This place saved us on our last visit to DC. We got into the city for a quick tour that night and wanted to go get a bite afterwards. The " Fight Club" joint a few doors down were no longer serving food at 9 o'clock even though they advertised that they were open till one. Staff there were a joke. Then we walked a few doors down and found this welcoming place who were more than willing to satisfy our hunger. Food was outstanding and the staff were more than accommodating. I look forward to going back for a longer sit down meal. read more

We ordered $250 worth of food for our family of 8 which we picked up the minute the restaurant told us was ready. We live 5 blocks away and drove there. The food was cold, old and guacamole covered in a brown film and look repulsive even after stirring it up. It looked like was sitting around all day and no one had the presence of mind to cover it or give us fresh food. Even the cheese quesadillas were bad and none of our kids would eat anything other than the chips (which to the adults were stale). This was a very below average, boring, tasteless dinner. We will NEVER go there again and wish La Loma never went out of business!!! read more

Friendly people serving flavorless food. Margaritas are really the only draw to this place, but even they don't make up for lack of taste to pricey dishes. Ordered a quesadilla and a beef taco. Didn't know that I had to specify "ground" I was given 3 roast beef tacos. Wasn't even aware that that was a way that a taco was served, and it should be. My visits have been less and less frequent. I had lunch here by myself and I had the restaurant completely to myself. The service was awesome and the food was subpar. I ordered cheese with chorizo and it was not what I expected. The chorizo wasn't cut up into smaller pieces but it was chunks of chorizo. I was thinking it would be cheese with bits of chorizo but it turned out to be chorizo with cheese on it. It was different, not bad but it wasn't what I wanted. I also ordered the lomo saltado, a favorite dish of mine. Again, the food was ok. The steak was cut into bigger pieces and it was just okay. The reason I'm giving this place a 3 is because I had leftovers and I had no desire to eat it. And I love leftovers. I probably won't come back again even though I hear margaritas are awesome. read more

Disclaimer: Haven't eaten here. I had an unfortunate experience with one of their male staff members who behaved inappropriately while sitting right outside the restaurant around noon. As I was walking past La Plaza to the UPS store, he stared at me. I looked straight at him several times to check. And when walking back from the store to my car, he creepily stared at my body again for 15 seconds again. I made eye contact, he kept staring, and I then asked point blank if I could help him. He replied "no, why?" And I responded with "Well you've been staring at my body, so I figured I'd ask". I needed him to know that while he can act in any way that pleases him, I'll make the experience just as uncomfortable for him too. He then proceeded to call me crazy and say that he was FaceTiming with someone (which is rude to the individual he was FaceTiming with, given he couldn't possible be paying attention to them while staring). I walked away, then after realizing he probably feels no qualms about doing this to someone else, I turned back and walked into the restaurant to ask if he worked there. And when I walked out with the employee who confirmed that, he doubled down on saying I was crazy and that he was married (as if that would absolve him or make it impossible for him to behave inappropriately). A simple "ok, won't happen again" would have deescalated this entire situation. But no, I was told I was "crazy" and to "get out of here." I hope management at La Plaza initiates a dialogue with their male staff on how to be respectful and appropriate with random women walking past their restaurant. These occurrences happen too often to women who are just going about their daily lives. It's degrading and humiliating. And I don't expect to have to deal with these experiences in my own neighborhood. read more

I can not say enough wonderful things about this restaurant!!! I absolutely love it. My friends and I go there all the time. It has amazing margs, wonderful servers, and great food. The servers are always the same so we have gotten to know them very well. They treat us like royalty! They bring endless chips and often throw in a free tequila shot for dessert. The queso dip, fajitas, and quesadillas are to die for! Pitchers of margaritas are the way to go and you definitely get a good deal for what you pay. Often times the owners kids will be there too and it is nice seeing the same people and their families enjoying the business they have built together. All of the servers are friends and it really makes for an enjoyable atmosphere. Not too long ago they had a party to celebrate 31 years at that location and they hired a mariachi band and gave everyone free patron airplane shots. I can't reiterate enough how much I love this spot! read more

It's been months, perhaps years, since the last time I was at Laplaza. The first time being a sidekick on the SotB tour with MKS and Laura V. This time, as a suggestion for pre-bocce bevvies and grub to celebrate Katie being done with her master's program. And now I remember why this joint was a winner, and why I've always had fond memories of it. Helllooooo deliciously tart strong margaritas! It's snazzy when a half pitcher of the stuff is enough to get at least two out of three people buzzy. And I'm pretty certain I'm still full from the gonzo combination platter (per my wont) of rice, beans, chile relleno, chicken enchilada, and fixin's. Yeah, I'm a glutton. So? All told, for around $20 including tax and tip, not so bad considering the excessive amount of food (which, by the way, I destroyed) and effectively two glasses of liquoriffic margarita magic. I blame the tequila for why we got owned at bocce. I'm just sayin'. read more

