on a risk October 2014 evening. You could say that this place is a hole in the wall and a place where you could easily overlook a place, if you were not looking. It was safe to say that I have been here twice during my stay in central Roma. It was a simple gelato store with a lot of heart. And while this place is a mom & pop store, its decidedly a great place to visit for your after dinner dessert or gelato for any meal or snack you desire. Any excuse is a great excuse for gelato, am I right? You bet! The experience here was short and sweet. It was basically a take out gelato bar, but they did have seating in the store. Like a Bubbies or a Baskin Robbins, but here in Roma. The dude at the counter was understanding of my very limited Italian. I pointed to the cups and said "this one" or "no, that other one". It was a very interesting cultural exchange, but a fun one, nonetheless.
I would have to recommend the "chocolat", which is what drives me. It's a rich and creamy dark chocolate gelato that was pretty sinful. I never had such a dark chocolate gelato as good as this one. For me, I had a sampler of this one in a large cup in my 1st outing, and returned for a generous pint of the good stuff. La Neviera's version of gelato - at least for the chocolat, was very decadent, delicious, and just so good you just need to try. While there may be some, who just like regular chocolate, this one will knock your socks off. Dark chocolate is the best, especially when it comes to ice cream and gelato. The La Nevirva gelato shop is located near the corner of Via Taranto, Via Taranto 66, to be exact. There is street parking available here, so that's cool, but you just need to catch it at the right time. Several bus routes go through here, so best bet would just get here and never mind how you do. The gelato here is awesome and you would be too, if you got some of this. The prices here are reasonable. The large cup was about 4 euros, whereas the more pricer pint /mini tub of gelato was about 6.5 euros. It wasn't that bad when you are a chocolat addict. Win win and on vacation too!
La Nevirva, like most small mom and pop stores, does not accept credit cards. Cash only, but not a problem! There's about 12 different flavors of gelato to choose from, but when in doubt, I choose chocolat! The dude at the counter was nice and very much professional. The service was nice and expected. The gelato shop was clean and very orderly. It did felt like I was in someone's home, in a way. Not that it was bad, but just the feeling of that made me feel at home - sort of. Yes, this place is good here and definitely recommend having your gelato here. Support local mom and pops are the way to go and you'd get homespun gelato versus the commercial junk from the other peeps. Definitely get your ass over here and get it. Choose your own favorite flavor or mix and match for a great combination!
