This was our second visit to Frigidarium, our first was on a previous visit to Rome several years ago. In that review I warned gelato keeps melting even though it is covered in a chocolate shell. This time when I received my Black Cherry with a chocolate shell, I quickly took my photo and broke into my treat. Still got a little messy on a particularly hot day, but not totally out of control. Even eating quickly I really enjoyed my gelato with those broken pieces of chocolate shell. This previously very popular spot had no line this time, good timing for us. My husband and I had dinner at a pizza spot adjacent to Frigidarium, so we couldn't help stop by for dessert. I remembered it also being highly recommended to me by one of my friends. Frigidarium had a small storefront with room for a few guests at a time. Our timing was lucky, because we had arrived ahead of a big crowd. When I ordered and looked over my shoulder I saw that the line was snaking around the corner. Service was fast though, so people were in and out considerably quickly. I ordered the Frigidarium flavor and one that looked like a berry vanilla swirl with chocolate bits. I'm sure my mouth dropped when they asked if I wanted white chocolate, milk chocolate, or whipped cream at no additional charge. Based on the flavor palate I got white chocolate that becomes a hard shell when poured on. Loved everything about my gelato. Stayed nearby and visited several times. Excellent gelato! The salted caramel (crema bretone), raspberry cheesecake, and dark chocolate were the best. My partner says it's the best dark chocolate gelato they've ever had. They also top with whipped cream or dip in chocolate for you at the end. Usually a long line but not always. I ordered a frappe once which is supposed to be a milkshake, but it was more like melted liquid ice cream, so stick to their gelato. read more

The pistachio was good and creamy, the hazelnut was too sweet for my taste. Yeesh. So the ice cream was very good indeed and fairly priced but the servings weren't over generous. There are no seats and you literally stand in a small space for cheerful service. I always have a cone never a tub. I mean a tub? I can't eat a tub. A tub usually brings a plastic spoon and our planet could forgo more plastic. The chocolate ice cream coating was thin. This place is right by our air b n b and it has a long line around the clock, so we figured we'd try it. Unfortunately, it's not good. It tastes like American ice cream: overly sweet with not enough flavor. There wasn't much variety of flavors to choose from. The tiramisu had a very very faint flavor, and when I ate it with the bacio flavor, I couldn't taste it at all. Mainly, all the gelatos tasted like overly sweetened churned milk, and it didn't really have that gelato consistency. It left us with stomach aches and a longing for a great Italian gelato.