I think we scared the staff. My husband says they were watching us from the kitchen. Well, what can I say -- we were having a good time! LaPlaza was stop number 6 on The South of the Border Queso (or Guacamole) Comparison, Culinary Discovery Tour and Gastronomic Extravaganza being undertaken by myself and the lovely Laura V. We brought some assistants with us tonight -- my aforementioned husband, Martin, as well as Kevin L. and Brian H. We had some disagreement on the salsa -- Laura loved it, I just thought it was adequate. We agreed on the margaritas -- the taste was totally average, but there was definitely some tequila in those babies..... Several of our party ordered the paella special, and that was going to take a while, so we also ordered two appetizers: The fried onion rings with a special hot sauce, and the queso. Those onion rings were.... how shall I say ..... doesn't Ore-Ida make frozen onion rings? They were like that. The "special" sauce was special all right -- they should have left that stuff on the short bus. The queso was yummy though -- that melted fake cheese stuff with roasted tomatoes and jalapenos. Smokin'! Much tequila was ingested during the appetizer tasting period. Entrees finally arrived at long last. Laura and I both had some beautiful plates of food. This is the point at which we started to scare the staff. First, the paella orders were kind of messed up -- they brought us two individual servings and one serving for two, which adds up to four servings, but only three of us had ordered it....... a "discussion" ensued, but the waiter nipped it in the bud by saying "The chef made a mistake". All was well. Then I insisted that Martin take photos of Laura's plate with his phone cam. I think that was the part that really freaked them out. :-) The things Yelp makes me do! Laura had seafood enchiladas, which she said were excellent. I had the pork tacos -- tasty bits of pork on corn tortillas, with lettuce, tomato, pico de gallo, guacamole, and sour cream, and sides of rice and refried beans. No gloppy sauce on this dish! I really enjoyed the pork. The rice was bright orange -- I don't know if they really used that much saffron, or added some food coloring, but it was very tasty rice. Beans -- a bit burnt. Oh well. Our three associates with the paella seemed to be quite happy. I tasted a scallop from Martin's bowl, and it was *perfect* -- I love scallops. Some of us were still drinking at this point. Did I mention that we were getting louder and louder? Perhaps this had something to do with the folks watching us from the kitchen door. Anyway, we had a grand old time, and some pretty darn good food. There were a few things I wouldn't order a second time, but I would happily eat here again. In fact, I'm going to have to eat here again, so that I can compare their beef fajitas with all the other places we've been. read more

The food was amazing! We are in DC visiting from Southern California, where there is authentic Mexican food every other block. The food I ate tonight was equal to or better than the best Mexican food I've had at home. The steak in my quesadilla was so tender it could have come from Morton's or Ruth's Chris! The steak was not just melt in your mouth tender, it was deliciously marinated. I would definitely recommend La Plaza to anyone looking for delicious, authentic Mexican food. Additional bonus, the price was reasonable and the margaritas were tasty and strong. And to top it all off they served unlimited complimentary homemade chips and salsa. My only regret was I didn't save room to try a dessert here. The service was excellent as well. We'll definitely be back the next time we are in town. read more

To me, this is the best Tex-Mex in Washington. I lived in Houston, Texas, for 5+ years, and I've sampled a lot of good, cheap Tex-Mex. The place has El Salvadoran food, but the traditional Tex-Mex options are WONDERFUL. Plus, Henry's the nicest owner/manager: he walks around the restaurant, personally checking on his guests. Price is reasonable, margs are strong, and it's usually not too crowded. I highly recommend. read more

As Mexican restaurants go, this one has a surprisingly decent vegetarian selection, called out as such on the menu. Of course, the various options boil down to a bunch of different bean and cheese delivery systems, but seeing as how I like those things, I gave it a shot. A bean burrito and cheese enchilada were both quite tasty (acutely anyway; that cilantro aftertaste was definitely present for a while). Seeing as how both came with pinto beans on the side, it would have been better to get black rather than pinto beans when given the choice of filling for some variety. The overall amount of food wasn't huge for the money, but given the neighborhood and proximity to the Metro I wasn't terribly surprised. Takeout was ready in about 20 minutes, not bad seeing as how they were well attended at the time. It's dimly lit, and a checkerboard tablecloth kind of place, but if you want something in this neighborhood that isn't loud and trendy, it might be worth a shot. read more

The best Mexican I've had on Capitol Hill so far! I had the Chicken chimichanga, and it was amazing! The chips were good, and the salsa was just okay. I would definitely come here again though! Only downside was that during the bill splitting process they charged me the entire amount of everyone's meal while my two friends got their properly split bills. My wife ordered takeout from La Plaza, and everything that did go wrong did go wrong. 1) The order was scheduled for 515pm, but they didn't put the order in until I arrived. It took about 20 minutes before I got my food. 2) The restaurant would have let me leave without everything my wife ordered. It wasn't until I asked the host for an item did he realize he was forgetting something we paid for. 3) NOT A SINGLE EMPLOYEE WAS WEARING A FACE MASK OR GLOVES. The host has his mask around his chin. Same with the bartender. The two employees I saw preparing the food didn't have anything covering their face or hands. 4) For some reason, there were people eating a meal at the bar. Obviously no masks. It's too bad I can't write anything about the taste of the food. read more

