Even a double espresso from this place is about as hot and potent as a 90 year old man

Joe & The Juice - GF Spicy Tuna Sandwich and Iced Gingerbread Latte €16

Joe and the Juice at Schipol Airport is one of my favourite spots at Schipol before a flight. It is…read morelocated in Lounge 3 of the Airport, which is walkable from Lounge 2. I ordered ahead via the app, unfortunately, I had used the balance on my gift cards during my trip so had to pay full price - It came to €16 for a coffee and a sandwich, a little expensive but I was happy to pay this for the quality and due to a lack of gluten-free alternatives elsewhere in the airport. The staff were very friendly and asked if I had an allergy before making my sandwich. I ordered the Spicy Tuna sandwich, without jalpenos. It tasted really good, unlike most GF bread it wasn't dry, and the fillings were generous and good quality, especially the tuna, pesto and fresh tomatoes. My coffee was also good, opting for an Iced Gingerbread Latte. The flavour of both the coffee and gingerbread was good and well-balanced, making it the ideal festive treat before flying back home. The interior was fine but could have been better. There was a lack of comfortable seating and the music playing was very loud and certainly would not have been appropriate for children. Not a big deal for me, but I'm sure this could have offended some. PRO TIP: Purchase a gift card via their app, it works out so much cheaper. You could buy a gift card for €38 which gets you 10 coffees, you can then use them at any Joe and the Juice in the Netherlands. An Iced Gingerbread Latte would be €6.20 without the gift card. 4* - One of the few options for gluten-free at Schipol and they're certainly not taking that for granted with good quality food, beverages and service.

Believe it or not, I was actually looking forward to a long layover at Amsterdam's Schiphol…read moreAirport. Jamie W. and I just got off our redeye flight from San Francisco, and I just appreciate a terminal that goes on forever since the airport consists of one long terminal. We had four hours to kill, so we took our time finding a morning meal to tie us over to the next in-flight snack box. This marketplace set-up was just the ideal find for us up on the mezzanine level because we were committed to eating healthy on our vacation even with paella and grilled octopus waiting for us in Barcelona. We were there pretty early because the fresh fruit juices were still laid out on the ice (photo: http://bit.ly/2DBDSHY). Most of the grilled vegetables still had not found their way to the display platters (photo: http://bit.ly/2G3GwoD). I decided to wait for the staff to get the plates ready rather than weaken and get a big bowl of Asian noodles at the next station. For 6.95€, I was able to get a pretty hefty plate of grilled zucchini and eggplant, roasted red peppers, and black olives (photo: http://bit.ly/2DlAsWv). It was on the lukewarm side but frankly hit the spot when we were at our least demanding. There was quite a food court up there, so seating was fairly packed with fellow passengers speaking in a multitude of languages (photo: http://bit.ly/2mZ2ccN). Now it was time to catch a few winks before our Barcelona adventure. FOOD - 3 stars...a grilled vegetable plate was fine by me after a long flight AMBIANCE - 3 stars...part of a very busy food court SERVICE - 3 stars...really not that much to it TOTAL - 3 stars...a good food early in the morning

The fruits and veggies were fresh and everything is presented nicely. The only things I could say they could improve would be the cleanliness of the tables and the temperature in the restaurant. It was quite cold when we visited. Otherwise a very nice choice when flying into or out of Schiphol.

I love bread... I…read morelove it to the point that I want to take a massive lovesak sized loaf, create an opening through the crispy yet delicate crust, and have my body be engulfed in warm spongy bread innards as I lay in fetal position sucking my thumb. However, my love for bread has cursed me until the end of time. The magic of yeast has turned my tongue into an overly critical bread monster lusting for loaves of baked dough delight. In my never ending quest for this age old staple, I decided to venture into a small Dutch village known as Hoofddorp to see if my carb cravings could be satisfied. My first stop is a little bakkerij called Gorthuis. I walked in during lunchtime and there was already a queue to the door! Good sign. There is nowhere to sit but you are definitely surrounded by temptation during your queue wait! Unfortunately, all the homemade cakes and marzipan evil resides next to the entrance forcing you to involuntarily drool. Rude! During my wait, I decided to take a box of tea cookies and help fatten the employees in my office. What are tea cookies you ask? Balls of marzipan with a crispy syrup crust around them. A more appropriate name should be sugar-bomb-of-yummy-death-"cookie". I digress. I decided to test this place by getting an old cheese sandwich with brown bread, a loaf of muesli-bread and homemade and supergezonde gevulde speculaas Sandwich: boring... as in limp bread that I could have gotten better at Albert Heijn... Muesli-bread: If there is something Dutch can do, it's stuff dough with kilos of berrys and nuts to the point where you aren't sure if you are eating bread or if someone punch your mouth with a fistful of raisins. This bread was definitely the highlight and I say the more fruity nuts, THE BETTER! Thumbs up here! Gevulde Speculaas - I mean... I'm not sure how you can go wrong with butter-marzipan squished between two gingerbread cookies. It's like a Dutch Christmas Oreo cookie gone horribly wrong in a good way! All in all, super nice service (non native Dutchies will need to practice your Dutch skills here), but nothing truly stands out as amAAAzing. My loafy lust was not satisfied here leaving my rising yeast addicted body hungry for more carbs. Three stars for a cute place, decent bread and nice peeps. Stay tuned for the next installment on my Hoofddorp bakkerij quest for the best!
