So 2 of these kids decided they wanted to learn how to dance hip-hop and jazz, and I heard about City Lights through the family consigliere (i.e. 'wifeypoo'). At first, I was really skeptical about learning hip-hop dance in a studio (I got my background from the streets and underground clubs), and when I first walked into the place and saw an older gentleman that I figured to be somebody's grampa or a live-in security guard, I figured I'd give it maybe 5 minutes before turning around and heading home. Boy.... talk about completely missing the mark and wrongly judging a book by its cover. The guy I saw as I walked in was Duggin Hill, a long-time professional dancer/actor/instructor that had the moves of an 18 year old pro. City Lights is his non-profit dance studio for inner-city kids and teens, and I gotta tell ya...... this goes far into the realm of rhythm, stretching, warm-up, team work, and........ Discipline. Duggin was like a drill sergeant for BOTH kids and parents. That's right, the price of free instruction is parents have to participate in everything. Stretches, jumping jacks, poses, plies, spins, steps.....EVERYTHING. We weren't even past the halfway mark when my body started shaking in the weirdest places, and I thought a kidney was going to dislodge and pop out of my ass. It was the best experience I've had in a long time, and a helluva great time for the kids. Duggin was awesome, focused, dedicated, and never missed a beat. Oh, and parents, park your 'parent' attitude at the door. Duggin runs the whole thing and requires everyone to listen to HIM. Loved it, and am really looking forward to my Saturday mornings..... for the rest of my life.... :)

The dancers were super professional, dressed elegantly, and really breathed life into the song that the orchestra (hired from a separate company) played. I paid a flat rate per dancer, which included the performance and 50 minutes of rehearsal time before the proposal to give the dancers a chance to rehearse with the orchestra since they had not worked together before; Urbanity Dance was worth every penny and then some! The final performance was exactly what I had envisioned, and I especially appreciated that the dancer who performed last (Joy) finished her solo with a "lyrical invitation" for my partner and I to follow her to the predetermined proposal spot - this aligned perfectly with the music as it was fading out, and allowed for perfect photography/videography coverage - plus the two of us were in such a daze as everything was happening that we definitely needed the clear guidance Joy provided. Classical Ballet Arts is a premium ballet school for students of all ages through high school…read more Diana Madden is classical ballet trained and had been a Boston Ballet teacher for many years. She is extremely kind and a brilliant teacher. The school performs a Nutcracker Ballet every December and a Spring Show every June. It is a wonderful mix of young girls dancing at an extremely high quality in shows that are so beautiful it has brought tears to my eyes. The next show will be Saturday June 9th at the Abigail Adams Middle School at 89 Middle School in Weymouth at 4pm and 6pm. Tickets are $20 and are available at the door. Applications for fall ballet classes and ballet summer camp will be available at the show.

The list of unreasonable requirements just added up over the years and worn me out: * Being reminded every week, that payment is due on the first of the month, when you personal never missed a payment. * The recital ticket distribution method leads to grown adults standing wee hours of an cold April morning for little girls and boys dance recitals ( Red sox tickets I could understand, dance recitals... just a tad bit silly). * Lessons during April vacation * The recitals are two towns(15miles) away from the studio. * Recital is a three day commitment (WThF) for Memorial Day weekend. Probably 4 days, if you wanted your 10 minute last lesson, but that was just to silly to consider. The kids were great. They tried really hard and seemed to be having fun during their classes. The instructions was uneven. Some teachers very good, some not so good. But I bet that is everywhere. The classes helpers were also great, on time and kind to the other children After looking around for more a reasonable schedule and modern attitudes toward family workloads, I found that the costumes look just as nice, the kids try just as hard( and might even smile a little more), and the dance routines are "fresher" at other studios which are just a close.
