Dallas FRESH IS SOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER! On La Porte next to Pizza Hut! This place here has worse service ever. The younger woman is horrible. Her attitude and the way she treats customers. They finally hired someone who has good customer service skills but the shitty service remains cause of that other younger woman who speaks perfect English. The owner of the store has a nasty attitude as well, when I originally went to compliment how awesome the store was and the tacos. In reality the tacos are tasteless. The verde and rojo make it a little better but so not worth it. Try Dallas fresh for literally $1 per taco. Authentic steer tacos! read more

To call this restaurant sketchy would be an insult to sketchy restaurants. Seriously. This place is one huge health code violation. When we first walked in, half of the restaurant was in the dark. At first we thought it was simply mood lighting, then we realized that it was because via fluorescent lights at the front of the restaurant we're all out and nobody replace them. You could tell because there were no covers over the lights. They were literally just office lights hanging down from the ceiling. That's cool. It is a small restaurant. Maybe the night gets better. Wrong. The table was dirty. The seats were dirty. There was one waitress who did not seem to want to be a waitress. While they advertise Coke on their sign, they had none whatsoever and nothing diet. Which is a challenge when you are looking for a sugar free alternative. The food was just OK. The table next to us was not so lucky as to have food that was just OK. The Brito I had was the definition of no-frills. It was served with no sides. Had nothing on top of it and no garnish. Literally just a plain burrito on a plate.I overheard them complaining to the waitress about how horrible their food was, yet they received no sympathy or discount for it. To top it all off, the single bathroom they had was inoperable. Upon opening the door you were greeted with a toilet which looked to have not been cleaned or flushed for the last week. Seriously. Absolutely the best tacos in Waterloo. Every chance I get to bring someone in from out of town out to eat I take them here. The food is amazing but the sitting area is in the middle of a grocery store so not the most luxurious seating area. I am really, really amazed by the tastiness and authenticity of all their items. Their tacos, burritos are the absolute bomb! Definitely go for the heavier items like carne asada and carnitas. And try the pozole too, it's done home-style and in the proper way for a fulfilling, savory stew with complicated and nuanced Mexican flavors. For a place in the middle of Iowa, their selection of chicharron, chorizo, and other menu items, as well as their aisles of imported Mexican goods are astonishing. We were really looking forward to eating here. We had passed by and saw that next door was a Mexican grocery and decided that this would be the real deal. Little hole in the wall places interest us. Walked in and was very unsure if we were to seat ourselves or go up to the counter and order. So we went to the counter and rang the bell. The employee came out and told us we could sit anywhere we like. Not too many places to chose from and the one we picked hadn't been wiped down. Luckily there were paper towels at the table so the hubby wiped it off. Menu wouldn't be much help to a non-Spanish speaker. No description of what came with the item or what the item was. Several things on the menu that I had no idea what they were and we eat Mexican a lot. My husband loves tamales. He is always hesitant to order them because he has a friend that brings him some from Gramma's house every time they make some and too often the ones in a restaurant don't stack up. So he ordered the special that came with 4 tamales. Whoops, only brought out three. He asked and they brought out the other. Huge disappointment. Very mealy and tasted like they had been frozen and then microwaved. He did enjoy his tripe and tongue tacos. He did mention that his beans and rice were both very cool. I had the Diablo shrimp. It lived up to it's name and was very spicy and flavorful. The shrimp was good and plentiful. Most of the time there was only one or two other tables in the restaurant. Not busy for a Thursday night with storms. It would have been great if she would have come over to check on us because I could have really used a second beer. Needed to quench the fire. Perhaps the tacos are their specialty? Maybe an off night? Whatever the issue, I probably will try other places around the area before going back. read more

This place is a hidden gem. The food is the most authentic Mexican I've eaten around here. So fresh and delicious! Don't let the more eccentric items on the menu scare you, there are plenty of options to choose from. We got an appetizer, lunch and drinks for two for under $20, and service was fast.