Worst Mexican food I've ever had. The combination plate was a glob of organic matter covered in melted cheese. It was impossible to tell where the tamale ended and the enchilada started, especially since they were dry and tasteless. The retried beans seemed old, and they left a weird aftertaste. The rice was as tasteless as everything else. And the fish tacos? Also tasteless. I don't know how it's possible to make Mexican food this badly. Just down the street, you can get Mexican and Salvadoran food at Tortilla Cafe that's terrific, at half the price. read more

This place has really good food. The tacos placeros (beef) were awesome! I also got chips and salsa and ate like a pig because the salsa was simply delicious. My was raving about the burrito he got. We had it delivered because of the whole COVID situation, so we did not get to go inside the restaurant, but I believe people can eat there safely because of outdoor tables (I walked outside of the restaurant on Pennsylvania ave). Being that Mexican is one of my favorites, I can be somewhat hard to please. This place only had 3.5 stars so I really didn't expect much but figured it couldn't be that bad, boy was I wrong. I ordered the chicken enchilada and chicken tamale combo which are pretty standard fare and hard to mess up. Should've known something was up when I couldn't tell the tamale and enchilada apart at first glance. Every bite I took from there was worse than the one before. Each item on my plate lacked any type of distinguishable taste, even the beans and rice. Seriously, how do you have rice and beans that don't taste like anything? I didn't even get a fourth of the way through before I announced that I couldn't tolerate the food anymore and had to push it away because it was making me nauseous. You know it's bad when I write a review within 30 minutes of eating. I've definitely had some bad Mexican food before but this by far was one of the worst! read more

I was very disappointed in this restaurant. I paid about $14 for a taco salad from Uber Eats. There were only about five pieces of chicken on it, and barley any guacamole. The chicken didn't taste fresh. I had heard good things about this place so I was shocked. I'm going to chalk it up and say maybe I caught them on an off day. We've ordered twice from here on ubereats and both times it was great! Food is always prepared quickly and arrives ahead of estimate. To go containers keep rice and beans separate from other items on plate. The chicken is super moist and flavorful. Enchiladas, hard shell tacos, nachos and quesadilla are all good. Everything comes with guac, pico, lettuce and sour cream. This is definitely "American Mexican" food. So if you're looking for authentic taqueria - try somewhere else. I think this will be our regular take out Mexican! Will have to stop by sometime for margs! read more

I went here awhile ago with my boyfriend when they offered a Groupon deal ($25 for $50 worth). We ordered El Ayudante and Margaritas. Before our meal was served, they gave us chips and salsa. The salsa was really good and flavorful! Our meal included steak, grilled chicken, shrimp, spare ribs and salmon. We got black beans and rice for sides. The food they served were delicious and cooked well. The margarita was good as well! I loved the service because the waiter was very attentive and friendly. Then again, it was just us 2 and another lady in the restaurant at the time (2:30 pm, I believe. They close at 3 and reopen at 5) However, I took off a star since the place looks outdated. I was also a little disappointed with the portion size since the regular price for what we got was $40.95. Thank goodness we had Groupon because I don't think we'll order it for that much. At least we left there satisfied enough. I'll be back to try the others! read more

I wouldn't mind returning here. Super good food and the drinks are a little on the strong side which is GREAT! Kind of unassuming looking from the outside. My friend and I just happened to catch it across the street as we were going into the nearby post office to apply for passports. She thought pupusas and a drink would be good after a relatively stressful day we'd had already (by 2pm it felt like we both had a really long day already) when we were finished with the passport stuff. If you get 'Carlos M.' as a server he's awesome. Friendly and really attentive (but not overly so that you can't enjoy your meal). We were quickly served warm chips & with some chilled salsa as he went to get out menus. He then returned with them and asked if we wanted anything else to drink as he gave us glasses of ice water and we both got strawberry margaritas which were perfection! At first we both were gonna get one 2 pupusas each have our drink and go but viewing the menu further we decided on each getting the 'El Cuscatleco'. The El Cuscatleco platter had refried beans, yellow rice w/ peas & carrots, cheese & bean pupusa, shredded chicken & cheese tamale (there were a few other things in it too), fried yucca, sweet plantains, sour cream and some veggies whose name I can't remember covered by some sauce whose name I can't remember lol). When we got close to finished our food Carlos randomly came over and handed my friend and I complimentary tequila shots. We were so surprised ... pleasantly so. I don't know if he does that often but it was a great touch. We were sooooo stuffed by the time we were done. You get kind of a lot of food with the El Cuscatleco platter ($12.95 currently). 2 El Cuscatleco platters, 2 strawberry margaritas with taxes came to roughly $46. We also left Mr. Carlos with a $20 tip. Only 2 cons are: 1.) tamale was not wrapped in a banana leaf and the tamale which was hot along with the rest of the food when it came out lost it's heat kind of fast. I probably should've eaten that first....it was just okay when I got to it. 2.) the salsa that accompanied the chips was a little bit on the bland side...yet I didn't completely hate it.
