We were greeted by the giant saltwater aquarium, which my boys went bananas over. Inside of the children's area, there's a plaque that provides the tank information. Also in there are so many fun areas to read. There's a lighthouse, huge tree, dinosaur skeleton, space ship, and much more! There are also plenty of places to sit and read, both quiet and more in the thick of things. Lots of tablets as well. And friendly staff. The library also has a really nice selection of books in certain languages. I wish they had Thai, but it was nice to see representation! I also really appreciate the audio tour. I didn't listen to it this round, but the fact that it's there and that there's so much on display really makes this library special. There's a dedicated YA area that requires a school ID to get into. They also have newspapers and a really snazzy reading room! Next time, I'll use it. While they have swag and books at the book shop, there was no one volunteering there when we went, so we didn't get a chance to go inside. Oh well, that just means we'll have to come back.

The interior is modern, bright, and aesthetically pleasing, making it such a relaxing place to spend time. It's peaceful, well-maintained, and simply a great space to read, learn, and unwind. My favorite part is the children's area. The aquarium is always a hit, and I love the prehistoric theme with the dinosaur fossils and the fun ceiling design. It makes the space feel so imaginative and inviting for kids. The library is also thoughtfully laid out with dedicated areas for children, teens, magazines and publications, plus an extensive collection of books on the second floor. There are even study rooms you can reserve ahead of time, which is a great feature if you need a quiet place to work or study. Parking is convenient since it's next to the sheriff's station and shares a large parking lot, including basement parking.

The City of Hawaiian Gardens Public Library Public Safety Center of Los Angeles County presents…read moreitself as both a library and a public safety center. While I may not fully understand what the "public safety center" designation entails, I do have a clear understanding of the level of professionalism, courtesy, and respect the public should reasonably expect when visiting a public facility. Upon arrival, the parking area was decent in size and appeared adequate for what seems to be a medium-volume library. The property is gated, and visitors share the space with government employees. There is also a small outdoor memorial seating area in front of the library. This is a thoughtful feature for visitors who wish to read outdoors, enjoy a snack, or take a break while working remotely. Inside the library, the Young Adult book collection was one of the stronger aspects of the facility and offered several interesting options for checkout. The seating area is relatively small but appropriate for the size of the library. Most seating consists of clustered couch-style chairs, though electrical outlets are limited and provide low wattage. I do not recall whether the facility offers a filtered water refill station. Unfortunately, the positive aspects of the facility were overshadowed by the conduct of the staff. From the beginning of the visit, staff members were not welcoming. Access to the restroom requires staff intervention to unlock the door, and the overall atmosphere conveyed a sense that patrons were being excessively monitored. The most concerning aspect of the visit involved staff behavior toward me personally. I experienced harassment and inappropriate conduct by an employee. While apparently believing I was not paying attention, an employee approached and sprayed chemicals directly at me. This conduct was inappropriate, unprofessional, and inconsistent with the standards expected in a public-facing institution. The current staff should be evaluated regarding their ability to interact with members of the public professionally, respectfully, and appropriately. The conduct described above warrants review and investigation by management. A public library and public safety center should foster an environment of accessibility, professionalism, and public trust. Based on my experience, that standard was not met.

The library still feels a little on the old school side (the computers could be better updated) Outdoor: Parking is ample. It's right next to a park. It's also right by a major street (Del Amo) so you gotta keep an eye on your little ones when outside. Staff: The staff is fantastic, friendly, welcoming, and they remember you! This makes a difference. Children's area: The library is small but the kids area is nice and big for how small the library is. There are open ended toys and a little floor area to read. There's a sizable kids Spanish books area, which is what we normally go for. Programs: My daughter is in preschool 3x a week so it's hard to make it to the toddler reading times. However, we participated during the summer and it was great. She also participated in the reading program where she could get prizes and she loved that! The reading time usually includes reading, music/dancing, and a craft/art time. The app is super useful and really easy to use. If I forget our library card, I can just use the app. Did I mention how friendly the staff is?!
